Great video. (Actually, all your instructional videos are pretty impressive, since they allow people to get things done in a very approachable manner.) Just one itty-bitty tiny little detail missing (either that or I'm too dumb to see it): the actual dimensions of the templates - for those that are printing-impaired or would just like to trace them directly on the metal sheet. Thanks again for all the great info you provide!

What if I were to make it with two cones between one grounded disk? Perhaps make one cone wide and another one more narrow to get both close- and long-range signal broadcasting. Or would one interfere with another?

I believe this antenna is similar to a high pass filter, where band stop and operation is where you tune and can go work on higher freq. I actually forgot my ham knowledge on antennas hehehe

may be a good idea to put dimensions on the template andrew

Hi! I love your experiments. But I’m struggling to understand what’s logic behind the cone angle and disc radius.

Do you have the measurements? I don't think the template is printing in the correct diameter. I have 55mm for the disk and about 75mm for the cone. Thanks!

Hi I have just printed it out it should be 80mm for the cone and 60mm for the disk. (diameter)

andrew mcneil Mine are slightly too small then. They do however seem to be performing well. Because it is a wide band antenna, I'm hoping the 5mm difference isn't making a large impact on how it should perform. Thank you for measuring it!

jamienoel Maybe the size is printer dependent. (margin or not, etc.) I'll check on my printer : Done. Mine shows 81 and almost 61

Yes I had the same printing problem . Image came out a feww mm smaller. Had to adjust measurments by eye lookinjg at andrews fingers as comparison. Not exact but my antenna performs great.

Andrew, I like your antenna videos. I looked but did not see a video on your equipment displayed next to you in the beginning of this video. I would be very interested in knowing what you use for analysis of your antennas at 2.4 GHz, i.e. signal source, field strength, SWR measurements, etc. Please keep up the good work.

hello, Thank you for the really detailed video. I'll do one of these for my wifi. Will it work for 3g 2100mhz too? or it will have to be different specs? I want to attach one of these on a usb 3g modem on a pole. USB modem and antenna will be inside a plastic housing on the pole and the connection to wireless router through usb cable around 10 meters. I would appreciate your feedback on this project. Thank you in advance

Please remake your PDF to include correct dimensions. It helps if you print so you can measure and know if you got them right. No reason not to include several based on different frequencies. Would be very helpful.

Hi,I'm new in antenna making, and I'm trying to order my material to build antennas, but as I didn't receive yet my Alfa AWUS036NHR WiFi, I was trying to figure out what coaxial cable connector I have to get. You say in the video it is female SMA connector, not RP SMA male connector. isn't it? I ask this question because it seems to me that Alfa WiFi has a female RP SMA connector, so it needs a RP SMA male connector to the antenna. Could you confirm? Otherwise, I'll have to wait two more weeks to receive my Alfa WiFi device before checking connector. Thanks.

It may be possible to make a good directional antenna. Mount the Discone at the focal point of a parabolic disk. So that the discone's 360° radiating pattern intercepts the circumference of parabolic dish at about a 45° angle.
@DavidLopez-bz4rj

Not possible, but it has been tried as you suggest. You need to understand RF theory to see why it wouldnt work.

You said to use "tin" rather than "aluminum" but how do you tell the difference? They both look shiny and silver. They look the same to me. I know we call cans "tin" cans (in the US anyway) but as far as i know they are not actually tin but aluminum or steel usually.
@markspc1
@markspc1 7 жыл бұрын
Linda Zambanini , tin is magnetic and aluminum is not. So if a magnet sticks to it it is tin. Also if it is aluminum you are not going to be able to solder it. Another test is that tin (some type of steel alloy) is 3 times heavier than aluminum or the same thickness.

how many degree u cut the circle to make a 60 degree cone?
@stevemacbr
@stevemacbr 5 жыл бұрын
@muhamad shareefudin - If you mean a cone which, from the BASE (left or right) inclines at 60 degrees,... then since the radius of the ORIGINAL cone will be the HYPOTENUSE of the finished cone,... the number of degrees you need from the full circle made = 180 degrees or HALF of the circle. Then, folding this half of the circle around for the - cut sides - or diameter to touch each other will give a CONE with a base measurement diameter, (left to right) the same measurement as the Hypotenuse or ORIGINAL radius of the original circle,... and when this cone is formed, the Vertical height, when it is pointing upward, will = ORIGINAL DRAWN radius value x 1.732 . Ex: Diameter = 160mm, Radius = 80mm (hypotenuse of finished cone) Cut circle in half - along the diameter. From the center point of the semi-circle, form/curve the ends, into the shape of the CONE, so that the edges of the diameter meet. This will provide a cone, with a SLOPE of 60 degrees, and length (hypotenuse) of Radius 80mm, a base of 80mm wide (circular) and a standing height of 40mm x 1.732 (sqroot of 3) = 69mm high vertically to the apex.

It works at 7dbi and is very broad band with a wide beamwidth so would work well for FPV it is omnidirectional so would be a ideal upgrade to a dipole

The way I remember it a discone has gain about the same as a halfwave dipole at best and really its closer to a 1/4wave GP Not what I would call High gain! Its real claim to fame is its bandwidth
