Evha Jannath was on a trip to Drayton Manor. She was riding the Splash Canyon river rapids ride at the theme park when she was "propelled" into the water. Evha, who was couldn't swim, fell from a boat at the park when it collided with a wall. She then drowned. Although a jury inquest in 2019 concluded she died accidentally, the tragic and avoidable incident sent shockwaves around the United Kingdom but also unravelled and exposed a series of mistakes and systematic failings that could have prevented the young girls demise. This is the infamous story of Evha Jannath and the Splash canyon disaster.

I feel sorry for the teacher as well. Of course she had no idea that something so horrific was going to happen and had to stay with a lone child instead of with a group. If she hadn't, the child could've been kidnapped and the teacher would have been blamed for that. She must be absolutely haunted by this tragedy.

Well…..obviously? She shouldn’t have been standing, but it shouldn’t have been so easy to. There shouldn’t have been only 2 workers on a ride that has such a high rate of people ignoring the rules. Maybe a ride like that shouldn’t even be operating, since those rules are in place for safety but they’re not able to be enforced. The park was not 100% at fault of course, but the whole point is that this accident was literally just waiting to happen. It was unlucky that it just happened to end up being that little girl, rather than one of the 70 other documented people that day that were standing on the ride.

I’m genuinely sorry this young girl lost her life, truly I am. But I feel very angry (& I remember feeling this way when the story first broke) that the family are blaming the teachers for this. Evha & the rest of the children were old enough to understand simple, clear, precise instructions - to stay seated throughout the ride. Evha fell in, & was told to *stay put* after she exited the water so that those adults on other rides could get her help, she refused & tried to climb up a dangerous & slippery slope. As an ex nursery nurse, we’re honoured to be entrusted with others kids lives every single day. We do our upmost to keep them safe, fed, watered, to teach them right from wrong, to educate them, to make sure they’re clean & dry, & that every day they go home with a smile on their face. However, we’re not super human. We do not go home with your children. We can not dish out the same rules at home as they have in nursery (‘remember your listening ears please!’) I’m pretty sure the ratio for the teachers was correct (so many students to so many teachers), but as mentioned, teachers can’t tear themselves into four. It’s safer to stay on ‘land’ with the kids who don’t want to go on the ride, than it is to go on the ride. I was going on rides like this at 8 years old, I knew to stay seated & listen to instructions. It’s a horrible tragedy, & yes, the ride obviously needed an overhaul.. but to blame those teachers when they already had guilt on their shoulders (despite it not being their fault) is just plain wrong.

Some kids try to listen but are impulsive and therefore need extra supervision. the child to teacher ratio may have been sufficient under normal circumstances but clearly not enough for this type of field trip where there is increased danger. Not blaming the teachers, some blame goes to the school district, but mostly the amusement park, & the inspectors that approve the rides, there should be more fail safes.

This is so sad and even more sad that when she fell off the first time she was unharmed, but continued not to listen, if she had listened to any instruction at all she would still be here, as a teacher it's unfortunate to hear the teacher was blamed over an incident only Evha could control, I know it's difficult to have no one to blame but I can only imagine what that teacher was/is feeling, we spend LONG hours with these kids and love and care for them, I'm sure there was already guilt having to choose one child over the others, but after seeing that incident with one of her students and the parents blaming her?? She probably tried to get out of the water as fast as possible because it was cold. The video mentions that the operators didn't instruct the visitors, not to stand up in the boat. There were 70 instances of people standing up in the boats that day, captured on CC TV footage. I can imagine the kids seeing other people standing up and doing the same, because they weren't instructed to stay seated. I don't blame the teacher. But I think there should be a rule, that kids need to be seated with other adults. The ride operators could have split up the kids group in two and placed them in a boat with at least one adult of another boat ride. Edit: I read in a news article, that three teachers from her school were in a boat behind them. So they wren't short-staffed, like I would have thought. I really don't understand why they let a group of kids in the boat without one of the other teachers. Sorry If you got several replies my comment did't show up at first.

