Disassembling a BMW iDrive Controller for Cleaning

A friend brought me one by to clean up for him. And I nearly broke the ribbon cable as you did but luckily saw where to disconnect it. Having worked on a BMW -made Mini Cooper for a year, I gotta say.........BMW stuff is a major PITA to work on. It just is. All of it. Very cleverly engineered, just don't ever let up maintenance, and good luck if you are a weekend mechanic-type.

mine is acting weird! when I turn it left, everything's fine, but when i turn the circle in right, then it wont move 90% of the time.. maybe it's about tightness of that center bolt you were mentioning; did you have that kind of problem and do you know what's the solution? thanks for a very helpful video, everything's much clearer now and I didn't know it has so much pieces :o

Hey. Not really, the turning is a small mall that is under the bolt, I wouldn’t mess with it if it’s working.

Hi how do I purchase used idrive knob for BMW x1 2010

I can switch up down the knob but no reaction on screen iDrive. I can't enter functions and reset screen change station. It works left right well, BMW X1 E84 before lift , help me please , how to repair it?

Unfortunately can’t say much, the problem is pretty unique, and it always something, I only can say that is easy to replace the entire unit, and they pretty cheap, $60-80 on ebay…

In this type of i-Drive it means that it most likely dead. If you somehow pull on the knob, or slam it, you can take the wheel apart and see if the riven cable still connected, but I would suggest you to look for used unit, eBay would be the best bet!

you can’t buy parts separately. Only unit in full.

if the ratchet mechanism broken, it would be easier to buy the new one. If the up-down-left-right isn't working then it's possible to fix it, the central pole usually pops out. you can remove round cover as i did, the one I scratched badly very at the start of the video, make sure the tiny screw is there and it's screwed in, it shouldn't be tyte. after all it's easier to buy the new unit, then trying to repair old one...

when i push it down; it pushes down but nothing happens on the screen; it moves up and down and all of the small buttons work; hope is not a wire issue or the control module; buying replacement from ebay; hope it solve the issues

Hi my button the knob cannot press down :(

describe it. Does it moves up and down while you push and pull? everything that is under the joystick cap is responsible for the press. remove the cap that is on the joystick, the one that I removed with the pick tool. and release tension from the tiny screw in the middle. Make sure not to pull the joystick while the screw is removed. the structure is pretty complex.
