You're naturally gifted at explaining things. It's all "clicking" now lol. Making sense. No one really explained this to me before. It can get pretty complex and confusing when as lay people we try to look this stuff up. Honestly, your videos are tremendously helpful. I highly recommend your channel to others. I have learned more in the time watching your videos than in the years dealing with TMJD issues.

thank you for explaining this, this is exactly what I've been trying to tell my doctors. I'm 21 years old, developed TMJ/TMD symptoms 2 years ago progressively got worse, seen so many doctors , wear a mouthguard, physical therapy (3 different PT's), even arthrocentesis. I have left TMJ displacement with reduction and right TMJ displacement without reduction. The most painful thing I've gone through, affected my career/singing and painful clicking / muscles. The right unlocked once randomly and felt so much relief like blood rushing, then it got stuck again for 6 months. I even gone to orofacial clinic at ucla, but all they say is that the pseudodisc will form overtime and we have to manage symptoms for now. However it's been 2 years and the mouthguard / PT is not helping at all. Restriced motion, it got a little better since I've been doing PT twice a week for almost 2 months now, and PT tells me it's getting better but I allways tell him just because I can open a little wider does not mean its better since its SEVERLY painful to be opening wide let alone do my jaw stretches. Even the clicking hurts. It's honestly the worst thing I've ever gone through and waiting to see what my doctors are planning to do, if anyone has any advice please let me know! I just wanna get back to the old me/happy/painfree/positive me !

i got diagnosed w tmj over 2 years ago during covid. (fall 2020) i did virtual school so i rested my hand on my left jaw everyday. my jaw started locking one night and i was scared bc i didn’t know what it was. i got diagnosed with tmj. the locking stop and it turned into clicking. in april of 2021 i went to a physical therapist once a week for about a month or two but had to stop because it was $100 a visit and it was getting to be to much. fast forward to this year. the end of February i finally got Invisalign. it’s only made things worse. It’s made the pain worse and I clench every second of everyday. During august of this year I went back to physical therapy because the pain got even worse and i went for like 1-2 months again but had to stop because it wasn’t helping and it was too much money once again. because i put my hand on my jaw , it shifted my jaw causing asymmetry. that’s caused me to be super insecure so i isolate myself. i don’t go out, haven’t hung out with a friend in about a year in a half (not exaggerating) i’m severely depressed because i isolate myself and i have so much pain. everytime i smile, laugh, cry, eat, etc it just hurts. i don’t know what to do anymore i hate living like this

My cousin used to make fun of me because my face would go into spasms and they laughed at the “funny faces” I would make. LOL! That’s stood out to me for years. THis was VERY good info. Have been having my jow popping for a year or 10 now and it started locking up about 5 years ago. After a lot of stuff trying to find out what happened and going through therapy, it didn't solve anything. What would mostly happen and still happens if I am not careful to this day is when I apply to much pressure or bite to much on something that force my jaw to go left or right. So what i would usually feel when it starts is a tension and fatigue of mostly one side of the jaw. Eventually it can, but often won't, move to both sides. Then if I don't watch out it will eventually lock and it can take a day to 5 days to solve itself. It only hurst when it is locked and it pops open again. and when I then keep opening and closing with pops. I don't suffer any symptoms like headaches or muscle pain at all. What I found was the issue for me, was a pillow I slept on. I was a big stomach sleeper and I generally like harder pillows. When trying to find out why it was happening to me I tried sleeping on my sides and after that and watching out where my jaw was when sleeping, the locking and popping get WAAAAAY less. just when I am not feeling well it might happen but hasn't locked since. So anyone who suffers this, check how you sleep and if it forces your jaw to one side of your head. That seemed to have caused it or enhanced the issue for me. But great video and finally understand WHAT exactly happens.

