Hola Amigos, today I'm sharing my experience of returning back to the USA after spending two amazing years living in Mexico. Don't worry, I'm still here to explore the Yucatan with you, but I feel like this video might help provide some valuable insights to anyone curious about visiting Merida, or the United States.

USA people who lives in Mexico, please do your best effort to respect our country, it is beautiful because our culture allow it, so try to stick to it and not to try to change as you think it is normal for you. You are running away from USA culture, so, enjoy ours as is.

You may suffer allergies in the USA depending upon the type of pollen, e.g., oak or maple tree pollen can be an issue, but the pollen from other trees may not be. Evergreens and palm trees rarely cause issues. Some tree species are male or female, but many shade trees that cause allergies are actually both male and female (monoecious).

Hi! We welcome anyone that wants to come here. Just please be respectful to our culture and our ways. We have heard how some people from the US living here complain about the noise (yes, sometimes we are noisy) , our "organilleros", our Mariachi or Bandas, but those things are part of our history and culture. Also, I heard how a group of north americans did not allow Mexican people watch the eclipse at a site that is public here in Mexico! And they were very rude. Please, if you appreciate more living in México than in the US do not try to turn our country into the place you are running away from! Having said that... Welcome to México!!

Thanks for the the rational welcome. This confuses me so much. I've heard stories like this way more than I would have ever expected coming here. Same with people demanding English. I understand that the transition can be hard but come on, children are more civilized. It's like they went for a 5000km walk and got confused where they were. Waking up Mariachi means celebration, not a reason to be angry. Thanks for adding it can't be said enough. ❤️

I retired from my career in Texas as a corporate attorney at age 60. I was totally burned out and experiencing several serious physical symptoms of extremely high stress. After 35 years of too much work for one lawyer, tight deadlines with hundreds of jobs depending on the success of my contract negotiations, overbearing personalities of top management with big egos and other challenges, I moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on the Pacific Ocean. It is such a laid-back relaxing place with a sizable expat community from all over the world, endless activities, friendly locals and wonderful food. I used to get very sick in Texas 3-4 times per year from horrible allergies and resulting sinus infections. Those allergies disappeared in Mexico. You must be careful where you live in Mexico, but there are plenty of safe cities, safer than so many places in the US. One of the many noticeable differences, especially if you are older, is that there is less ageism. People of different generations mix with each other a lot more. Provided you respect the different Mexican culture and don't become "the ugly American" most Mexicans are very courteous. I have now been here 14 years! I do not visit the US very often any more because politics have become so hateful and divisive, I don't like the rat race with everyone frantically rushing around in their cars, and I hate the American medical hamster wheel of endless doctor visits when you are older even if you are in good health. I had 11 prescriptions when I moved here; now I have only one! I have returned to the US for treatment when I had a ladder accident, for laser cataract surgery and a prostate procedure but only so that I could use my insurance. If I have some minor health issue I can visit a doctor at a pharmacy without an appointment for approx US$6.00! There are some things I miss about the US such as my church but not enough to move back. I have a maid clean my house twice per week, something that would be too expensive for me in the US. It helps a lot to speak Spanish. I'm not really what I consider fluent, but I took lessons and can speak basic Spanish rather well. Overall, I love my life in Mexico.

Churches are just social clubs anyway. A belief in mythological creatures and celestial dictators is slowly but surely fading from the minds of the educated and enlightened. It took only a thouand years for the Egyptians to switch off from the Moon and Sun gods of the greeks to the pharoahs, and now even the absurdity of that has been replaced by the son of God that rose from the dead, and is strolling around Hollywood blvd or somewhere I suppose.

I thought I was the only one who gets that. It's mostly economic, but the US likes having Mexico where it is. Like a local mini China. Great trade partmer and the backup plan for all economic matters. But Mexico is resistant to the new world order. They have the religious wing, but the rest is a generation behind, at least and may not even gain a foothold here. Life is better in every way just without the fake economic motor/slavery that exists in the US. Mexicans are real free people. The former USA can't afford the world to know the truth about this or anything else.