As a former school bus driver particularly for middle school ages I can say this kid did nothing out of the ordinary. For as many people saying they would never do something stupid like this as kids, I've seen just as many who did. I had to constantly pull the bus over to get them to sit TF down, it's like they had ants and being require to sit all day in class only makes them anxious. They will egg each other on too, switching assigned seats, running up and down the isles and climbing over seats. I couldn't see anything out of my back windows because at one point every kid on my bus was standing up and screaming. I'm sorry parents but your kids are doing dumb stuff, you're just not around to see it. We had to call parents into the school terminal and make them watch thier little spawns in action The looks on thier faces watching thier kids on camera was priceless as now your child has become such a danger they can nolonger ride the bus. This is YOUR parenting and YOUR child participating in absolute chaos and havoc while someone is operating tons of vehicle. They would even throw text books, pencil and small rocks out of my windows and hit other passing vehicles. I guarantee you they were laughing, screaming and having a good time until they had to watch thier friend die. These kids think everything is funny until it's too late.

When you were working your way along the queue line to where the boats were there were signs every so often reminding you to be sensible on the ride, to stay seated, not to run to the boat on the rotating platform etc (this was in the 90s and early 00s….not been for a few years so not sure if they’re still there.) At 11 years old I knew not to stand up on that ride as there was a danger of falling in. It’s horrific that this happened to her but blame can’t be placed solely on Drayton manor.

Im frustrated that she was unable to listen to 2 important rules that could have saved her life. 1.) Sit on the ride. No standing up. 2.) Somebody told her to STAY PUT once she fell off the ride and was at the wall. She of course, didn't. People, teach your kids the importance of listening to adults and rules. Too many times I see kids acting up and behaving like maniacs because their parents are too weak to tell their kid NO, in fear of the kid being upset. I dont care, have your kid be upset they didn't get their way.. its better than them carrying that bad behavior when left unattended and paying for it with their life.

Being blunt will probably piss some people off, but here it goes. The park isn't at fault. The teacher isn't at fault. The ride is perfectly safe as long as you stay seated, and I've heard that there are even signs in the line telling you to stay seated and whatnot. You can blame staff for this or the school for that, but it all comes down to the children weren't following directions. The ride was short staffed, as a result they couldn't keep a constant eye on the cameras. But even if they had seen her fall, at the same time so did other people. I'm sure staff would have told her to stay put like the other person had told her, and she would have done the same and kept going. Staff isn't going to just jump in after her. There's also the fact that the girl couldn't swim. The only reason she died is because she couldn't swim. How does this put the ride at fault? She wasn't injured by any of the equipment. The only way this would have been prevented is if they removed the water, which would make it a pretty useless ride. No, they cannot add seatbelts. In the case that the boats tipped, got stuck or whatever the seat belts could become a safety hazard if people couldn't get them off. The boats rock back and forth but it's not like they're going 30 mph. People are angry they didnt provide another teacher to go with them. It was a small group so as a result only one teacher had been put in charge. The group earned the trip to the park for having excellent behavior. It seems like these children were thought to be well behaved enough to go to an amusment park in the first place. So of course with the ride that they were going on, which is a safe ride, it would be suspected that the children would continue to behave. As everyone keeps saying, yes they are kids. That doesn't mean they're stupid. They can read the signs, they can hear any warnings that may have been mentioned, they can see the rapid waves and I'm sure that when they're being rocked from side to side they can get the sense that they don't have good balance. It was supposed to be a short ride that they could handle being on for a few minutes, they're not little toddlers. Parents will let children that young do things like walk to the store or to school on their own, or sometimes even be out after dark. I feel like people just need to have someone to blame other than the victim. If anything at all, then I guess choose to blame the school for not thinking ahead that this type of situation may occur. You can't blame the park, you can say the staff may have been negligent in enforcing the rules but it's still not their fault, and you can't blame the teacher that was supervising. In a case where it's a single student versus a group of students together it's safer to stick with the single student. That child could have been kidnapped if they were left alone. This was a sad case that happened because a group of kids decided that they wanted to do what they wanted to do at that moment, instead of what they should have been doing. This type of logic doesn't stick to just children either. Even adults act on dumb impulses sometimes and it can cost them dearly. In this case, it's only because the child couldn't swim that it ended up fatal.

