I tried this technique with the qtip....no go !!! Thanks Jason for showing me the way...just got a new Watt totally grey....what to do??? I found this on Bobby's channel and wow....I am inspired...just put 30 mins or less into making the grey disc ready for some character with a little black line action.....the glue is drying and i can see my patterns...i tried the spider web center but did not go the way I tried....it's actually cool....looks like a caterpillar spiral !

Wow I’m so inspired to try this. What are you using to make your dyes or are they straight from the packaging?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt 11 ай бұрын
That's awesome, you're in the right place then Opal. There are a few different options for dyes that come in powder form or premixed. He's mostly using Pro Chemical & Dye mixed with acetone here. We have a video breaking down all of the dyes and dye mixes here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZeYYmpqj56Unqc if you want to check it out.

Yo a lil' late to the party but a rookie question, what is the "paint" its some sort of dye mixed with, denatured alcohol (?) or what?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt Ай бұрын
All good, sorry for being a little late on the response too. He's using dye (not paint), specifically poly dyes that will penetrate the plastic. iDye Poly, Spike-It Worm Dip, and Pro Chemical & Dye are probably the most popular.

So I have some experience in these types of dyes. However, where I struggle is getting the dye to hit all spots between the glue. I use a q-tip but it seems I get a more spotty result. Any advice? Love the work you do!
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt Жыл бұрын
Hey now John! Best advice I have is pretty straight forward, more coats with more dye in the q-tip. For what it's worth, I've found that all q-tips aren't equal. Might try experimenting with different brands and shapes as well. Good luck bud!

Did you mention what kind of dye you are using? Mix ratio?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt

Pretty sure he's using Pro Chemical & Dye mixed with some acetone. My ratio is about 1/4 tsp of powder to 4 oz of acetone. Hope that helps bud!

Let the first layer of dye dry overnight but rinse off the second right away???
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt Жыл бұрын
The dye is good to go right away after it's applied. You can always give it a soapy cold water rinsing right after applying it to wash any residual off the surface, but that's not what's happening here. What's drying overnight with that first layer is the glue. Then the next day, after applying more dye over the dried glue mask the glue is all rinsed right off. Hope that helps clear it up. Don't be afraid to shoot me a DM if you still have questions.

Do you do any wiping or "curing" of the disc after you're done to prevent bleed or transfer?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt 2 жыл бұрын
Just a soapy cold water rinse to get any residual dye that might still be on the surface off. Otherwise, it's part of the plastic as soon as you're done and set to jet.

May be a dumb question but what turntable do you all use? I have a record player but getting that thing to center discs is horrible.
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt 2 жыл бұрын
No dumb questions around here T-Rex. I use an old Technics turntable I tinkered back into a second life. If you're looking for a new one, a direct drive motor (vs belt driven) works better for our purposes. Best places I've found to dig one up have been Craigslist or FB Marketplace. Hope that helps bud!

He says that he washes the dried glue off the disc . . . is that a water thing? is he peeling dried glue. What is best method for removing dried glue from disc?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt 2 жыл бұрын
Either or really, just as long as you get all of the glue off before moving on to the next stage. Warm water and a sponge has worked best for me.

Can I ask what dye your using?
@TheDifferenceisDoingIt
