If you have a tube tire, the easiest way is two person lift up from the wing. Take out the tube from the out side of the tire, check the debre is out, put in the new inner tube and inflate. Carrying a pair of spare tubes and a light weight inflater helps a lot.

I flew into Manston on an LAA open weekend earlier this year and the museum is really good, spent so long there that the NAAFI cafe had closed by the time I’d finished! Great result Terry, really helpful people you found. I’ve had more than my fair share of punctures an so in my aircraft I carry a small portable electric tyre inflator, a spare inner tube, motorcycle tyre levers and a small bottle of shower gel - the latter being to make it easier to get the tyre back onto the rim! Adds a bit of extra weight but worth it to be reasonably self sufficient. I think my series of punctures were due to the age of the tyres, flakes coming off the sidewalls and rubbing inside the tyre on the inner tube. Since replacing all the tyres and inner tubes I’ve not had a single puncture.

What a great bunch of guys! I've always worried about being stranded when I land away somewhere remote. In reality there is very little that you can do without carrying a load of spares and tools. That said I do carry a small bicycle pump and a puncture repair kit as well as a few spanners, etc. I've toyed with the idea of making a light weight stand to prop under the undercarriage leg just high enough to get the wheel off the ground.
@QnC7613 күн бұрын
Haha. I have the same aircraft and had the same issue with the front wheel. Since then I keep always 2 pcs inner tube + xiaomi air pump + small electric screwdriver + strong powerbank in the plane. Good to see that you was able to solve this situation whith a help of a lot of nice people.

Great video. I used to fly into Manston in my Jodel to clear customs. On one occasion I landed in a strong crosswind, virtually across the runway (in those days it was very wide). In earlier days I flew with 617 Gliding School briefly at Manston. Great to see the museum stuff!

It always heartens me to see the willingness of fellow aviators to le lend helping hand. Mich like the narrow boat community. In this case they weren't even aviation people so even more humane of them. They may even have enjoyed the chance to work on something different. If so a win all round.

great video - punctures in the sidewall are always because of too little tyrepressure and/or not enough talk (powder) between tube and tyre so they scuff against each other during landing and "rip" a hole in the tube... I fly the Vans RV6's and 7's and learned the hard way. Tyre pressure to be correct - and "lubrication" between tube and tyre :) thanks for sharing.

What a great ground crew. Love the Lightning. As well as M2, my dad's log books showed he was cleared to 60000 in them! There's a cockpit of one hooked up to simulator software at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. Managed to squeeze myself in and have a quick "flight".

That is amassing, the English elecxtric lightening could outclimb any aircraft we have today, even the typhoon. History is important, we must honor it and treasure it to remember the sacrifice made by others on our behalf and so honor them as well, not only 'the few' but the thousands of others who perished in bomber command, both then, and now, as we possibly face war with Putin, we must remember the lessons of the past, and draw on them and apply them to today, my grand father was in the RFC, an air borne radio operator, my late mother grew up during the war, so my late family always had a close affinity with those times, i hope the museum really takes off in every sense, they do us a grate service, good luck to them.

Great story. I've been there, and got really lucky. Often I do a touch-and-go at my home airfield before leaving the area, and that habit saved our bacon this time. During the touch-and-go it got a little exciting. Right side was sagging, rough, and very draggy. We had planned to go to a mountain dirt airstrip, where there are is no road access to the outside world, and only a tiny town serviced by boat. Fortunately we were still at home, on pavement, with aircraft services (sort of), and even then it was an all-weekend affair. I think often about where we might have been stranded. We could send messages, but how would we get parts & services to us? Would that wheel have gouged into the dirt and caused real damage?

Another superb video! What a wonderful bunch of guys and gals, both at the museum and Powermain to get you back in the air to beat the sun going down. As for the museum, that used to be the MT section when I was stationed there in 1969/70, and talking about the NAAFI, in July 1969, we sat up all night watching the first men land/walking on the moon. I really must get back down there in 2025 to have a good look around. I wonder if that was the Chippie I blagged a ride in back in '69🤔.....a trip around Dover Castle and back and a few aeros over Pegwell Bay....happy days😃....Once again, thank's Terry for your videos🙂

Thanks Terry. Great video. I carry an extra inner tube whenever I flyout. It's one thing to find mechanic on a field, have no tube, and then only to have no way to repair it pending a one week delivery, so I keep a spare with me. For the same reason I keep and entire array of the toggle switches. I have had two toggles break/snap on me, fortunately only Strobes/Nav lights, so I was able to continue flight activities, but if a master/avionics switch broke and I was away from home it would take a few days to get one shipped. Mechanics are frequently easier to find than the part you need right away. I also keep a spare Ducati regulator as I happen to have one and that is a known occasional failure point.
@ShortField14 күн бұрын
You are so right, we have a few switches and small stuff in a box in the back but we really should carry a spare tube, have started bringing that tyre weld stuff with me now though.

Look into a sealant called slime, available in places like euro car parts Green stuff Just pour it into the tyre valve and top up the air and your off Only use a small amount considering the tyre size of the plane
@Sn00pyJ50814 күн бұрын
Puncture in the tube sidewall is unlikely to be caused by FOD. Especially so of the tyre itself wasn’t damaged too?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the museum when Manston reopens as a redeveloped internatiional airport. It is going to happen, all the relevant hoops have been jumped through, permission to operate has been granted etc.

Under inflated tires cause rubbing between the tire and the tube - most likely the cause!
@poetpilot5 күн бұрын
ooo and annuver fing... I've never tried this but it's supposed to be an old pilots' trick for flat tyres. I cannot guarantee that it works and even if it gets you home your tyre will probably be wrecked! But they did used to say, if you're stuck, stuff the tyre full of grass or straw until it's chockablock. Luckily I've never been caught out. I did get a flattie, landing at the old Eurostar factory strip in Warwickshire years ago but because it was the factory, they supplied me with a new inner and helped me change it over. Something else we learned operating the Eurostar.... never let the tyre pressure drop more than 3 psi below the book pressure. If you did, you'd get "graze" punctures resulting from the inner rubbing against the tyre firewall. I used the check the pressures on our Eurostars daily after I found that out.

İ don't have plan b for this situation, too. Sometimes, I land remote places. If this happens, I don't know what to do. My friends carry a repair kit for their tubeless tiers, but there is no way to repair tubed tiers without removing it and don't know how to like you.

Great question and yes I was a bit concerned about that but it was just for a single flight and when I got back I had the engineers take the whole thing apart again and fit a new innertube.
@spamhead14 күн бұрын
I suppose if it was just a dodgy tube or grit between it and the tyre then probably OK. Not ok on a tubeless car tyre with a sidewall puncture though.
