I am loving these podcasts! I was never grounded because my mom always said “If I am mad at you, I don’t want you stuck in the house with me.” 😂 I am sure this is only one reason for not grounding but it always cracked me up. You guys are such great parents!

I love how you guys talked about making sure you praise your kids. I have been making a really big effort to tell my son when I am proud of him and why and I've noticed it's started working because he has now started to tell ME that he's proud of me lol. It's so dang cute. He just lights up when I make sure to single him out and tell him how proud I am of how well behaved he was at a party or at the store for example.

I am way older than you both but I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts. You gave a lot to think about. I enjoyed hearing what you both learned from your parents growing up. Ellie, I adore your parents, especially your mom. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother and I am grateful for the influence my mom has had and still has in my life. I don't mean this to sound disrespectful to my mom at all but your mom is the kind of "older" woman that I would love to walk alongside me in life as an encourager/mentor. She seems so genuine and precious and so full of wisdom. Ellie and Jared, you both are doing a great job with your family. You both have learned from great parents! ❤

Family as in your siblings and parents. Can't wait to get the cookbook! God bless!

It's such a sensitive subject to discuss. I enjoy that you guys go in depth and I fully agree with communication. I was never grounded or spanked and I think that's what really helped us grow up to be the way we are. My mom would sit us down and communicate why it was that way. I feel like our children should never be afraid of us, but more use us to guide them.

Thank you Ellie and Jared for this podcast! Although I disagree with a lot of the ways you were disciplined as children, I still find your views interesting. I especially love what your dad did Ellie when all of you would be there when one of you was in trouble. In my opinion, taking a deep breath and removing yourself from the situation for a minute for example when your kids do not listen is probably the best thing to do. Because as Jared said, you cannot be rational when you're upset. I am totally against swearing, spanking or using any other form of violence as a disciplinary method. But I know that parenting is hard and that disciplining your kids is even harder.

I love these podcasts! I listen and then watch when you post them. I love your take on discipline and parenting in general. I think everyone takes things from their childhood and changes some parts and keep others. I have a very similar take to you both, except I never considered not grounding my kids someday when they are older. I got grounded a handful of times but I actually really liked your view on it. Made me re think or think at all about it I guess. Thank you!

I would love it if you guys talked a bit about your religion. In sweden where i live mormons are very rare and I would love it if you could explain a bit about it and how you apply it into your daily lives. What does it mean to you, do you guys have cetrain "rules" you live by? All I know is when my cousin got married to a mormon man her mother (who wasnt mormon) couldnt be a part of the ceremony in the church.

thinking corners are a great technique for me and my little one. Mainly used when theres back talk or when they just need to calm down. We hug a lot too, i think that's important. Also one major thing, my son went through a phase of saying 'you're stinky' which is normal for a 3 year old, but saying it to his senior elders is a big no no out of respect, so I taught him to say 'you're beautiful' and i personally think thats moulded his character into a caring individual.

Love these so much!! Also really love your hat Ellie! ♥️ I really enjoy your method of parenting, I try to be this way as well because of how I was raised. Communication is so important even for kids and I feel like a lot of parents don’t understand that or some feel as though they shouldn’t have to explain to their children. Which is sad because children are good at understanding if you can communicate with them properly.

I use to get beat with a stick. Which it was painful and if I cried I got hit again. One time it was 27 times😒 I wish I was kidding. Anyway I’m going to learn from my mother and not do that for my future children. I’m not having kids for at least 6 years, at least that’s what I want but this information is really helpful and I never thought of some of this stuff. I just hope I’m half the parents they are. I’m really learning a lot.

My sister and I used to get grounded or we would get a slap from a wooden spoon ( the Irish moms answer to discipline), which looking back was funny because when you saw the wooden spoon come out you knew you were in bother, but it did put manners on us so it was effective!!