@@noelavalos2558 no not at all. It is even more of the same. whenever I sleep on by stomach or just rest my head on my jaw (like laying with your face into the pillow and looking straight ) for extended periods, I do get issues. Every now and then when I force the jaw to much with some foods it might also start locking up. But overall as long as I don't force my jaw to much there is no issues. Haven't had my jaw lock up in years, just the occasional pops and clicks but nothing else. Sometimes its a bit worse then other times but I would say it may happen generally once or twice in 3 or 4 months periods so nothing really to worry myself over :)

@Controvi Жыл бұрын
@@noelavalos2558 I can imagine being scared for that. For me, I went to a physician who massaged the jam when it was stuck. But after it not working at all I quit and tried finding out for myself what was going on. I was reminded that after moving to a new house i got a new bed with a new pillow. I also sometimes have the habit of biting my nails. (i know i shouldn't XD ) What I did to test things was lay differently in bed. Normally I would sleep on my stomach but now I would sleep on my side. At first it didn't help until I noticed that my jaw was pushed to the left or right when laying on the respective sides. So what I did was move my hand underneath my pillow and cause a small opening to appear under my jaw. NOW, I need to tell you this, I am a steady sleeper. I can fall asleep on my right side and wake up there as well. I can literally stay in one position all night. I am lucky to be able to do that so I don't really have any issues anymore. Just sometimes when my mustache gets to long I tent to fiddle with the hears hanging over my lip. This puts strain on my jaw again and I would sometimes get the popping again. But that is the only thing I did. Like I said, It's not that I don't have any issues anymore but by just sleeping on the sides and with my skill of staying in one position, it helped my not locking up my jaw in years now. Just the occasional popping/cracking. Sorry I don't heave any other practical options for you to test out. I just count my self lucky in some regards to be able to not get myself in the situation to lock my jaw anymore. On the topic of food, I still eat everything I normally do. Even though I'm now on Intermitted fasting which amounts to generally a 4/20 schedule (not by choice but accident XD), I everything hard is still eaten. I have no issue doing that.

I’ve had a history of clicking/popping and have had only 1 locked episode a few years ago that’l lasted for about two weeks, in which I rested the jaw completely until it resolved on its own. About 2 months ago, the clicking/popping returned and I thought it may have had to do with sleeping with earplugs in, since it started shortly after I began doing that. More recently, after about a couple weeks of having a clicking jaw, I had another locked episode. It’s been about a month and hasn’t healed. My range of opening motion has improved, but I feel I may have simply just pushed the condyle to force this increase. I feel a grinding sensation on my left side when I move the jaw, and feel pain in the area. When I open my mouth, it appears I have a deviated opening pattern favoring the non-affected side, and my bite does feel “off.” No more popping/clicking but occasionally I feel ringing in my left ear near the TMJ. Seems like I’ve got disc displacement without reduction exactly as you spoke about in the video. Do you think it is a possibility that I could have pushed the condyle to increase my range of motion through straining the locked jaw to open? If so, has this made my situation worse? I am a college-age male and will seek treatment with my dentist in the coming months. Thank you for being so informative!

An MRI is simply a reflection of how your jaw was when the MRI was taken. So if you had a normal range of motion and no clicking/popping when the MRI was taken, then it will likely show that there is not an issue.

Hello Doc! I’m 15 and my jaw has been recently locking and worrying me. Apologies for the long comment in advance. Two months ago, my jaw locked out of the blue (no popping/click beforehand) and I forced it open. I did it to get it back in function immediately, as I was scared, but I know (now) that was a wrong move. One month ago, my jaw locked again. The next week, again and then continuous locking and unlocking for about three days after. The week after my jaw had unlocked, it began clicking. To get to the bottom of it, I saw a professional. I don’t think he was exactly a TMJ specialist, but he’s a dentist who works with wisdom teeth and has knowledge on TMJ. He said I was just growing and that there was no wear and tear on my bones. Two weeks passed without clicking, etc. and today it’s locked again. I understand you can’t give me a reason why, since we’re on the internet. So, my question is: should I revisit to get some more help/another evaluation (and maybe a mouth guard?) or let it be?

I’m confused. It was locking and getting worse and worse. Then while at the doc, he said me being able to open wide while locked was a bad sign. After I left that day (a week ago) my jaw pretty much stopped locking. BUT, now my bite is really off. NO LOCKING OR POPPING but my jaw feels “off” on that side and my teeth don’t match up. However, I did get a slight open bite due to my tmj. And the one symptom I have is have trouble talking because my muscles get tired. Also when I move my mouth from side to side, my right side is more restricted than my left. How would I prevent this speaking issue?

