Where I am, being asked for your ID at 25 is normal because the laws around asking for it actually include something called Challenge 25, wherein if a customer looks to be 25 or younger you are legally required to ask for their ID (they only have to be 18+ to purchase alcohol though.) If the customer cannot present an ID when asked then regardless of their age you are legally required to deny service (yes, even if they look 50) however if the customer does present ID and is of the legal age to purchase then you proceed with the transaction.

Yep, I've come across a person who had a deep voice and he was a teenager...And I was surprised to say "You're this age and you have a deep voice???" I was amazed by it. To be fair, I think (depending on the service of course) it should be a shared effort. Parents and companies both monitor on their respective ends, which makes the inevitable cracks fewer and harder to get through. But unfortunately parents can be neglectful and companies only care about money. But Discord is aimed at teens and adults, since yknow... social media... so it should be up to parents to know what their kids are doing. Parents should be responsible for their underage kids using the app, while Discord should worry about the younger teens safety and not nine-year-old Timmy who was just thrown an ipad

worst part is the facial scan thing in some cases, what if I have what is called a baby face? I'm just about 27 years old and my face didn't change much other than some details that would indicate me as an adult but then if there's baby faced men out there they have to grow facial hair or else they're done for, but then there's women, how will that work with a baby faced woman? their existence just means their done for? like this whole facial scan thing is stupid cause the scans are bound to be failed upon and miscalculated, everyone's facial structure is different from the rest so trying to use AI to identify age via a facial scan is impossible and can be an identity theft crisis so this could lead to more problems than it fixes but let's just hope Discord makes this work and keeps security high

I have taken a look at the developer documentation. It appears it works by downloading an AI model to a web browser window (on mobile, the model would be bundled within the app instead). The facial analysis is performed within the window/app, running on your own hardware, and then the estimation result is sent back to the web server. China and Korea already require you to use a government ID to use the internet and they log most of what you do and use, all tied to your real life... That's why China and Korea can easily pass laws banning kids from playing games more than three hours a week and enforce it, because they have to use their real identities to signup and play those games. It just so happens, that it makes it incredibly easy to deperson you if you commit wrong think; say the wrong thing in a comment? You're banned from every platform ever, and the police are coming to your door right now! A fuck ton of Picture data, specifically from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (you name an ethically dubious social media company, they've probably sold data to AI shit). Notably with Facebook you can add photos of yourself and put in your age so I'm willing to wager that's where this AI is getting data from. How is it getting children picture data? That's where things get blurry. Either social media companies know minors are on their platforms and sold off their data, or more likely (not for ethical reasons, just lazy ones) the AI doesn't have facial information on children so if it can't ID you it'll mark you as a kid.

Is this also perhaps related to the new Australian social media laws which mean the company willed be fined $55 million dollars for serious violations of the 16+ years old social media only policy? And with all the less than 16 year olds on discord, I can confidently say that Australia would view that as a serious violation.

As someone that has people confused over their age irl, so much that at one point I was 20+ and the guy that made my passport looked at me confused for 5 good minutes after I told him my age, this sucks. On top of the fact that this AI is harvesting the picture to create even more data they might not sell it but they still use it to train their shitty AI.
