It's the morning after the deadly flood in the small village of Schuld on the river Ahr. The extent of the natural disaster is gradually becoming clear.
Schuld has a 1000-year history and has survived several wars. But now, it has been stricken by destructive weather. On the night into July 15, following heavy downpours, the river swelled and nearly swept the village away, wreaking havoc on everything that stood in its path. Normally, the Ahr is barely a meter deep as it passes through Schuld. It swelled to a monstrous depth of almost eight meters. Residents barely had time to react.

The flood came in so quickly that people didn’t have time to react. They were all trying to save their families at the same time, the carers were trying to get them up higher, but most people they couldn’t get to because the flood prevented them from opening the doors. The biggest long term problem is now the high sediment load in the river system, reducing its capacity and making future flooding - after less rainfall than now - inevitable. We have the same problem locally, thousands of tons of sediment were washed into the river during a flood 10+ years ago, now the area floods each year.
@philiphoward4966

you are so right, I have a large Villa in Spain with a lot of land, we had very heavy rainfall three years ago which resulted in flooding. much of the water and topsoil went into the drains. A month later we realised all the drains were blocked it took us a week to dig out and clear the drains with 4 men. Three months ago after 2 years a substantial 2.7m wall collapsed , 75 metres long, the foundations had been washed away in the flooding. It will take years to recover from this, so many nasty surprises ahead. Germany doesn’t have the spare labour to deal with this. The number. of humidifiers to dry the homes out before work can begin is enormous. In the UK when the river Thames flooded a few years ago the insurance Companies settled most of the claims but refused to Insure the properties going forward which has resulted in the collapse in the value of those properties. So far the German Government has been very poor in their financial response to the problem, they talk about infrastructure but very little is said about actually helping the families. They will get no help from the EU empty promises. Such a horrible, tragic experience for so many. The way the public has responded has been wonderful.

My love goes out to the amazing Deutschland people of these villages who have lost so much and suffered so much. I am moved with compassion as if watching my own brother or sister, mother or father, grandmother or grandfather, enduring through something like this. From America to Germany Ich liebe dich, meine Gebete sind bei dir. John 14:6
