Ok, and why is that such an impressive feat? Have we lowered our expectations and stadards to the point now, where a fairly new motor still lumbering on is some kind of marvel?? I mean what am I missing here ?? Most off road vehicles (except landy's and rangies) will piss a 500,000 mile inspection! )

The funniest part isn’t in the video - he did successfully drive to the top of the mountain. The only glitch was he flew home from there in a helicopter leaving the car up there to be driven back down. Only he forgot to leave the keys with the car and flew off with them in his pocket!

I remember when my dad used to have a 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE when I was 10 years old. Because my dad had the HSE specification it was pretty much loaded to the gills with all the bells and whistles, including but not limited to, tri-zone climate control, heated front & rear seats (which were upholstered in a really nice cream leather!), rear audio controls, you name it! It also had a DVD player as well, which I don’t think was fitted from the factory as it was actually a third-party Rosen unit, but it was a nice bonus. Plus, its air suspension meant it was a very comfortable and relaxing car to travel in too...

Land rovers - yes they have bad build quality, they are meant to be utilitarian vehicles, not luxury, besides over 70% of them are still on the road now - how many car makers can claim that 70% of their vehicles are still on the road even the ones from the late 1940s.

1:29 The 1999 Dodge Durango had a feature something like this but in addition to the 3rd row seats there was actually room in the rear for things when they were up, and the fold and tumble (that's the technical term) middle seats did all that with the flick of one lever. Pretty clever for a Yank Tank, as the Brits like to call our large American vehicles...

I don't see why people call this ugly. I think it looks rather chunky, utilitarian and functional. Even a little minimalist.

Funny how they brought that kid in the middle of nowhere for that 10second clip. Reminds me of Sienna Miller in the glovebox.

Anyone else notice that TG and the BBC upload like a Dave-edited version rather than the full on BBC versions?

Of course you are..... from the very first letter of the opening sentence it was clear. My 1953 Series 1 had a canvas "tilt" (canvas covering) from the top of the windscreen frame to level with the tailgate. The rear canvas panel was laced into place and one only had to lift up the rear canvas and toss the kid into the back with the dogs. The gas tank was under the driver's seat and it really did go anywhere. My last LR was a 2005 Range Rover and I spent more time in a rental car than it.

Anthony, The original was not called the Defender in the UK. The Series 1 was the first. I had a Series 2 "Safari" also (full roof rack and "12" seater - who were they kidding!) and used it as a rescue vehicle with the RNLI and drove it over the frozen sea at one point. Trivia - first Land Rover had the steering wheel in the center (1948 was the year I think).

Discos used to cost 27000? Now they start at 60000. Its a shame land rover went completely crazy with their prices.
