This is one of my favourite Top Gear challenges ever, as much as I love the bigger scale new stuff, there's something beautiful about this one. Just Clarkson driving up a mountain in a Land Rover, and it has such an impact. What really made it for me was using Jupiter on the soundtrack. Love this challenge so much.

Realizing that, it still has the air-ride suspension that I've seen give LR3/4's problems time after time. IMO swapng to actual steel springs helps in a "real" overland vehicle. Honestly my Diesel 4Runner would walk through this track like nothing, but it is, as usual, vry cool to see Jezza take this truck up to the top. Just wish he'd try out some better 4wd's instead of giving lip service to LR who have done nothing but lessen the OR capability of their trucks over the years IMO.

Electronically controlled transfer cases are brilliant, until the car is 5 years old. Then you'll be driving down the road and it will, for no reason at all, suddenly engage low range and rock-crawl mode. You'll have to have the thing towed to a land rover garage and pay them a lot of money to have them tell you that you spilled coffee on the console 4 years ago and you now need an entirely new electric gearbox controller. Sometimes a Lever to move a piece of steel is better.

Yes I know in the 99.9% of cases the need of "freedom" is only an excuse. But at least it's a consistent one. With an SUV you haven't got an excuse. What I'm trying to say is that an off-road like this doesn't disappoint even if the occasion to use it happens once in all its life. For example you are driving along with your 5yr old boy and drive past a mud field. And decide to drive through it, just to make the kid happy. Try that with an X6 and you'll hate it. Freedom in a very peculiar way

Lol I’ve seen a Land Rover go up hell’s gate which was straight up rocky canyons. Many people have died in other vehicles attempting and land rovers go up with ease(it does take an experienced driver) I’ve seen these vehicles go through mud like it’s nothing(you may have to put it in reverse and forward and repeat the process a few times) but I’ve seen these vehicles do the extraordinary. They completely surpass any Jeep(supped up or not, but ironically, the cherokee can go more than a wrangler) or Toyota, etc....

contrary to popular belief, Hummers aren't quite as good as they are made out to be. Don't get me wrong, the Hummer is one of the absolute best brands that you can buy for offroading, but there is competition. Jeep has a major role in the offroad bussiness. Jeep wranglers, because of thier center of gravity, lower than the Hummer's, and shorter wheel base, are a formidible opponent for the Hummer.

I like the Disco a lot. The new one just restyled is even better. These vehicles are much more useful than those pointless SUVs. You want a family car to get EVERYWHERE, full stop. And that cannot be done by a normal SW, even if it's got 4WD. An SUV is a less efficient, bigger and more expensive 4WD Station Wagon that can go 10 inches further in the mud before getting stuck. No actual reason to own one. Oh no sorry there's one. Hedonism

@MrTaneli123 I own a Discovery II and I don't see how your comment would make any sense at all, we Landy owners have pride on owning one of the best off road vehicles ever created and won't be jealous of the own blood brothers of our loved vehicles. Time changes and of course the Disco 4 has better things that the Disco 2, but in no way does it mean a Disco 2 is worthless since it's probably one of the best Landy ever built.

They're a bit better on gas than that; British cars can suck fuel down at a prodigious rate as well. But the fact is, any car would probably be stuck there. He's stuck in a peat bog. They're worse than mud. And it doesn't matter where a car is made; stuck is stuck. Though I'm sure it probably would have benefitted from fatter tires and a more experienced hill climber.

Rightio well I have driven multiple vehicles from both series, the landcruiser IS top heavy causing it to lean in turns and allows it to roll easily, The Landrover tops in at 1.7-9 tonne, it is heavier than the cruiser yet it does perform better on sand due to the weight being 50F50R where as the cruiser is 70F30R causing it do dig in to much and reducing grip at the rear, and sorry to burst your bubble but 4x4s are getting worse, these control systems are preventing a lot of the old tricks.

Don't get me wrong, vehicles like this have a purpose, just not for 99.9% of people. They are completely hedonistic!!!

Jeremy Clarkson doesn’t need to visit British Columbia for better mountains and Jeremy’s choice of mountain was probably just right. Not too small and not too big was sufficient to test this Land Rover, but if Jeremy wanted a bigger or more challenging mountain then Scotland has many alternative and more dangerous regions. Some good alternative places could be found in Glencoe, Cairngorms or parts of the Isle of Skye. At the end of the day we don’t want Jeremy Clarkson dead.

Yeah, that’s the odd thing, I see these cars everywhere on roads, but I bet that most of them would never think of driving off-road.
