This city is very aesthetically pleasing. Good effort, just a few small things compounding to completely annihilate your traffic
@zmc94035 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the intersections at 18:06 were mostly an aesthetic decision. Viewing it from above at 18:20, it looks like the ‘crown jewel’ of the city. It’s a shame that it was so much less efficient than the rectangular intersections which replaced it, as the rectangular intersections were much less visually appealing. It’s possible the ‘jewel’ (that’s what I’m going to call it) intersections were still viable, as I’d wager a good portion of the backups were due to the traffic type limitation, which were removed later in the video.

can you come to portland and fix the actual roads my job would be so less stressfull lol
@JETZcorp4 жыл бұрын
I was looking on Google satellite view at Portland to see what could be improved without having to pour any new concrete. Both bridges over the Columbia demand some better Biffa Lane Mathematics, as does the 405 loop. And while I'm usually conservative with recommending big expensive public transit projects, extending the MAX into Vancouver is SO necessary. The C-Tran buses sitting on the bridge in traffic with the rest of rush hour aren't helping anybody.
@bocahdongo77694 жыл бұрын
@@JETZcorp Is the driver good enough to obey the Lane Mathematic? I mean, lane matematic require super aware driver to consider which lane they should use and the driver itself should totally obey with literally unwritten law of traffic direction In City Skyline everything is controlled by computer, but IRL, we are just human that accidentially choose leftest lane when doing right turn
@JETZcorp4 жыл бұрын
@@bocahdongo7769 The biggest area where the lane mathematics are important and needed in Portland, are the on-ramps. A lot of our bottlenecks are caused by ramp lanes merging with each other or with existing highway lanes. Portland drivers are more orderly at merging than most, usually zipper-merging on their own, but they are cautious and do it slowly. So it's common to see high speed traffic come to a halt, bunch up behind a merge point, then drag-race away once everyone has their lane. The most common thing this does is severely back up the on-ramps, which then gridlock the rest of the city as people get in the 2-mile waiting line. Better lane mathematics mean more instances where the on-ramp traffic can simply continue without forcing a bunch of merging all in one spot. With regards to what you're saying though, there is at least one pretty notable section where "no lane switching" is in effect for a decent distance leading up to a 3-way split, where 2 of the 3 options are wildly more congested than the middle. Occasionally someone will cut in line through the middle, but it's usually someone with out-of-State plates and they have one hell of a time getting anyone to let them back in line. It's not exactly Japan, but drivers here will play ball better than most.
@edwardmiessner65023 жыл бұрын
@@bocahdongo7769 you're right about lane mathematics --- Cities Skyline's algorithm is apparently modelled after European driving habits while American drivers tend to drive in the center or left lane below the speed limit or weave all over the road and make an exit dive at the last second. Highway police officers tend to do this to so whenever one of them stops us, we're angry that the traffic rules are enforced on us.
@bocahdongo77693 жыл бұрын
@@edwardmiessner6502 Not specifically which country are modelled actually. Since CS vanilla's traffic algorithm is as crap as you can imagine. They only manageable because despawn exist. In order to use lane matemathic, you still need Traffic Manager mod (a.k.a make some absolute law of good driving) or else it's useless.
@B3Band5 жыл бұрын
The game shouldn't force drivers to be obedient. Any sane driver who sees two completely empty lanes with 2 miles to go before their exit would take the damn extra lanes and merge later.
@mariokart63095 жыл бұрын
That would be difficult to program and also defeat the point of a lot of the micromanaging tools in the game if drivers would just ignore them.
@swapode5 жыл бұрын
I think the problem usually isn't so much obidience but a general tendency to needlessly ignore lanes. Like highways with no special rules having traffic stopped for miles on a single lane. Still probably somewhat difficult to fix since you probably can't spend many cpu cycles on each car.
@IDSKoT5 жыл бұрын
I do wish there were some way of drivers to prioritize lanes based on how many people are in them. Because very frequently if someone is turning right, and there's a right only lane and a straight / right lane, they'll stay in the straight/right lane even though there's a queue for it... and the right-only lane is wide opened, or only has a small percentage of the drivers.
@SianaGearz5 жыл бұрын
I think the game computes important routes including lane switching using a search algorithm, and then it can just reuse the routes for a bunch of cars that are spawned; or simply memoizes route fragments and then reuses them between cars so that each spawned car only needs to compute a short fragment of a route. This strategy is remarkable because it's highly asynchronous, the game won't just stop or slow down every simulation timestep to figure out where the cars need to go. Attempts to give drivers individual lane switching AI via mods have been made, but haven't been technically very successful, as in extreme CPU overhead. Maybe a fix would be a cost-management function for the route calculation that would take into account that congested routes are slow and would make them seem longer to the planner. Also to the extent that there is memoization, maybe count how often a particular route has been used and on a timer, regularly kick the hottest route out of the cache and force its recalculation, which would then re-route it to a lower congestion alternative. It still wouldn't be entirely realistic, but single-lane traffic jams would at least resolve themselves in bursts. As if people were listening to a radio which would periodically tell them "please dont go there, there's a massive jam" so they pile up on another route for a while. To make the presented modification less reactive and seem more predictive and cause less pile up, it might make sense rather than taking congestion from the simulation as it's running, to calculate an estimate from running routes in-flight that have already been scheduled but not necessarily executed.
@AAGEnzee5 жыл бұрын
Yea, and the OPTIMAL way to drive (in real life) is for drivers to do exactly that, merge at the last possible moment. But, for some reason (at least here in America) we think that's 'rude'. If you try to skip a huge backup of cars by driving up half a mile on a clear road, people tend to not let you in when you get up there, which then makes the whole problem worse.

