Disassembling JBL Charge

In this video you can see how to take the JBL Charge apart. Doing so allows you for example to replace the battery in case the original one cannot be charged anymore.
The JBL Charge is assembled with only a couple of screws and a lot of glue.
Taking it apart should not take more than 10 to 15 minutes.
All you need are two differently sized phillips screwdrivers and something to pry the two halfs apart. I was using a kitchen knife to do so.
Pay special attention when handling the battery. Do not puncture it under any condition!

the 'pull-apart' step at about 3:15, thanks to this video knowing it's not clipped or screwed together but GLUED together- I found it kind of easy (and less dangerous) to carefully use needle-nose pliers gripping the screw pilot hole on the battery side ('on the power button end'), pulling apart, getting a bite and carefully prying from there. Thanks for posting this video! Also- there seems to be a connector in the very corner of the board that comes apart when you pull apart the shells at this step- so if you don't need to totally separate the shells maybe don't. Good instructions, worked well. Thanks man, the screw below the battery is a bummer. Now I have to replace the USB port, hope I can desolder it. Need a new one first, there are different fixation types.

As a side note, when screwing the screws back it, it is really easy to over-tighten them! The plastic seems to be quite soft. So make sure not to use a whole lot of force.

the glued part comes off easy if you heat it a bit . I used 150C heat gun to warm it up

The speaker should appear on the Bluetooth settings menu as soon as you press the pairing button the speaker. The LED on the speaker should start blinking in blue and red.

I need to replace my micro USB port, too, since it stopped taking a charge. Do you know how I could upgrade it to something that would take the water/ice/slush mix? Do I need the data pins connected for it to take a charge? I use mine in my bike water bottle holder and it died far too young. I was thinking of even putting a small cable sticking out of it. Anything as long as its waterproof this go around. I bought a photive hydra in the meantime which is extremely well made (IP65) unit & better for water but nowhere near the bass of the JBL unit. Doesn't fit very well in the water bottle holder either.

+John Possum Hi, I was looking for a waterproof solution just like you and ended up with the JBL Clip2. But that one also does not quite have the bass. The Charge3 is now waterproof but I don't want to spend the money right now. As for the USB port, you should only have to connect the power ports for it to charge up the battery. I'm also wondering if it might've something else wrong since there may be a lot of impact on it (depending on where you're riding). Maybe a solder joint got loose. Good luck with the repair. It would be interesting to hear back once you fixed it.

I need to repair a usb power socket on a pulse speaker, can you do thos repair?

+Ed Hernandez As far as I know the Pulse speaker is pretty difficult to disassemble. There is a lot of glue involved in the assembly process. It might be possible to get to the USB socket without completely destroying the speaker, but I am not sure.

+Yo Ceroolll I'm most often wiping it off with a microfiber towel. That gets rid of most of the dirt and dust. If there's dust in the speaker, I'd carefully try a vacuum.

You would have to remove the daughter board and then unsolder the bad USB port from it.

Nice tear down, but this is somewhat dangerous. Managed to ruin mine trying to replace the bat. No obvious damage but the sound is dead. They glue the snot out of speakers so they don’t rattle. Hard glue was connecting the PA of the circuit board to the back cover. Prying the cover off probably damaged one of the components.
