Here is a 2006 Honeywell fan I just got! It's an older model from Honeywell's air circulator lineup, going as early as in the late 90s... and it's a little beast! Blows a lot more than my newer 2013 model Honeywell. These were certainly built better than the newer ones. In this video I disassemble, clean and oil the fan. Feel free to use the video as a tutorial if you are looking to take apart your Honeywell fan!

Some common questions & answers: Q: What oil did you use? What are the alternatives? Can I use WD-40? A: In this video I used 3-in-1 electric motor oil. This oil is sold in blue and white bottles, and is formulated specifically for electric motors. This is not the same as the black and white bottle 3-in-1, that one is a general purpose household oil and contains detergents that can collect debris and gum up, resulting in a seized fan motor. Other good options are ZoomSpout turbine oil or any non-detergent, mineral or synthetic oil. Amazon links: 3-in-1 electric motor oil CA - amzn.to/3bt8gHc US - amzn.to/3bnZoCF ZoomSpout oil (alternative oil option) CA - amzn.to/3ONHh7B US - amzn.to/3yr17A7 As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Don’t use WD-40! It’s not a proper lubricant and will do no good to the motor on the long run. I don’t recommend any aerosol-can lubricants, or grease. These fans have sleeve bearings and they were designed for oil. Grease is too viscous and can put unnecessary load on the motor. If still in doubt, feel free to ask me down below in the comments! Here is another tutorial I created, where I go over the oiling process of these small motors in greater detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpWzqaKNf5aJjM0 Q: Is cleaning the HT-800 the same as the HT-900? A: Regarding the disassembly, cleaning and oiling, they are both similar in design so the HT-900 shouldn’t be much different than the HT-800 in this video. If your fan has a motor that looks different than the one in this video, you might have a version with a PSC motor. Check out this servicing video for the PSC motor model: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJPXnqZ4f7GheaM Q: There are tamper resistant screws! A: Those screws are generally Torx screws, they are six-sided and star shaped. They require a Torx screwdriver, which can be bought from most hardware stores. If you have extra screws, I suggest replacing the Torx screws with standard Phillips-head screws when reassembling the fan. Q: What about the metal retaining washer holding the blades? A: The washer is not a necessity in holding the blades in place. It’s also conveniently serves as a method of planned obsolescence by the manufacturer to stop people from being able to properly maintain the fan and increase its longevity. The forward force created while the fan is running will keep the blades pushed onto the motor. Check when you put the blade back on the motor that it’s snug when fitting onto the motor shaft. You should be able to shake the fan without the blades falling off. If they do fall off, then you may need to find a way to secure it. If you were able to remove the washer undamaged, put it back on, if not, you can add a dab of hot glue to the blade hub to secure it. These are called “push nuts”, and can also be purchased at most hardware stores if you need a replacement. Q: My fan is still running slow or making odd noises. A: Make sure you align the bearings by tapping the motor shaft with a screwdriver. Do this a few times and spin the shaft to see if it turns freely. Or the bearings may need to be cleaned. Sometimes the old oil can become gummy and slow the motor down. In this case, take a piece of paper towel, roll it up into a little rod, and slide it into the bearings and clean them by twisting the paper towels in and out. After that make sure you add new oil as I did in this video. For more information and details on how to oil small fan motors, check out the linked video below. Hope this video helped those are trying to service these fans! Feel free to comment down below for additional questions and I’d be glad to answer them!

@TheSuperFanMan For the Oiling am I allowed to use a WD-40 for the fan as you did shown when you were oiling the fan for the model HT-900's?
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 5 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend WD-40 because it's not a machine lubricant, and will harm the bearings if used on fans. I recommend 3-in-1 electric motor oil, or ZoomSpout. Those are made for bearings.

TheSuperFanMan I have a fan like this. It’s 3 months old. Next to my bed. And it’s turning my sheets black. I completely cleaned it. But it’s still turning it black. What do I do?
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm I've never heard of that issue before. It could be that some part of the fan is releasing black plastic particles that's turning your sheets black. the I'm not sure if there is a fix for that problem. Also I imagine it wouldn't be too healthy if the particles were inhaled through breathing. It would be a good idea to look for a different fan.

Just some tips for anyone else who might be trying this. I couldn't find a screwdriver that fit in the holes in the grill so I had to come up with an alternate solution. I had a few syringes lying around that I use for measuring and dispensing glues and vape juice. I found that if I used a 1ml syringe with a 1 1/2 inch long 14 gauge luer lock blunt needle on it, it was just skinny enough to go through the holes in the grill and long enough to get the oil right into the front bearings, both sides. With a little fiddling I think I was also able to angle it behind the back bearings as well. It felt like I was able to get it into the felt area, but I couldn't see to confirm. A longer needle definitely would make it even easier. I've seen them as long as 3 inches on Amazon I think. I used sewing machine oil, which I have found to be great for things like this. You don't need much, but the difference was night and day. The fan started up at full speed as soon as I turned it on. It had previously struggled to start at all, now its blowing like brand new again.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 15 күн бұрын
Appreciate your input! Some people do need to take the fan apart for cleaning, but just for oiling, that's a great solution. Saves time too! If you do need to take the fan apart, a dedicated phillips or torx screwdriver (not those interchangeable-bit drivers, as they tend to be too wide) is pretty cheap.

