The small hydroplane racing boats have been around a long time. Since the 1950’s. Three companies sold plans that I know of. They were Clark Craft Boats, Hal Kelly Boats and Glen-L Boats. I built a hydroplane in 1975 from a set of plans in my high school wood shop. Today with the internet finding all the correct hardware and marine supplies is very easy. Most lumber yards have marine plywoods and door skins for the build. Many use vintage outboard motors or they will use a Japanese Yamato motor. They are super fun to drive.

Here on the west coast, we used to call the #2 boats "Punkin-seed hydros". When I was a kid in the late 50's and 60's, most docks on the lake had one or two of these little guys, and races were held once a year. Lots of full classes. Most of them were powered by Mercury "Hurricane 10's". Ah the smell of castor oil!!!

They had Tiny Hydroplane Mini Watercraft races on the rivers in Maine when I was a kid, and I'm 60. Sometimes the bottoms would peel off at 50 MPH, no one got injured by the grace of God.

@gerilynntarvin94026 жыл бұрын
great stuff BUT unless you are 80, #2 was being built and raced in the mid 50's. they were called "punkin seeds" quick and easy to build and any outboard that run would make a fun ride out of it.

Tiny Titan Hydroplane (no2) is actually an old construction from about 1970. I have seen it in Popular Mechanics from about 1970 where it was described in detail with complete drawings. I was building my own boat at that time and had big attention in that boat, but had built another one for myself to use. Popular Mechanichs called it "the flying slipper" at that time.

I would like to think that one day I would be buried at sea. But Sparky the boat. Looks like a coffin. This boat looks like a do-it-yourself suicide kit. That's equipped to get you out there. with your very own coffin. They look so stable it looks like a death trap.

I had #2 a hydro with a 7.5 Mercury outboard on it. It looked just like the one on this video. Mine was red with black black and silver stripes with a maple leaf overlay. It was cool I have pictures of it still but my dad sold it a long time ago. I had a few more when I got older, I was 7 then. The ones I had when I was older my dad could not sell ha ha. But it was cool fix it up and fiberglass it and paint it and run it. We lived on Wooten Lake in Belfair Washington. Doug Kitrick used to have about 15 Hydroplane's across the lake so he was a huge inspiration, R.I.P Doug! Mine would go 35 with a 1980 7.5 Mercury. It would pull,my my mom waterskieng with my driving it at 7 years old., Doug had Mercury Super 10 and 20's on most of his. Good times. I'm thinking of building a custom tiny boat. A tiny version of a 21 foot tunnel hull I built and used to build and sell. Hurricane Performance Tunnell Hulls. I live on my one of my boats so I'm a serious boater lol. I'm on one right now!