@krtdk Жыл бұрын
I have almost exactly the same case. If you hear the clicking and your mouth opens, don't worry there's no lock, it's disc displacement with reduction. The restriction on the one side is normal, it means just one TMJ is dysfunctioning. My disc is displaced on the right side, so the movement is restricted on the left, bc you need the opposide TMJ to work. I also got an open bite, my jaw just randomly moved some mm forward, and my teeth now don't fit properly. My TMJ specialist told me that this could be due to hyperplasia of the coronoid process (I think that's how it's called), and it may need a small surgery to make the teeth fit toghether. We found it my doing an MRI. I also have the muscular issue, it's connected to the TMJ issue, right now I'm wearing a custom made mouth orthotic, doing TENS and custmized "exercises" to replace the disc. Hope I helped, please get this treated ASAP!

Hello! Can you please help me with a decision to be made? Just yesterday I was at the clinic as my disc was out of place without reduction (I have a history of clicking noises and am now 23years old). The doctor put my disc back in place and a short while there was no more the severe pain I had. But once driving back home, the pain got horrendous and it's now the next day. The pain got far less but my jaw on this side still hurts medium pain and it feels so unstable. Does that mean, my disc is again out of it's place or is it the healing process? Do I need to get back to the clinic to get it back into place, if it's out again? I don't know what to do as I've got quite some month of jaw problems behind me, where one month ago my jaw bone on the very same side had been slightly out of it's place... Please, could you help me? I'm absolutely clueless what to do.... Thank you! (I'm in Europe)

It might be worth talking with your doctor about prolotherapy or platelet rich plasma injections for the TMJ ligaments. I have a connective tissue disorder that causes my ligaments to get easily injured and weak. When that happens my muscles take on the excess burden. But muscles get fatigued and spasm. The spasm pulls my bones out of place. Similarly, the muscles attached to the TMJ discs can spasm and pull the disc with them when they contract. Simple things to try are lightly massaging inside your mouth with your fingers, pressing a warm compress to your face, and holding warm water in your mouth. This could help relax your muscles. I’ve found PRP injections helpful because my muscles won’t relax until my ligament injuries are addressed. I’m not a doctor and none of this should be taken as medical advice. Just something that might be worth exploring with your care team.

Hi Priya. I have had jaw problems ever since I was young and I used to get a lot of pain. The last couple years the pain has basically gone away, but I believe this is because it has actually gotten worse and I am passed the pain stage. I am now 18 and I have difficulty controlling the right side of my Jaw when talking, eating, etc. When I put my fingers on the condyle(bone that moves down when you open your jaw I believe) the right side is almost non existent. You can feel it move slightly, but it's nothing like the left side where you really feel the knob. Is this tmj without reduction or could it be a partial jaw dislocation that I have been living with for a few years? The second option doesent seem likely to me, but I don't have any other explanation as to why the actual bone/condyle isn't as prominent on the right side? Any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

Now they want to X ray it first(because thats the standard policy for everything), but I don't know if this would be helpful or not. It would make more sense to me if they referred me to some sort of specialist in TMJ, and then from there they order the correct scans. Like you said, maybe I have to find a dentist near me who has training in TMJ problems. In your experience with patients with TMJ, do they have this problem with the condyle not feeling as prominent on one side?

I can also move my jaw joint on my right side(which makes a sort of pop) just by applying light pressure sideways with my hand. It's almost like the jaw has dropped and I'm pushing it back up, but it doesn't stay there. I can make my jaw pop in about 4 different ways on the right side. Also cant open my mouth very wide( but its not locked). Last bit of information Is that this is probally connected to Ellors Dandrone syndrome, or a form of it that I have had since I was young. For example I used to be able to pop my left shoulder in and out( but thankfully it hasn't tightened up and It hasn't done this for years), and I have very flexible joints. I know this is a lot of information and it's hard to know for sure without examining it and taking scans. Just wanted to get your thoughts! Thanks.

Now I get no pain at all, but every time I close my mouth within the final few cm's its pops. It never pops on opening - is this with reduction?