@@x-man7356Sure. If you have 3 lanes leading up to an offramp, then it would make sense to change to a 2 lane straight after the offramp (1 lane to enter offramp, 2 lanes to carry on straight). Same with the following onramp. Straight after the onramp you change to 3 lanes againb (2 lanes to carry on straight, 1 lane to enter). If you increase the size of the highway before the offramp, you are increasing the number of cars entering that section of highway (even though some are still leaving via the offramp), ther highway goes back to 3 lane between of off/onramps, then increasing again after the onramp to 4 lanes (increased number of cars from before + cars from onramp) and then back to 3 lane. That is called bottlenecking

Of course there are! Just like in real life. Imagine an intersection with two 4-lane roads connecting. One is the main road with priority and more cars, the other is the sub road. It being a sub road doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't a lot of people using it. If you use give way signs, cars in the sub road just won't be able to move because there always will be a massive amount of oncoming traffic on the main road. Here's where traffic lights come in handy. Waiting time on the main road should always be lower than on the sub road.

I found that roundabout lane assignment mess to be really effective when done correctly. One or two lanes end up wrong every other time (I then find my buses going to the other island to turn around), but it allows cars to use all available lanes much more effectively. Ofc I wouldn't need that if I went back to fix the general layout, but that's a different issue altogether

Some people just wanna micromanage to much, and while that would be fine, if the simulation was complex enough, it isn't. You start micromanaging too much and the whole game just breaks down. I really hope one of the expansions in 2019, is a traffic expansion, that focuses on the AI, Simulation and gives us more build in options of handling traffic. Like i want the AI to understand how a roundabout work. because in real life, its one of the most efficient ways to handle traffic, if the cars actually understand it and use the lanes like their supposed to..

the city was saved thanks to you. but those metro crossovers are not really effective cuz I think they could have a sterling job if those crossover lines stretched in perpendicular to your loop metro line.

I have to say that this city is beautiful. Usually they come with simple blocks and 90 degree corners everywhere, but this one uses a lot of curved roads and from high above it almost looks like leefs.

I would have done the metro slightly differently. Instead of the 3 loops connected by many short lines, i'd have the 3 small island loops connected by one large loop crossing the 3 islands. That way people don't have to change trains 4-5 times if they want to get from the bottom island to the top. You can then take the small loop, get to the change station, change to the large loop, continue to the change station on the destination island, and change again to a small loop train. This way, people only need to change trains a maximum of 3 times, no matter where in the city they are going. Same works for trains, busses and combinations of puublic transport. Always have large long distance lines with few stops, connecting larger neigbourhoods/areas of your city, and then connect these "central stations" to local loops that service the neighbourhoods locally. Hierachy of public transport works wonders!

highway 3 lanes, main roads 2 lanes, side street 1 lane. you don't need 4 lanes ( unless you have cars going both off the left side and right side of the road, but if there is no exit to the left you don't need 4 lanes, an example of this is I290 out of chicago where there are some exits on left and others on right side to spread the traffic across all lanes.

7:20 was a 5pm toilet tsunami. 5pm everyone had their dinner and took a crap. All the sewage output caused a shift in the water level which spawned a tsunami. I had one city that would experiance that all the time until I built a seawall and then a damn.

Every time I see a malfunctioning city my first guess is "there's no public transport". Even with awful roads and junctions, all your problems can be solved with public transport. As I see it, C:S is just Cities In Motion 3. I don't recall ever having traffic problems in my cities.

Gotta love how in Cities:Skylines 33k inhabitant cities require highways and massive junctions, a metro and already have skyscrapers. In the real world (in most parts), a 33k inhabitant city probably doesn't have more than 1-2 boulevards with more than 2 lanes per direction and would be lucky to have 1-2 bus lines servicing the city's public transportation, lol
