Probably the only interview of Jarre discussing the making of Zoolook in depth. Lots of amazing new and delicious informations (The Irish neighbour samples, how they made the fairlight sound like it was 44K with clear high frequencies and not low bitrate 32K, how he was amazed by the enormous 15Kb sizes of some samples...) thanks for unearthing this !

I wonder if the irish neighbor is the low pitched voice on Ethnicolor towards the beginning. I’d kill to pick Jarre’s brain about zoolook for another hour. Laurie and Jarre should’ve worked together more

The most boldly innovative and brilliantly executed original work from JMJ … his best work in the eyes of some … so complex and dense … must have been a technical nightmare to mix … yet the spacial elements pop out for the headphone wearer … nuggets of sound that makes you gawp in amazement at the unique nature of the voices, and the sounds … and their synthesis. Such a lot of hard work to produce an album just 37 minutes long … but an essential addition to every craftsman musician’s collection … pointing the way on how to be truly creative … and sonically inspiring. Musically stirring too …

When I bought the cassette tape of Zoolook when it came out I remember my friend's reaction - "You mean as in - look into a zoo?". But actually its more like looking out of a zoo I think. The way animials might see us - or hear us.

Wow! I loved Zoolook from when it came out but there was no information available at the time. This is interview should be in a museum of electronic music.

Personally I think that the original French pressing on CD is the best edition of this album, with the two remixes of Zoolook and Zoolookologie, though the Scott Hull remaster is also very enjoyable as well. Thanks for posting! 👍

Awesome interview! Thank you very much for posting it. Btw, i think that Zoolook is the most underrated album of music history.

So he used the Yamaha DX9 instead of the DX7 on Zoolook, interesting...
@ScunnyBoy1972 Жыл бұрын
basically the DX 9 is the preset-only version of the DX 7
@AnalogAudio1 Жыл бұрын
@@ScunnyBoy1972 Completely wrong, who told you that? The DX9 is a clearly scaled down version of the DX7 and did not sell well. Even weaker than the DX21, DX27 or DX100. It has only 4 operators instead of 6, only 8 algorithms instead of 32, no feedback loop, keyboard without velocity and aftertouch, no cartridge slot, only 20 RAM memories instead of 32. And yes, still programmable, not preset only. There was a time in 1984, where the DX7 was permamently sold out. Everybody wanted one. Some people used the DX9 instead until they got their preordered DX7, which was by far the better instrument.

At around 14:40 he talks about the DX7 and that might explain why he used the DX9.
