You hit the nail on the head. Years ago when my son was going to college, the 89 Aries he was driving needed to go through inspection and when he took it through it failed for emissions. So I went to the Chrysler dealership where I knew a mechanic and the parts guy. I asked Jay the parts guy for plugs, rotor, cap and wires and before he wrote up my ticket, John, the mechanic asked me what was up. After I told him that I was doing a tuneup he asked me if I checked for any codes. No I didn't. He told me go out and check first before you buy all those parts. I did and it called out the O2 sensor so I pushed the parts back to Jay and said I'd like to trade these for an O2 sensor. The price was about the same but the parts I first asked for would not have fixed my problem. Car passed inspection and my son got better fuel mileage on his way out to Valley Forge. Good video. Happy Motoring.

I will vouch for the weirdness of O2 sensor symptoms. My 91 Integra would hesitate for just a brief moment whenever it reached op temp then it was fine forever. But then on inspection day it failed NOX just barely but a fail is a fail. I let my guy have his way with it and within an hour he calls me and says he changed the O2 and it passed with tons of margin. It has never once hesitated since.

Old Corollas.. Not fun or exciting cars, but they run forever. I had an 03, which threw an upstream O2 sensor code. I replaced it, and the car ran a bit better, and got about 10% better fuel economy. On second thought.. That's one hot Corolla that can go from NC to Mexico that quickly! I'm not sure if an SR-71 can do it that fast!

We sold that same model of Toyota Corolla last year which was my mothers who inherited it off my grandmother when she died,we sold it because my mother can't drive anymore. The difference is it was right hand drive & it being an Australian built car it ran an OBD1.5 ECU meaning that while it was fitted with an OBD2 diagnostic port,it had an OBD1 compliant ECU fitted. My code reader/scanner couldn't read the data off it because it's an OBD2 only scan tool !

I'm not trying to insult anyone, but this is as easy as it gets. If you understand OBD2 theory, and how its applied, you would know what's wrong with the car just by reading the title of the video. The PCM is the main computer that runs the motor. It has 2 modes of operation. Open and closed loop. One of the problems you run into with modern emission is operating temperature. In order for your cats and o2 sensors to work properly, they need to be about 600 degrees. Anything less and the readings won't be correct. A car doesn't need o2 sensors to work. They're part of your emissions system. The pcm takes the readings from the o2 sensors and uses that information to set fuel trims. The only problem is, the o2 sensors won't show correct readings until they're hot. That's a problem because you would get a check engine light every time you started the car when its cold. That's where open and closed loop come in. When you first start your car, the pcm runs in open loop. Once the motor gets hot enough, it then goes into closed loop. When the vehicle is running in open loop, the pcm ignores the information it's getting from the cold o2 sensors. That's why the motor ran better when the o2 sensor was disconnected. It forced an open loop condition and bypassed the o2 sensors. That's why you weren't getting o2 readings when you were looking at the data stream on you scan tool. This is also why the car would run OK under wide open throttle. Its a safety feature. The faulty o2 sensor caused a huge lack of power. This is dangerous because you may need to step on the gas to avoid an accident, or something similar. WOT automatically bypasses the o2 sensors forcing an open loop event just like when the motor is cold. And that's what makes this such an easy diag. Given the description of the problem, there's really nothing else that it can be. This is one of the best diag procedures you have. Forcing an open loop condition bypasses the o2 sensors, and you can watch it happen in real time with your scan tool.

I maybe wrong but I thought when you went WOT the ECU would ignore the 02 sensor and just add lot's of fuel into the engine, then when you come off the throttle a bit it would refer back to the 02 sensor and adjust the fuelling accordingly, that's what I thought was happening to this Corolla. Thanks Kenny for an interesting video.

86 Fiero had the O2 sensor wire cut when I got it used. Ran well but rich. Smelled like the 70s! Installed new AZone sensor and it helped the blackening of the pipes and fuel economy. That was when I first learned that the O2 sensor "breathes" thru the wire, so even a crushed or kinked wire can make the O2 fail and soldering a broken wire is a waste of time! But to your point, it ran just fine. OBD 2 = obnoxious butthead diagnostics squared! Good for the environment but bad for the owner.

@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA Ай бұрын
No the ECU always reads those and gets info on mixture. They just go to a default timimg pattern and ignore the sensors at wide open, as then it no longer will be driving and trying to do closed loop mixture control. Likely a lazy sensor, killed by either being filled with leaded fuel a few times, or by work done on the engine inlet or exhaust, and they used silicone sealer, which got burnt in the engine, and which does the same. Had a similar thing on my car, though the performance was not affected much, but fuel economy definitely was, by around 20%.