Thank you for this very helpful video. I've had a now-discontinued Vornado fan for about 10 years, similar to the current 530 but with a clip rather than a base. It was great, running continuously every summer from June to September, but in recent years has started to squeal like a stuck pig. I didn't want to give up the strong, versatile clip even for a good Honeywell HT-900 as I have in my office. On the recommendation of a know-it-all friend, I removed the grill and the blades, then dripped turbine oil around the shaft while the motor was running. That would help for a few days but I got tired of doing it over and over. Finally came looking for real help on KZbin. That Vornado has the same type of square motor as this fan, so I used your instructions here to disassemble it and put several drops of turbine oil on each bearing. Only difference was the screws holding the bearings together were on the back side. After oiling and aligning the bearings, the fan is back to whisper-quiet and takes about 5-6 seconds to spin down.

Please be cautious about washing the entire fan with water.. the electrical components should not be exposed to water. Any water that seeps deep into the motor, bearings and switch will stay there for a long time, which can cause catastrophic failure and damage. Rusting can also be a problem. Ideally, all of the electrical parts such as the motor, wires and switch should be removed from the plastic housing before rinsing. If this isn’t ideal, then you could take some plastic food wrap and complete wrap and seal the motor and switch before spraying water on the fan. Of course, don’t submerge the entire fan in a bath of water. Hope it helps, just something to keep in mind for next time :)
@brooklynwetshaver7476
@brooklynwetshaver7476 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSuperFanMan I would never submerge it, no. I used to clean it the way you demonstrated and someone told me to hit it with a spray hose and I thought they were nuts. You think electronics/water, NO! They said motors can get wet to a degree, so I tried and have been doing it for years now with no issues. Thank you.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 жыл бұрын
Anytime! I’m not sure how familiar that individual was with electric motors, but the type of motors in household fans should not get wet at all. Certain industrial motors that are sealed and damp-rated can get wet, but most household fan motors should not. Water can cause rust, short circuit, and will wash away the oil in the bearings, possibly leading to electrical and mechanical failure. Glad to hear your fan is doing good, but I’d suggest at least covering up the motor before washing next time. Also adding a couple drops of electric motor oil will help a lot! :)

Thank you! You can check out my pinned Q&A comment for the full answer. The little retainer washer is actually not important. As long as the blades fit snug onto the motor shaft, there’s no reason to put the washer back on. Honeywell installs the washer also to make it difficult for people to service their fans. Check to make sure the blades stay put even when you shake the fan. If it does, you shouldn’t have any issue even if you don’t replace the washer.

My fan had actually stopped working. When the power was on it just hummed but the blades would not move. After cleaning it and oiling it the fan works better than from the factory. I ran out of gun oil which I use on all my stuff but avocado oil worked just fine.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 10 ай бұрын
Great to hear that! The avocado oil may become gummy over time, so I’d suggest keeping an eye on the fan in case it happens.
@fyrehawkSix
@fyrehawkSix 10 ай бұрын
@@TheSuperFanMan You are correct. I used the avocado oil as a solvent to clean the built up gunk on the shaft and washers that had accumulated due to the factory oil used. a few drops of avocado oil on a lint free towel does wonders to remove old gunkiness. I expect to have to clean it again because any oil will eventually become gummy and build up gunk. And I definitely did not pour the oil into the electric motor.

Nice vid I knew about everything you did except how to get the fan blade off. Didn't know you had to brake the ring in the middle. My xbox one's power block had similar problems. It wasn't running well I had to take it apart clean the fan and oil it up. It worked like knew after that.

For the ring holding the blades I just left it on there -- you can get a screwdriver in between the blades and remove the screws holding the motor to the housing and the ones holding the bearings together. It was a little awkward putting it back together, but not too bad. One thing I think I should mention: there were lock-washers in between the rear bearing and the nut that goes into the rear bearing hole. Thanks for the vid -- you helped me!
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 3 жыл бұрын
No problem! I believe there were a few different variations of these motors, some had hex nuts on the rear bearing, some had threads bored into the bearing housing itself, like on my fan. I think my fan has little split washers between the screw head and the front bearing. But thank you for the noting it; I’m sure folks reading your comment would find it helpful!
@JohnSmithZen
@JohnSmithZen 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSuperFanMan Wow... Maybe my fan was put together wrong, or worked on by someone before me, but doesn't that make a lot more sense -- the nuts can not turn at all, but the screw's head can. I'm wondering if I should move the split washers to under the heads.
@JohnSmithZen

I wish he would've mentioned about the two tiny nuts that are attached to the screws that he removed at 1:37. I didn't realize these were there until one fell out of the fan while trying to fix it. then I could not find the other one until, OF COURSE, once I had the whole thing put back together again. Would've been nice to know this ahead of time.

The bushing retainers look like they were originally designed to house sealed ball bearings(maybe of the skateboard variety). I'm thinking it might be fun to get another fan and a couple of those ball bearings and a kill-a-watt device and see how much better it is with them instead of just the bushings.

'Without further adieu' is an eggcorn, which is a misheard phrase, saying, lyric or slogan that retains the original meaning. Adieu is a French word that means goodbye. You’re welcome! The retainer ring does serve a purpose; it holds the blades firmly onto the motor shaft. However I’ve found that it’s not necessary to reinstall it if the blades alone are sufficiently snug on the motor shaft, which was the case with this fan. It makes cleaning in the future easier. But I’d suggest checking your fan to see if the blades will stay on the shaft by themselves (a good test is to put the blades on, tilt the fan face down, and hit the back of the fan. If the blades fall out, you should put the retainer ring back on). Hope it helps!
