PS--it's amazing to think that Napoleon ended up on St. Helena in the early 19th century. Imagine the challenges getting there from Europe on a sailing ship all those years ago!
@gate8475
@gate8475 Ай бұрын
Thats nothing, they were already going to South Africa, Australia and NZ on regular basis, which are much much further away. I always wondered why would they sail around africa. couldnt they just disembark from a ship in egypt, use a caravan of carriages to go acroos a small strip of land of what is now suez canal and hop on a new ship sail off for the rest of the colonies
@whohan779
@whohan779 Ай бұрын
@@gate8475 Easy answer: transporting cargo on land was much more difficult back then. Even today ships have the most capacity out of all modes of transport apart from ludicrously long trains (like in Mauritania). If you thing piracy was a problem at sea; then you're in for a treat as to how bad it was on land.

It's a shame you didnt make it up the stairs, I really wanted to see whats up there, and a little more about the historical landmarks would be great. In general, a little more about the destinations would be nice in your videos. This delay did allow you to gey more footage in St. Helena and I really do appreciate that. I understand why you were stressed about it though seeing as you had a series of flights booked, and we really do all need a day to just rest sometimes. Absolutely loved this video, St Helena is a fascinating place that I have visited several times. Shame you didn’t visit Napoleon’s house or go to the Governor’s House where you can see Jonathan, the world’s oldest tortoise who is 192 years old. I don’t know if the church was open but would also have been worth a visit to see the memorial plaques on the walls; one to a chap who met an untimely end whilst collecting guano from a rock and a tragic one to a 2 year old baby who was orphaned, losing her parents on the voyage from India, only to succumb on St Helena. The voyage from Cape Town on the RMS St Helena was always fun and never boring. Deck cricket was great fun, played with a ball made of nylon rope in a turban head knot by the crew, all sorts of other deck games, pub games in the evening, a good library but most of all a truly captivating group of fellow passengers, always. They used to range from doctors, teachers, customs officers (one had some glorious tales to tell), men of the cloth, barristers coming out to try a big case, we met one chap who whose goal in life was to play on every golf course in the world, ornithologists looking for the St Helena Wirebird. As an intrepid traveller you wouldn’t have been bored! Wonderful island, fascinating people. ❤

Hi Noel. This has been my most favourite trip report you have ever posted. Amazing location and top quality content which we have become accustomed to from you. It’s always great to see locations which we only hear about. It’s great that you have dedicated your time to visit these out of the ordinary locations and report back on. Thanks you.

A friend of mine was in charge of getting the airport built . Moved from Eastbourne to live there for a few years to get it sorted. She had to get there via Navy ships. Looks Like she done an amazing Job ! Well done Helen Standen !!

My first tought was how well it integrates into its surroundings. How well it use the local rocks combined with concrete. Reminded me of Franck Lloyd Wright "Falling water" in that regard. Well done to her!

Helen wasn't in charge of getting the airport built. It was Janet Lawrence and Sharon Wainwright before her. Helen did change management for SHG

Yeah, flights to small islands like this can cost a pretty penny. I live in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, AK, and it costs roughly $1500 round-trip from Anchorage to the island. Not great when you're dealing with serious medical issues, that's for sure!

Fabulous video. Especially the footage of the approach in to landing, and just after take off. I could see some of the bumpiness. And when that cheeky wave came up out of nowhere: it was like the wave was a person crouching down, silently out of sight, then suddenly jumping out and shouting "BOO!"!!

Since you are a FAA certificated private pilot, let me share a couple of my notes: The RNP 19 is the preferred approach and the MDA is 1540ft (DH 527ft), so you need about 600ft of hard ceiling to land there. The kicker is the 2200m visibility requirement (or basically 1 1/3 miles). If you can't break out at 1500ft and see the entire runway, it's game over. The problem with "game over" at St. Helena is where the hell do you divert to? A E190 can't carry six hours of gas, so it's a "point of no return" thing. If you don't have the minimums when you hit the PNR, you turn around and go back. In a lot of cases, I suspect they just don't launch to St. Helena. That makes getting stranded there a 50/50 thing. The runway is 6300ft long, so it could support an A319, but there isn't enough traffic there to justify it (nor could enough cargo be carried to make it worthwhile, hence the E190). The other reason for using an E190 (or any E-jet for that matter) is it is a beast in wind conditions. You can drop that into a parking lot in a 60kt headwind and not break a sweat (although the pilot may not feel that way...). It has to be a E190 because of the extra fuel it can carry. You could run a E175 there, but there's that "trade gas for payload thing" that doesn't make that work either. My second thought, what a wonderful little island. WOW! I think in two days, you can probably get around the island, get some rest and a decent meal and hop back on the airplane and fly out (presuming the flight isn't cancelled). Finally, thanks for sharing. Since I am a RW flight dispatcher working for an airline, I know the whole "have a plan B (and C)"".. must be in your back pocket at all times. If something happens, you go the next day...or the next. I've been doing that now for 45 years, so I stopped sweating that many many years ago. Keep taking us to the "off the beaten track" places. You are showing us the world that many don't get to see, and places that, as a practical matter, we will likely never get to visit...all the best!!

I would love to go to Saint Helena. I hope you have some decent time off to rest with your family, Noel. I was hoping you would relax a bit more and enjoy your isolation in a unique place - and I was willing you to go up the rest of the steps! I would have loved to see more of this amazing destination with such lovely people.
