See how Australian researchers and manufacturers are punching above their weight on performance of their solar technologies. From solar cells with record-breaking efficiency to massive solar panel arrays that can be deployed in record time, it's a golden age for solar innovation in Australia.
Finn Peacock explains:
* How the modern solar cell was invented by a small team in Sydney.
* How Australian-made solar panels are outperforming imported panels after years in the desert.
* The Australian-made and invented racking that enables the installation of hundreds of kilowatts of panels in a single day.
* The best home solar inverter you've never heard of made in Melbourne to military standards.
* Why overseas solar monitoring software isn't nearly as useful as this Australian advanced solar monitoring solution.
And Ronald explains why there's no need to stress if you don't want to pay more for Australian-made gear.

I would have loved to have bought Tindo OZ made... The reseller they gave me in WA was so full of BS, I could not even stand him on the phone. The amount of sales rubbish he told me, he did not know I was an electrical engineer. He even told me microinverters would last 100 years xD Hopefully, they will introduce QA to their resellers.

Hi Finn, great coverage of OZ made solar products there. But one issue that I have noticed is that almost all the electricity providers with solar programs just dont have OZ made panel or inverter options available to choose from! Is there a way by which we can ensure that these providers give the customers at least one OZ option to choose from so that the customer is given a fair choice?

Tindo panels are great but all solar panels including those using micro inverters generate a lot of electrical noise on the power lines: My meter almost goes off scale. If I'd known about the noise I probably would have bought the centralised inverter to save money. I did ask Tindo about electrical noise prior to purchase but they were unable to answer this question. Electrical noise is one area Tindo and other manufacturers need to improve on: All kinds of inverters generate a lot of electrical noise. Tindo estimates of electrical consumption were inaccurate despite providing them with power use data. As a result we bought a 5 kW system when we should have bought an ~8-10 kW system. I do love the online analysis tool that Tindo provide... as it allowed us to finally confirm how much power we were using. If we had 8 kW of power we'd be roughly energy independent. If we had 10 kW of power we'd be producing enough power to run the house even in winter. The next step is to work out how much extra power electric heating would require? We have gas at the moment and it costs ~$350-500/quarter during winter. Probably $1000-$1500/yr total. It's surprisingly hard to get good estimates of power use for electic heaters? It's also surprisingly hard to get good info on power use on airconditioners. N.B. With better energy monitoring we've been slowly upgrading equipment around the house focussing on energy efficient replacements e.g. Even our new TV will pay for itself in energy savings within a fwe years. :-)

I was interested in the Solar Analytics software but I noticed once you go over a 15kW limit, their prices double. I couldn't see the reason why (other than increased profit) as the output to me would be the same. I can understand why commercial entities might be charged more but I think residential systems are generally much the same.

If manufacturing finds a local market they can expand production and also export. So they would have a more stable and larger market, and lower shipping expenses. Also, for local customers the energy use and carbon emissions from shipping will be lower. We're not running freight from solar or wind, it's diesel.

Be nice if solar analytics did Enphase via the API. They don’t need to Enphase to do anything, customer would just provide access details to Solar Analytics to use. Does not need to be real-time, even hourly would be way more than enough. The analytics is the benefit.
@NotTheRealRyan
@NotTheRealRyan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, would buy it tomorrow if Solar Analytics could consume the Enphase API same as PVOutput can. I even bought the Enphase Manager sub to get per panel data.

It should be first solar cdte cells, all, throughout. So much more efficient in manufacturing, that is main cost. and worker cost and operation time, the cdte degrades at half the rate, and can be made flexible, lighter weight, fully recycleable, and completely effective, still works better in clouds. This is the way.

How do your panels cope with hail storm impacts?
@SolarQuotes
@SolarQuotes Жыл бұрын
Good question: Hail testing is mandatory under Australian standards. IEC 61215 requires panels to survive 25mm diameter ice balls fired at 23m/s. Really nasty hail storms will be worse that this, so make sure your system is on the house insurance!
