Why do National Grid pay such high dividends when they have so much debt and are raising capital via rights issues?

A fair question Mark! I believe the company has good insight into revenue forecasts, which makes it a good candidate for dividends. Debt is also gradually coming down but as with any company remainds a concern in a world where interest rates have done what they have. Ultimately, the company has agreed to reduce it's dividend to accomodate their investment plans - sharing the 'cost' between the rights issue, debt usage, operational cashflow and cash saved from the dividend reduction.