i disagree, the park is at fault for some, considering theres only cctv to view the ride and no park member saw her fall in, AND the employees weren't trained in water rescue. AND they'd been warned about this very thing possibly happening, and ignored it. they should not get away with that
@RavenFilms
@RavenFilms Жыл бұрын
The park should get some blame, nothing is black and white, but in proportion I would put that blame at 10-15%. The areas they were lacking probably wouldn’t have saved her, after all, she didn’t listen *twice*, but there some room for improvement. I think there is a real issues here, in that, because she was a child, people are afraid to point out she was the problem. If she was 18, the comments would be full of people giving her the Darwin Award, but because she wasn’t then somehow she’s not responsible? I think not. She was 11 and clearly capable of being well behaved, which is how she ended up on the trip. She knew right from wrong. And even without signs or instructions at the start of the ride, by her age, all kids know not to stand on rides. And I can guarantee they got a talk on the bus about that too. Kids do dumb things, so do adults. For something this obviously dangerous and wrong At her age, there’s no excuse. By 11, her being willing do decide to do that (probably with friends encouragement) shows the course of her development, she would still be just as likely do have done the exact same thing as 21.

I've watched a LOT of videos similar to this and MY take is that some of them could have been prevented by simply following the rules. As a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I have no problems with any particular rides by type... However, you're not entirely "wrong" as it were... Whenever there are obvious and strange noises from a ride you know well, you SHOULD be concerned. Now, I'll be along with the rest to assure you that there ARE safety devices and redundancies, ESPECIALLY from recent history, and that Busch Gardens has one of the TOP safety records in the nation, if not worldwide. Being stuck a while is likely the worst you'd risk... That said, I ALWAYS at least report any strange mechanical sounds or sensations that concern me to a staff member or operator. As I tell them, "I'd rather say something than live with the possibility that my silence cost someone their life." Usually, they make a note of whatever my concern is and the best I can describe about where on the ride it happened and what it sounded like... so they can bring that to "Maintenance". I won't tell you to do something you're not comfortable with... Obviously, that is NOT my place to say. I can only explain how I try to conduct myself, to help the Theme Parks and Water Parks and any Carnies that travel through so they can keep their machinery as safe as possible... I also ride motorcycles like a bat out of hell, go solo rock-climbing, and caving among the myriad of dubious, difficult, dangerous, and dirty hobbies I engage in. It takes quite a lot to "rattle my cage", but there's never any harm letting someone in the business know that you think a ride might have a maintenance issue. Most times, it's an idiosyncrasy and not very important or something minor is worn and still no danger, but you never know... We're not engineers. ...BUT I will say that running away hasn't solved anything either. ;o)

Muslim women aren't allowed to swim in most cases. It's not appropriate and would generally only happen when it's just them and their husband, but the woman would still have to be fully covered because she would presumably be outside of the home. She went to a religious, Muslim school and was rewarded with this trip for following religious rules, so her family was likely devout and thus never gave their daughter swimming lessons. Edit: And this is for genuinely devout Muslims. Not naive reverts and ignorant westerners.

i will agree that if the rides are unsafe, then yes make the needed repairs, but these rides have been around and theres a reason there are rules. Im not blaming the child and its sad she lost her life, but the school should have more supervision available, kids are young and sometimes get rowdy. there should have been a teacher with them as well as one with the kids that didnt want to ride. I remember riding rides like this as a kid, and the bumps is part of it cause of the "rapids." Like i stated, yes, there are tons of rides everywhere that need major repairs or just be torn down, but a lack of supervision was noted. Its sadly like the boy that was decapitated by trying to retrieve his cap, and went into an area where warning signs and signs of do not enter were posted.

