Disco 2 Sealing and Sidestep Removal!

Still chasing that elusive leak into the drivers footwell, and, for a laugh, took the passenger sidestep off . . . !

I'm quite jealous of your side-steps. Mine have been on my "to do" list for over a year but, on the facelift disco', they're a huge moulding that seems to incorporate the step, the sill-trim and the front mudflap all in one lump. Every time I look at them I find more and more rusty screws and bolts attaching them to the car, many of which seem to be fitted into recesses in the plastic. I suspect removing them is going to require an angle-grinder rather than any other tools, and the plastic covers are unlikely to survive the process. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll probably replace the sidesteps with some kind of after-market rock-sliders and then I'll buy another pair of rear mudflaps and butcher them to make them fit behind the front wheels... somehow. Missus probably isn't going to be happy cos, as you say, the side-steps DO make it easier to get in and out. I won't miss them myself, though, cos I haven't wanted to risk standing on the driver's side one for over a year.

Yes, I'm afraid it's age over style. Steps are necessary now. Didn't know there was such a difference between facelift and not! I was not looking forward to the job either, but in the end, it was easy, the bolts sheared off, and the mudflap end had a new bolt in due to being removed for the welding! Job done!

I have a puddle on the drivers side, so cut the carpet out like you did so I could investigate. No water coming from above at all. Looks like it was the rubber door seal, it had shrunk so the corners were not tight into the door frame. Replaced it with one I had kicking arouund and so far its dry. I'll be uploading a video soon on it.

Nice! An easy fix, we like that! Unfortunately, my water is coming from the top. I can see it on the bulkhead. It'll be holed like the passenger side. Until I can afford to get it done properly, I'll have to work around it. Maurice has done a vid on another water entry point, the door check strap . . . !

I remember my side steps been exactly the same. Ended up grinding them off. It was a good excuse to splash out on some nice hefty tree sliders instead lol. Great video as always, hope you get to the bottom of the leak.👍

Hello Derek, hope you are well, enjoy your Father´s day. F D is a different time of the year here in Australia, we have already had Mother´s day. At 73 I am not able to do much under the LR these days, but I have a friend who has a hoist, so up it goes. Was underneath a couple of oil changes ago, turned and something went crack in my back and I found myself stuck. Took me about 10 mins to work my way out. If my wife was within earshot, she could have grabbed my feet and pulled me out. Keep well.

I'm just in the process of uploading a video for you, thecleaking footwear, check the little rubber seal that goes around the check strap onto the a post, of its peeling off then water gets in there

A little bit of the old WD40 may have helped quite a bit on them old rusty nuts...

What size spanner and socket did you use to take the steps off

That is a good question. Largely irrelevant due to the fact that they nearly all sheared off. 13m seems familiar. They were so rusty it was whichever socket fitted the nearest and then tapped on!

My sidesteps are just for show, if anyone stepped on them, they'd bend or snap.
