As someone who’s only stationed in San Diego I couldn’t imagine living here once I get out of the military the cost of living is insane compared to my home state. It’s a shame though I’m from Dallas and San Diego is a 10x better city than Dallas, but the reality is that I wouldn’t be able to afford San Diego if it wasn’t for my housing allowance.

I was stationed out here and originally from Dallas as well.. I got out in 2013 and still live here.. The trick was buying my house in 2015.. My mortgage is still the same.. not these crazy prices I see out there now with the current market.

When I lived there over 35 years ago, I had to take public transportation which didn't go everywhere. The trolly's were good, but used some of them. I didn't used the coastal train. Once i got a car it was so much easier and quicker. I have heard about the traffic, gas prices, how good the school are, yet the cost of living is high. I have a friend who lives in La Mesa, which is more affordable, yet warmer in the Summer. Happy Holidays to you and Courtney and families.

Your observation about allowing you to merge on the freeway is spot on. California drivers for the most part are not rude. Yes you encounter them but not to the extent you would witness in other states.

Great overview of San Diego! I've been a resident since 1980 (since there was a MF-ing stoplight on the 15 at Balboa, forcing everyone on the freeway to stop for the light, if you can believe that). I live in Japan now but return home every summer, and enjoy my home city which is amazing.

I lived/worked in SD and North SD for over 20 years and the beaches are the best and the bigger waves than most beaches. But have retired up to Santa Barbara 12 years ago and don't miss the big city or the constant fast paced, always in a hurry lifestyle everywhere you go.

I lived in San Diego from 1983 to 2019. I spent 10 yrs commuting 25 miles to work. Took 45 min to 1 hr in stop and go traffic 1 way. That's 1.5 to 2 hrs each day in my car and working 12.5 hrs each shift. Mission Beach went from being great in the mid 1980's to being a ghetto in the mid 1990's. I moved out of San Diego in 2019 and returned to visit in 2022. Homeless encampments everywhere. Homeless drug addicts and mental ill wandering around on the sidewalks or unconscious from drugs. Waiting a stop lights... you get to watch the homeless pull down their pants and piss and/or poop on the sidewalks. You also get to ser the mentally ill running into to the streets and flap their arms and talking to imaginary people or bang on your vehicle windows trying to get into your vehicle. Skid row was once contained to downtown but moved everywhere... even in suburban areas.

Don’t sell the airport short. I travel weekly for work and I absolutely love our airport. 1. Direct flights to major hubs, like Houston, LAX, Newark, DC, etc.. 2. Small and quick security/customs lines. I’d much rather do the TSA thing here in SAN and take a connection in LA than deal with driving to LA then doing the TSA dance up there. 3. Volume of flights - there are plenty of options to get you where you need to be. 4. Food - let’s be clear, there are fewer options than the mall, but the quality is top notch for an airport. (Dave’s BBQ! PGA, Stone Brewing) 5. Airport parking - garage renovations almost complete will make it ample again. But uber is the way.

My preference is Coronado, Coronado Shores, while old many of the units through out the ten building complex are being renovated by newcomers. The downside, a lot of tourists next door at Hotel Coronado, North Island jet and helicopter noises and lastly, water pollution from Tijuana. Can't beat the weather however. Would not mind living in my unit full time but California income taxes are high.

@@BernMcGovern And a few short term renters in El Camino tower as well. HOA rules ignored. On another note, saw a hotel condo unit at the Del Coronado Shore house facing the street, 2 bed/2B with an asking price of $3.6 million. Insanity for a unit that you can't live in full time.

I get so mad at slow freeway merging and driving (merge at the speed of traffic, go the speed of traffic) Speed differences is far more dangerous than speeding

Cost of Living is a big factor. I know friends and relatives in other states who are thriving while we’re barely scraping by. But we got sun ☀️ (but who can get out and enjoy it?!)

Wow, where to begin? For public transportation, we have city busses and greyhound too, but most people take uber if they don't have their own vehicle. Bicycle lanes are the best in the country. If you don't like critters, stay away from the canyon neighborhoods; We have the biggest dog parks of any major city in the country; There is Hiking and Jeep trails everywhere here.;There are neighborhoods that are affordable, but have higher crime. Keep in mind you have much higher salaries here too. San Diego School district is out of control with forced vaccinations, Poway unified just had a teacher suspended for abuse of special needs kids and the district knew about it for 7 months and didn't say anything; We have some of the best beaches in the world, and Mission Beach isn't one of them. Check out La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove, Moonlight beach, Cardiff, Delmar, Solana Beach, et al.; Downtown Gaslamp district is great for younger adults. I was born and raised here for 60 years.

We do have direct flights to Japan at reasonable enough prices. Not having to go up to L.A. first is a huge plus for air travel 10+ hrs in duration. Also, the coyotes are currently out of control and it is not all due to human encroachment.

I did. Moved to sterling virginia from poway sd. bought a 2 story house 1931 sq for 591k with 4 beds 3 baths. 😆 best decision I've ever made.
