In this series we will be reading through the Psalms one by one and pointing out cool stuff along the way. The goal is to help get the Psalms into our theological landscape so that they help form our outlook as they have done for God's people for nearly 3,000 years.

Thanks for all these Psalm studies, JM! But.... I'm especially looking forward to your study of Psalm 12. And get ready for some push back from the KJV-only-ists out there when you show how they've misunderstood what it's all about!

Kind of interesting to read that the one who loves "hamas" His soul hates. ;-)

Man you went full Bible nerd on the snare/coal thing. Actually pretty cool, but way too deep for me. The cup thing I knew about, a little. I want to ask, you start in the NIV, I guess I wasn't really paying attention to that before. I read the NASB when I believed in the early 80s and my church vilified the NIV. I just found a nice hardback copy of the NIV at the Goodwill for $1.93 and was reading a little of Acts in it the other day. It seems fine, a little bland, but ok. I know as a scholar you use all sorts of translations and the original texts as well. Is the NIV your go to? Is that what you use in church? I have been watching your channel a while now and it seems like I should know this.

I default to NIV because it is the most popular modern translation, so most people in churches are likely using it. It's also the translation that my Archaeological Study Bible is in, so that's what I read from as a base text. But it misses things at times, so I have various corrections and original language notes written in my Bible for when I'm teaching away from my computer.

@@DiscipleDojo How do you think it stacks up against other translations? I like the New English Bible for just reading, not studying. I also use the NRSV, I like that too. Literary people my age know a lot of the King Jimmy, and it pops up all the time in literature. NASB is chunky, not pretty. I think I like the NRSV the best all around. I read a lot in the HCSB on my kindle too, I like that as well.

You mentioned that the heart and mind distinction was read back "into the Scriptures", but doesn't Jesus make such a distinction in Matthew 22:37 (Love the Lord your God with....)? Or are you saying how we think of the heart and mind is now different?
@DiscipleDojo

Yes, in the Hebrew Bible there wasn't a distinction between heart and mind. Later Greco-Roman culture likely introduced the distinction so that by the time of Jesus there was a need to specify *both* heart and mind to indicate what the original Shema just used "lev" to refer to.

@@DiscipleDojo Thanks. I did notice you mentioned the Hebrew Bible in your talk, which leave out the distinction, but then mentioned Scriptures, so I was unsure. Thanks for the clarification, and the great ministry!