I'm not even saying you're wrong, but wouldn't it make more sense that a ride for 6+ would be safe for 6+, user error bw damned? With how sad this, it could have been avoidable. Standing up is the main cause of death for many boat or river rides. It’s why most of them will tell you to stay seated but because people don’t listen they get hurt. The same thing happened at a six flags park causing the ride to close down for years. People need to realize that rules are in place for a reason and are not just suggestions. It’s very sad to hear her story. Drayton manor was my childhood theme park and the shock wave was my first big roller coaster. I actually have several on ride photos of me and my sisters on splash canyon- one of us standing up in the boat to take the photo. I am about 12 in the picture. I know everyone always thinks it won’t happen to them and looking back I guess I was the same way. I don’t recall being reprimanded by staff when we purchased the photo- but I’ll bet they sold many photos to people who were standing up in the boats. This should have been a clear indicator that they needed to do more to enforce the safety rules. This was back in 1998. Poor girl. I hope her family are able to find some peace.

Living in Birmingham, Drayton Manor was my childhood theme park, too. I've got a photo of me with my parents and my daughter on Splash Canyon about ten years ago as she looks about 14. I've got my back to the camera and I'm turning my head to get my face in the shot. My daughter is to my left. I didn't realise at the time, to get in the shot, she sat so far forward on her seat, she's pressed up against the steering wheel in the centre. I can't make out if there are seatbelts on Splash Canyon, but no one reprimanded us or my daughter when we bought the photo. If there are seatbelts, perhaps an alarm should go off to alert the rider/ride operator. It just goes to show how easy it was for this poor young girl to fall in the water and die.

When my high school took us to Jamberoo Action Park, we were tested in the wavepool and given coloured wristbands to determine what we could use. Confident swimmers had blue bands and could use everything, okayish swimmers had green bands and could go rides where you're in some kind of seat and could only enter deeper water if supervised, and people who couldn't swim were given red bands and not allowed in water above their hips. I was barely eligible for the middle group. Luckily, the deepest water I ever wanted to be in was Rapid River, which is a calm and lazy ride on a donut floaty. I really gotta go back one of these days. I love that place.

It's so annoying when idiotic and careless people ruin things for everyone else. Whilst her death is sad, it was 100% preventable on her part if she had followed basic safety instructions like everyone else. Her falling out of the ride is one thing but her actively choosing to ignore adults and climb up a clearly unsafe contraption is genuinely so dumb, especially when she was unable to swim. It's difficult to sympathise when people actively choose to put themselves in dangerous and unsafe situations. Her parents are selfish for blaming the park when the park is at no fault, although some blame could be attributed to the school for not supervising the kids properly.

I would be even stricter than some of the other commenters. I grew up living by the water. My first thought was, what was a girl who could not swim doing on a ride like that? No person, adult or child, belongs on a water ride, boat, float, or any kind of conveyance if they cannot swim. Too much can happen despite knowing how to swim, and being a non-swimmer in those situations is a chance no one can afford to take. I would also disagree that the 80 centimeter water was not dangerous. All you've got to do is slip and not be able to get up, or get pinned down somehow, and suddenly it's every bit as dangerous. I think the park should have known better. But everyone should know to respect the water.

considering there have been several drowning incidents on different river rapid rides, i feel like it might be a good idea to mandate water safety training for any safe working a water ride just in case. i understand many ride operators are teenagers, but i think that water safety training should become a part of the mandatory training before any worker operates a water ride. in the rare occasion that a passenger falls into the water, the staff on site have the training to help, and wouldn’t have to wait and call first aid from the other side of the park

Well it wasn't "just teenagers" there was 70 plus incdents that day alone this girl died. It's the people running the amusement parks. They could always hire people who aren't "just teenagers" but then these greedy corner cutting companies and corporations would have to pay their employees a livible wage along with the proper training. They also tend to try and get people to believe it's "just teenagers" that are causing these disasters when in reality its their greedy cost cutting practices. Its like that case of McDonald's saying that woman who was burned by their coffee was just trying to get money when she had 3rd degree burns. Many of these amusement park rides don't even have safety manuals or can make their OWN safety manuals that dont have an organization like OSHA making sure they're safe or up to a code. That's what these parks really need, an actual safety organization making sure these scumbags are up to and following a safety code.

