Today I share my stock up shopping trip where I visited my favorite stores to load up in discount groceries: 99 cent store, Grocery Outlet, Aldi and locally owned Atlas Market. I shopped late Friday night and early Saturday morning. No traffic, no crowds - just super great finds! Just over $100 for two weeks of groceries for a family of 3.

Considering California is an expensive state these deals you are getting are incredible. I live in NY and we have an Aldi also, but these other stores are all new to me. Very impressive!

It can be expensive, which is the reason I drive out to those unconventional stores and stock up every few weeks. It's a chunk of time, but I enjoy deal hunting and it saves us money! I wish the 99 cent only store would go national like DT. I like them much more than DT for food buys. Aldi is great and if I didn't have the other stores available to me, I'd probably shop there exclusively 😃

I work in a grocery store and have for years. While i too love a good bargain and understand the need to watch funds when shopping, the one thing that makes my job miserable is the people that are forever trying to get "a deal" on things that are not on sale or marked down. They come to a high end supermarket wanting to get low end deals and pester and complain so much about the prices. I really appreciate that you show people how to get deals when they are AVAILABLE and at places that can easily accomodate lower price options. Please, people, stop going to high end stores thinking that we can adjust prices to your budget. Things will be marked down when they are marked down, not when you think you should get it cheaper. And one more point- there is a difference between an expiration date and a best before date. Best before means that it is deemed at its best before the date shown. It doesn't explode the day after, so if you have a product that had 3 days left on its best before date, dont expect me to reduce it for you because you say you cant eat it in that amount of time. It will be fine for some time after if you store it properly.

I love those for great bargains and I feel that it really helps with food waste as well. You're so lucky to have farmer's markets on Sundays. The ones around here are usually on an oddball day like Wednesday or Thursday when many people are working :(. I appreciate your kind words and cultur-ification...haha I made up a new word! You have the most unique and informative frugal channel I've come across. Well done. One suggestion. I am strongly against chemicals in my food and it is much healthier to avoid store bought breads because of the dough enhancers. I use a vintage, and very simple, bread machine to make my bread - I paid $8 for it at a thrift store and it paid for itself in less than six months. A loaf of bread costs me about .25 cents a loaf and I add wheat germ or whole wheat or seeds to increase nutrition. I also make my own bagels, pizza dough, and ciabattas without my bread machine. Very easy and they all freeze well. May I further suggest you ignore the calorie count on packages, and instead read all the chemicals and avoid the chemicals - the calories take care of themselves if you eat food - not additives. I noticed the label on the potato salad - I make my own, ingredients are potatoes, onion, celery, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper - what's in the potato salad you bought?

The date on products does not mean expiration. It is simply a best used by, or need to sell by date. I have used many items years past that date with no problem. The things you need to look for are leakage, no seals, opened, rusty, moldy, bulging, or an unpleasant or not quite right odor. Dried goods that are stale can be reinvigorated (made crisp again) by putting them in the oven on a cookie sheet at low temp for 5-10 minutes. I do that with cereals, chips, popcorn, crackers, cookies & anything that is supposed to have a good crunch.

That yogurt was such a score I should have bought more!! Yes I did end up freezing some and it made the texture a little bit gritty, but I didn't mind it at all. I think freezing it might even make it easier to make yogurt cheese because the whey was already separating a bit. I wish you Brown Cow luck at your 99!! Mine can be hit or miss too, but I've found shopping early weekends and even venturing out to other parts of town helps for better finds. Right on on the GF and Organic! :) Thanks again for watching! 💕

Love the way that you describe what you buy when you buy why and where as these are all things I also think about when I shop. We also have a local GO and ours has excellent cheese prices. Many people like to freeze their cheese even cream cheese... I havent had very good luck with it as most cheese gets crumbly after thawing. I like to wax any hard cheeses tho and make our own sharp aged cheddar from discount mild cheddar um yes please ;) I have even heard of canning it. My cream cheese keeps very well in the cheese keeper compartment in the fridge and I buy lots like 10 boxes when its 99 cents. GO also has a great organics section in most categories now. I also get their Atlas mason jars of Classico mixed fruit and pasta sauces. Reuse them with new lids and they are perfect size for applesauce and relishes. (I saw yours in another vid ;) Great job on the channel. Namaste
@TheFrugalMinimalist
@TheFrugalMinimalist 5 жыл бұрын
Our GO is great for cheeses too! You must be a west coaster :) And yes the cheese does get crumbly after freezing, but in cooked foods it works really well and at least we can't tell it was frozen at any point. 😂. For cream cheese I've done both freezer and fridge and you're right even in the fridge it keeps for a very long time past the date even. I love that they've expanded the organics section. Those Atlas mason jars are so great. What kind of lids do you use? Do you buy canning lids for them? Thank you so much for all your tips! I love frugal talk. 😂🙏

Being that you are in such a well populated area, I know for a FACT(!) you could charge people to go shopping with you (or you with them) to teach them to search out deals in their stores. Before hand you would probably want to know what stores they typically shop, their dietary preferences/needs, and if they are willing to change where/how they shop.

Maria; As I watched the video, I just knew some people here would lecture her on nutrition! I think you're missing the whole purpose of her videos. What people EAT is a very personal matter, so unless you're ASKED questions about the nutritional value of the foods anyone eats, I just can't understand how Americans, nowadays, are given to giving unsolicited advice on such personal matter. Do you also give unsolicited advice to people the soap, toothpaste, and deodorant they use? Sorry, but I'm stunned at how rude so many people (in our country, the US) that they would find such behavior (re commenting to people about what they eat) so completely appropriate.

