Two things, the cogging you are feeling can also be if you turn the input shaft in the wrong direction and you’re meshing the gears on the backside. The other thing is the glitter you are seeing could be the synchro material that also gets liberated in the oil and generally is not a problem. So using a magnet to catch the glitter may have been a good idea to see if it was ferrous or not.

I see it as a clear - cut case of ' Baby Huey logic ' An old cartoon show of Casper the Ghost ( I believe it was Harvey comics ) had a character of a huge baby duckling with an I.Q. of around .05. A fox was always trying to make him a giant duck dinner and was always fast talking him into something to which Baby Huey would say " DUH, that sounds logical " So for the new transmissions instead of having a hard time pulling those wiped- out pilot bearings, now mechanics can have a much easier time changing the entire transmission - " DUH, that sounds logical ! "

I worked as a tech at Toyota my first 10 years starting back in 92 and after leaving there was surprised to find other manufacturers had pilot bearings in their FWD vehicles. And we did get good at replacing bearings in those Toyota manuals. It was a gravy job for us.

Hondas from 2000 to around 2005ish are notorious for destroing input shaft bearings, despite having a pilot bearing. I just replaced the input shaft bearing in my 2004 Honda Fit and the same noise went away. Doing this in front of the block was not eazy but by far the hardes part was puting the rear motor mount in place.

Hey Kenny, don't feel to bad about it, had you got the car before the wrong clutch was fitted you would have noticed the racket the gearbox was making as you drove it in but as it was the thing was making so much noise with the the wrong clutch plate jumping over the splines you were never going to here the noise from the gearbox.

I once worked on a car that had a clutch release problem. The parts were brand new and correct. After the second failed install I decided to test parts. I put the pressure plate in my hydraulic press to check its operation. With the pressure plate compressed i saw it....a shard of metal about the size of a grain of rice, was lodged under one of the spring fingers preventing proper movement.

When it cones to ' no pilot bearing ' I can't help but think of a friend of my older brother back when I was a teen and working on his car they always sent me under for transmissions, driveshafts, etc. This one time he wanted me to put in his four- speed and I noticed the was no big Chevy ' donut ' pilot bushing in the crank. I told him and he just gave me a lot of harassment like he always did. ( I didn't like him ) then he gave me a bushing that looked like a skinny starter bushing. I told him that wouldn't work and he gave me more harassment, so I slipped it on the end of the input shaft and installed the trans. Some time later I heard him telling my brother how sometime when he got a quick slamming shift his whole car would vibrate tremendously and the speedo would almost shake out of the dash. It mystified him , and it also mystified him as to why I was laughing.

Still cheaper than automatic, and VW golf transmissions often enough, on the MK1 versions, will do 2 million miles with no problems at all. Those hardly ever fail, unlike all the auto boxes that die and need a rebuild or replacement. Just a cheap clutch every so often, and a known failure of the firewall cracking around the clutch pedal, which has aftermarket cables, pedals and brace kits to fix it as well. $5 for the kit of parts to make the linkages work like new as well, and away you go for the next few years.

A lot like wheel bearings, they can still be real tight and have no really noticeable roughness, but yet when they are spinning with weight, any breakdown of the bearing surface can get pretty noisy. I can see how it could get by you.

So you think the customer is qualified to diagnose clutch/transmission problems? What does Kenny always say about the customer telling the shop what's wrong? If the customer says it's the trans but it's actually the driveshaft universals that is the problem what do you fix, the trans or the driveshaft? Blaming the customer is a lame cop out.
@stephenmeeks684
@stephenmeeks684 24 күн бұрын
@@ForCrynOutLoud No, FCOL, but the customer had the car towed in, because the clutch and transmission were making noise. The clutch was the first thing approved by the customer for repair. Wrenching said he did not think the trans was bad until the clutch was replaced.

KZbin *Gold* ... _It is what it is. What are you going to do?_ _Things happen! What are you going to do?_ _What are you going to do? Things happen!_ Hope I get to use these myself some time but not too soon! I would be as likely to suspect the replacement gearbox as the old one, based on the noise they made. The glitter looks like the only solid lead but how unusual is that? If you grind the gears (inattentive clutch on gear change) 20 times in the gearbox life, isn't that going to cause some glitter? It sounds like it would.

Normally the input shaft does not go all the way through the transmission with a bearing on either end. Possibly why it doesn't have a pilot bushing/bearing?

most front wheel drive boxes the shafts run taper bearings with preload to keep them running true. After a while bearing wear allows the shafts to float hence the noise and rough feel

Kenny it came in and was diagnosed as an incorrectly fitted clutch. It's not unreasonable to assume you've found the answer to the problem. When possible, I ask the customer to give me an outline of noises and symptoms relating to the problem they have. It sometimes gives you information to say, hold on, there's more to this than meets the eye. If you follow the process to an extended assessment, you'd fix every thing that was wrong on the vehicle. Great video, you're a great mechanic, keep on wrenching!