It's rather chilling to know that such a 'calm' looking amusement park ride (one that you'd think is as safe as a merry go round, or ferris wheel - still acknowledging that every ride can lead to injury or death) has resulted in several known accidents and deaths. I'm in Australia and we all know about what happened at our Dreamworld, though the manner of how the ride led to the deaths were completely different than this story. I read the full Coroner's Inquest report on our tragedy which was very lengthy and included all other incidences relating to the ride prior to the major accident. There were a lot. Knowing these incidents are logged but not known to the public (until its too late and they all emerge following a disaster) is bloody terrifying. I love the scariest rides... as a kid I obviously had no sense of mechanical failures... but now, any time I get on one, I truly expect it to be my demise. After all, we're silly humans seeking thrills via extremely dangerous means... even with the best engineers and designs, machines still fail.... and worse, when humans are operating them - either at the controls or as a 'passenger'. I mean you have to wonder... where is the liability, really? Maybe there should be consent forms at amusement parks when you enter, where you sign off that you accept that death may result from your visit. Why do we trust the people that run these little places to ensure safety checks etc are done routinely? As a physicist, I kinda feel like we're fools for going on these rides. Hey, even NASA fucks up and those guys aren't building rollercoasters, ya know?

Swimming lessons should be mandatory for all children.

Every year my school went on an amusement park trip. Our groups where like this, and teachers where often split up. Even the 6th graders where one enough to understand like this and we never had issues. I’m not blaming the child, but I am Definitely not blaming the teacher.

That's why survival skills are VERY IMPORTANT... Like knowing how to swim.. float.. and tread water from young age until forever... Keep up with it... you can help and save yourself and save and help someone else... it is very suitable thing.. very helpful and gentle💖💕👌I'm currently trying to get into learning to float and tread water... I can only swim backwards and forwards but I cant float or tread water... that's my downfall ACTUALLY... I MUST LEARN... to help myself and help someone else if I need too... DEFINITELY 👌✌👍 LIKE ASAP though

As sad as it is, she sid not do as she was told, she refused to listen to adults when they told her to stay put. Shes old enough to understand instructions, she might not have had an idea of the danger, but shes in fast flowing water, REFUSED to sit down, REFUSED to listen to people, and ultimately lost her life for it. Its all well and good saying the park was at fault because of some safety issues, she was being an idiot. No, not sorry. If they cant be trusted to read and follow signs, they should not be on the ride. The girl was irresponsible, sadly it cost her her life.

The first time I got on a ride like this I was about four or five years old with my 3 cousins. I knew better not to stand up when I’m moving a ride and to hold onto the middle steering wheel of that ride. It’s a tragedy, The kids are hardheaded and it cost this girl her life

This is going to sound harsh but play stupid games, win stupid prizes. She made many poor decisions that resulted in her death

Children specialize in making poor decisions. There should have been enough adults with the group to adequately supervise the children, and an adult should have been on each car that the children were on.

@@JosieJOK And the students that didn't want to get on the ride, they should wait by themselves? Maybe more of the parents should've volunteered. Maybe the children should've been taught about the dangers of ignoring rules which falls on the parents.

Yup, also in loco parentis , this is a term from Latin that applies in American law , it translates to in the place of patents , it’s on the school , not the park , ride operators or parents. The school should have gotten more staff , gone as a bigger group so more teachers were there or gotten chaperones, but they didn’t.

@@curiouser-and-curiouser yes, enough for one adult on each car and one to wait. Or at least one adult to go on the ride with a few students at a time and one to wait; the adults can switch off.

So she ignored the rules & fell in then didn't listen to people trying to help her & drowns & it's all everyone else's fault. The parents have to accept that she is partly responsible for her own death. Yes the park has a responsibility to maintain safety but so does the riders that's why there's rules

Sounds like a little girl that didn't listen and no adult to supervise her- I don't blame the teacher, I blame the school or higher powers for not requiring multiple teachers to be present within a group of children.

There's a similar one in the United States at Valley Fair. They pay workers to sit in blind spots to make sure people are following rules. There's one person at the beginning and another at the end of the tunnel, one at the top of the tallest hill and one or two in remote areas of the ride even though they are the slowest moving areas of the ride.

The parents are to blame as they clearly didn't teach their child any respect or to listen to adults.
