It's interesting how there are so much sound going, but they manage to turn down/up certain tracks to draw attention and manipulate the emotion effectively.

Exactly, and not to mention removing the music completely! I'm glad you found it interesting 👍

I remember that these splits were on the Day After Tomorrow DVD Special Features, and I really loved that. I appreciate your commentary at the end.

Thank you for these videos, showing us how different movies and scenes use different sound layer structures is very useful and informative

You can almost hear they mixed it with the music at first :) The whole scene I was wondering "Where the hell are those helicopter impacts!? That much steel must have had more weight crushing down from the skies!". But with music I guess they indeed tried to squeeze everything in which left less space for dynamics. Cool piece though, lots of layers, little but well thought foley, and the winner being the storm hum, which is straight out scary and I truly love this kind of sound design. Works in background but expands on the scale of the terror around.

Yeah they really handled the storm sound design much like you'd handle the dread of an unstoppable force in a thriller/horror movie. Thanks for the interest!

Was any processing - compression, gain, limiting, etc - done to the levels of original sounds when editing this video??'
@INDEPTHSoundDesign6 жыл бұрын
None! All of the stems came directly from the DVD special feature where it breaks down this scene layer by layer.

So its safe to say these are the levels used by the rerecording mixers??? thanks for the answer and keep it up :)

Ooooh that's so tough to say. You can never be sure what they might be doing to the audio when bouncing them down to stems or putting them on DVD. I've noticed a few glaring mistakes on stems before, too.
