Beautiful. Love a culture that appreciates and embraces it’s indigenous roots.

I would love to live there beautiful city and safe but it doesn't work for me just because of the humidity in the summer months .I can do heat but dry heat over all I prefer cooler climate up in the mountains.

There are several nice, older neighborhoods, but once you get into Centro and south it's pretty much a time ravaged slum. Centro is filthy, sidewalks 4 inches wide while cars zoom past you. Abandoned buildings every other one. Restaurants owned by expats that serve tiny portions for a ridiculous price. The outdoor and indoor markets are disgusting. Safe food handling practices here are non-existent. You can watch someone handle raw meat, then make up a plate of food and hand it to the customer. The smell in downtown is a combination of sewer, smog, and garbage. If you go for the cultural events, there's one bathroom pretty much in the entire downtown, and it's 50 pesos, and up 3 flights of stairs. If you're old or have incontinence issues, stay at your hotel. Even up north the people here have zero pride in their city. There's trash everywhere, piles of it that have been sitting since I moved here. I live in a new place, and across the street looks like a landfill. Out front the street is full of litter. I watch people drink a Coke, then just throw it on the ground. And don't believe a word of how great the Mayan cuisine is. Very few places here do it well, probably because it's really not all that great in the first place. If you want good food, go to Oaxaca, or Mexico City, because you won't even find a good taco place here. There are a couple of upsides though. Most of the people we've interacted with here have been very nice and helpful. There's also great medical care, and if you're uninsured it's still pretty affordable. Progreso beach is nice, although don't expect the white sand beaches like Cancun. It's gravel beaches and murky water. It's the worlds largest pier, so the water is really polluted. But the Malecon is enjoyable to walk on, and the little bars that are all along it are fun, and the drinks are reasonable. Videos about this city are always in the best parts of town, or showing beautiful old buildings. Even those are being seen through the filter of the camera and the editor. Most buildings here are super old and run down.

hotter than hell over there, half a million people left Florida last year because of the heat and humidity and hurricanes, Merida is 10X hotter and more humid than South Florida, sea level rise, climate change, bad infrastructure, economic instability, no thanks! South East Asia and Eastern Europe are a way better deal, Mexico is way over priced and over rated because its close to the US! you pay out the nose for it!
