About time someone just posts a timelapse of taking the motor apart! Great job dude. It would've been a little better if you added some comments at the end, but still one of the best disassembly vids out here.

Saludos y gracias.

For everyone using cast iron exhaust manifolds & I would say headers as well, tip. Elongate both end flange holes and use a flat washer. The 2:1 expansion and contraction difference from iron/steel to aluminum will often break end bolt or stud. You see this a lot on the donor engines. This just helps reduce the future chance of that headache. Seen both, Dealer Tech. ASE Master Tech-Retired
@joedanero53604 жыл бұрын
Do you mean open up the outer manifold holes and use washers?
@deankay44344 жыл бұрын
Joe danero Yes! The outer ends of the exhaust manifold(s) studs or bolts have to move as the aluminum heads moves. This is why they like the torque to yield head bolts as these help maintain clamping force. Something has to give. Rather than loose a head gasket, the end bolt breaks. I had 4 cylinder engines that the rear stud broke all of the time. So I would have to drill or if lucky, unscrew the stud if stick out. Rat tail files are hard but brittle, so I had several short ones. I found it quick to chuck in a drill and oblong the hole. Using a flat washer under the head of the bolt/stud, simply allowed the stud to slide on the exhaust manifold. By doing this, it never failed again. Unless you see the “LS” family engine everyday, look at these bolts the next time you walk thru the salvage yard. It seems that 9 of 10 engines had bolts broken off on both ends. It is only my suggestion as the Tahoe I inherited (Son hit black ice) all 4 corners were broke. I didn’t think twice about what I was going to do, even with stainless steel headers I eventually got. I use anti-seize on everything and dielectric grease if electric. Does this make sense? It is my experience guided by results.

@@videos-for-friends Ask! I have seen and learned a lot on imports, domestics and working with GM. What I say imports, I mean British, Swedish, German, DeLoreon, Italian, Japanese, etc. Ever heard of the Nissan Patrol or Presidential? Adjust valves on a 12 cylinder Jag? Pre-War Pontiac, Plymouth and Ford repairs! Then let’s repair Farm equipment as tractor are split into 3 parts, hay equipment has one belt is 19 feet long and runs down the middle, School bus clutches & king pins on straight axles. Yamaha dealer tech, bore Harley cylinders or cut valves and seats with tungsten carbide cutters up to 2.2 inches to 0.6 inch. You need the correct pilots of course. CIS fuel injection, carbs from every side draft, down draft, up draft and sync multiples? Ask.

Interesting. I have a 2004 Sierra with the LM7. I installed Gibson SS headers when the truck had less than 5000 on it. It now has 250K on it and I recently replaced both cylinder heads. Not one cracked bolt! The Gibson headers have a lot of bolt hole play. Seams to support your theory.

There’s a few million mile ones out there, and many many many with over 500,000. I’d say 300,000 is a walk in the park. If you even halfway take care of it you’ll be fine. I’ve seen poorly maintained ones with 250,000 that run perfect. My brother has a GMC with the 5.3 and he forgets to change the oil all the time and has gone over 20,000 between changes at times