Buying unprocessed foods are more frugal then buying premade products. I will buy beans, brown rice, fresh produce, and dried products like rice noodles, and canned tuna, eggs, plain big 32 oz tubs of yogurt (it’s more frugal to make it though). No processed foods (except specialty items in Asian stores like Tom Yum paste, Memmu, and Ponzu, Miso. No cookies, deserts, or candies (I don’t have children though LOL). Having a juicer and a food processor/ NutriBullet type blender helps a lot too. Wish I had room for a freezer! You could make cereal bars for cheap and very healthy. I agree...the music is awful. Makes me feel like I am 3 years old. It’s an over used tune on you tube...I usually turn off sound , but here I can’t. Love your channel! Oh, and my car mount (after returning a cheaper one that failed) cost me $18.99! It is so indispensable though, and I am not sorry. Do some research...there are many different kinds, and the cheap ones did not work for me.

Haha, many cashiers have called me out on this too, Carmen! Yes I’m a fan of even numbers too! My mother is very superstitious and always advocated pairs in everything except for the number four. It has taken me many years to be able to buy things in fours due to that, but I think I’m over that now. The even pair thing lives on strong 😅 I cannot separate chopsticks and I cringe on the inside when I see people doing this. I’m curious if you’re willing to share, where does your thing on even numbers come from? 😃

You had initial issues going into a Middle Eastern Market? What was the issue? Suppose if the tables were turned, and someone felt going into an Asian market? The clerks would be happy to help translate an item if the box was in Arabic.
@TheFrugalMinimalist

Aw man, I could probably write a book on this. It just has everything to do with me and how I am. Long story short, I'm a quiet person who likes to keep to myself. Any attention to me in anyway makes me nervous and uncomfortable, so me standing out by being the only Asian there makes me uncomfortable. Being around people in general exhausts me physically and mentally. Probably a lot of issues behind the scenes there, but it is what it is. Why am I on YT would be a logical question - good or bad, it's my attempt to break out of that.

CJ - I just assumed she was trying to encourage everyone to shop there even if they're not Middle-Eastern or of Middle-Eastern heritage. MANY people don't want to STAND OUT when they shop in a store. So,she was addressing THOSE people who thought they might be "intruding" if they entered the store. (And, btw, I'm white (non-hispanic/latino) and when I first starting going into ethnic markers, my hesitation was ONLY they the owners/customers might think I was INTRUDING. That's the ONLY reason. (And after the first time or two, I felt VERY comfortable in every type I've visited. I didn't notice anyone looking twice at me or even noticing my presence unless I asked an employee---or even a customer who looked like they knew what what i wanted to ask). I will say that I CAN understand your reaction though in light of many ignorant people who think "Middle Easterners" are people who are to be feared, etc. It's sickening and so very wrong.

I'm sorry to hear, Janet! Have you tried shopping it at different times and finding out when they have deliveries? It took some trial and error on mine, but I found that if I go early mornings on the weekend the selection is good with the workers stocking everything. I know some stores start stocking Friday too! If I don't go anywhere close to those stocking times, the selection isn't nearly as good. I hope that helps a bit. I wish you great deals at your 99!! Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great week!

Do you shop with a list or not? I was just wondering because many folks advocate sticking to a list or mainly to a list. You appear to focus more on the search for deals for each item individually.
@TheFrugalMinimalist
@TheFrugalMinimalist 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! I do not shop with a list, other than loss leader items. You're right, I only focus on searching for deals on things we'll eat. Generally with my freezer and pantry, we have a good supply of items. So even though foods seem random, we generally eat similar things, just different brands. I find that for us, this way saves more money than shopping with a list.

I love it, you have such a great memory and eye!! I did remember this video while making the other one with #26, which is the reason I specifically showed the Dollar Tree desk type organizers, which is what I was referring to! I never thought any one would ever really care enough to watch for consistency between videos, but I really am focusing on staying consistent and true! I think in another one I said that I bought tri fold paper towels from Costco for my under cabinet mounting, and while true, it really was a while ago that we bought it and they're pretty much untouched because we tend to use alternatives. We haven't bought them since, so we're staying true! Thank you for your great comment and for watching. I hope you're having a great day!

Okay, can someone explain to me why you buy 6 boxes of eggs, and so many Yoghurt and milk. How will this stay good for such a long time. Do you freeze the milk and Yoghurt? And after opening I assume you consume it within the time that is written in the advice on the box. I don't judge but trying to understand.
@TheFrugalMinimalist
@TheFrugalMinimalist 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! For the eggs, I like to batch cook. 4 dozen of the eggs go in to making breakfast burritos for the month which I freeze. The remaining 2 dozen used in daily cooking. And for the milk we go through that in a week's time before it goes bad. I have a teenager. Milk can freeze well, but we don't have to since we go through it quickly. And yes the yogurt I froze, then just thawed it out when we were ready to eat it and it was fine...a bit grainy but otherwise still good! There are many foods that can be frozen. Buying near those sell by and expiration dates and freezing the foods can save a lot. I hope this helps!

@@TheFrugalMinimalist yes, overhere we almost never buy food that is near sell life. It has a discount but overhere it's not very common to do so. But of course it saves a bit of money.