We used to get the wooden spoon, vaccum cleaner pipe, fish slice. The joys of being a New Zealand kid in the 80s. All it taught me was to not get caught. And my brother has been in and out of trouble with the law since he was a kid, so definitely didn't work on us.

You might need to reevaluate bedtime if the kids are still wide awake 2 hours after they go to bed. Not just what time they go to bed, but their routine before bed. If it really important to you that they continue to go to bed at 7:30, maybe allow them to play in their room until 8 or 8:30 and then they to go to bed and have to stay in bed.

One time my aunt caught me kissing my cousin and she was very upset because we were 5 years old and both girls. She told my mom and my mom took me outside and asked me why and where I learned that. And I said I learned it on tv from my grandparents and then I didn’t even know why I did it or that it was even wrong. But now I am definitely not attracted to females and this podcast just made me think of that story. Me and my aunt still kind of have an awkward relationship. Now I am 13 and am very interested in podcasts and love your channel😘

Thank you Ellie and Jared for this podcast that you have posted. I don't believe in the whole grounding thing either. I would say I would do agree with how you do things, unfortunately I don't have any living children but when I plan to have more hopefully are able to take home a healthy baby. when that time of disciplining comes I would most definitely try your way and pray it works for me. I'm definitely taking notes so thank you so much.

My son is only 6 months old, so we're not at the discipline stage yet. But but as you've said you do, my husband and I are always discussing how we would handle different scenarios. Growing up my siblings and I were never grounded but if we were mean to one another we have to do what my mom referred to as humble days. Basically if I was mean to my brother, I would have to do all of my chores and his for a day. ...it was very effective for a while, and then it ended in all of us telling on each other far more than necessary in a constant effort to get out of doing our own chores for a day! Lol

I have been so frustrated with my almost 3 year old because he just doesnt listen sometimes. It's mainly the fact he throws things when he gets angry. We have tried getting on his level, we have tried time out, we have tried taking things away, we have tried ignoring, but nothing works. We have given him grace because I had our daughter 1 month ago and know that's a big change but we just cant have him throwing things.

My husband and I definitely realized growing up that there are things that our parents did that we don’t do with our kids. We have an 8 year old and a 6 year old and disciple is hard but it’s so important. Our kids both have huge attitudes and one day my son blurted out of anger to his sister that he hated her. My husband and I both feel that hate is like a swear word and I put a bar of soap in my sons mouth. He has never done it again.

You put an actual poison in your baby's mouth? A poison that states on its packaging 'not for human consumption' and 'Consult medical professionals if consumed'? He will always remember the day that you forced a chemical into his body against his will. Trust me.

Oh and you both are very lucky to have such sweet kids cause my babygirl does not listen to anything I say... She knows what to do but she just does not want to do it and I think part of that is because she knows that she always has my mom to be the grandma that allows her to do whatever and there is nothing I can really do cause we live with her and she is always excusing her... Its so frustating to see my own mom ignoring my requests and always do or give her or excusing her of everything when I am trying to educate and disciplin her... :( you really have no idea the luck you have for having the family you do, from parents and sis/bros to each other and your kids... Love watching you guys...keep on inspiring me :) Kisses

Start early and be consistent! If you start when they are 10 or something, it will take way longer to accomplish. They won’t want to change and will put up a bigger fight to get what they want. It will be hell on both of you. Also if you say you’re gonna give them a time out/spank/whatever- do it! Stand by your word! If you don’t, they will know it and they will learn that they can get away with things, so they don’t have to listen. If they know you will follow through with your threat, they will be way more apt to tread lightly and listen. If you discipline at home, they will listen in public. If you don’t discipline at home, but try to while you are out of the house, the kids know you won’t do anything about it, so they won’t listen. Then all hell breaks loose. BE THEIR PARENT - NOT THEIR FRIEND!!

Food for thought - do you think the downside of explaining every command gives them the room to argue back/give a counter argument to your reason for a command? Do you think their’s ultimately a point when your children should just obey out of respect for your authority as parents?