Isn't it amazing how Mexico changes your entire outlook on life? You have just found out the truth about Mexico, through your own experience, and not through the advisories put out by the US Department of State. This is part of the reason why, despite these warnings from their own government, US citizens keep flocking to Mexico, whether for vacation or to stay. I am a Mexican who has lived throughout the US and Canada and while I've been blessed with a nice quality of life, I'll tell you this: I will NOT be spending my golden years in either the US or Canada. I will be moving back home to Mexico shortly and really enjoy life.

GREAT video! I'm an American expat who has lived in Japan for 20 years, so your observations were some of the same I've made whenever I return to my native Washington state (Seattle area). Much as I think American people are kind-hearted and friendly, I think the culture they live in convinces them some strange things, such as: 1) When I go to work, it's okay to be miserable and give bad service to customers; 2) competition amongst us should extend to many of our social interactions and 3) America is the freest place on Earth, and everywhere else doesn't compare, so I'm going to assume bad things about where you live that aren't based in actually having gone there. Anyway, just a few of my reflections from your excellent video. Last, looks like you found yourself a beautiful spot! I've subscribed because I want to see more of it!

I haven't visited the country since the late 80's and aware it's changed tremendously. One of my good friends went down south to Mexico City last week and is currently travelling around. The locals have been helpful sharing very useful safety tips. Case and point. Just because the environment feels relaxed by comparison to other places, you still need to be on point, at all times. Don't fall for the Okie Doke! My friend (a USA born Chicano) has an advantage in that he looks Mexican, can speak, dress, and act like the locals too. That's a huge plus when dealing with the people down there. Thanks for sharing and safe travels!

I would agree that previously people would say hello from time to time as I passed, as did I but not on the regular..though II always said Hola....the older I get the more I hear Buenas Dias, Buenos Tardes/Noche...Buen Dia etc. So we elderly (ugh in my late 50's) I can say that when one gets older, people start greeting me more often and really more respectfully. For example people called you and ask you before visiting you. And in Mexico anyone can knock in your door at any time and I now don’t like that lol I miss Mexico everyday, especially the food, because Mexican food in the USA it’s not authentic.

Merida/Yucatan was the first of our 3 Mexican trips, in December 2021. We stayed near Parque Santa Ana. I easily could have unpacked and just...stayed. Strange to be in a foreign land and feel instantly 'at home'. There were, however, days when I thought the sun was trying to murder me. 😀 "Isn't it dangerous?/Aren't you afraid?" are by far the most common comments from friends and family. I've never felt in danger, even when walking the streets of Mexico City. (Coyoacan is totally awesome, BTW)

I live between Florida, US and Oaxaca, MX. I am much happier in Mexico than the US, and live better! Everyone I encounter on the street are friendly and helpful. I walk 3-10 miles every day in both places - bored in the US, interesting in Mexico. Last month I was back in the US and was shocked at the prices of food, clothes, and most everything. My girl friend and I had dinner in a restaurant in Oaxaca yesterday. We arrived at 2:30, we left there at 9 pm. We talked with the owners, other clients and friends. And had a great time. That is common in Mexico, and absent in the US. I don't have a car either place (first time in 60 years!). You are right about zoning in the US. In the US, there areno stores or services within 2 miles. My home in Mexico is near little markets, restaurants, and interesting things. Walking in the US is boring, in Mexico - never boring. I lived in LA for 3 years during Covid and often felt unsafe when out walking. In Oaxaca, I have never felt unsafe. I love Mexico! All of my friends in Mexico are Mexicans - and one Italian! There are other expats, but I rarely interact with them. Good video - fairly presented information.

We loved El Cocuy, Parque Nacional Los Nevados was cool, El Eje Cafetero, Tatacia Desert, small towns… I don’t know, there was a lot. We were there for about ten months in total. We’ve only been in Peru for a few weeks but the food seems to be pretty good… and the ruins are super interesting. We went to one in Trujillo that they’re still uncovering (that’s 600-800 years older than the Inca civilization. Ecuador was also a cool country. We were there for about 2.5 months. Honestly all of the countries have a lot to offer. Although none of the food comes even close to Mexico’s. 😅

There are going to be beautiful, amazing, and friendly people/cultures in any country. Unfortunately, our big cities tend to not show that as much as the small towns here in the US. Pretty sure the same applies to Mexico in its big border towns. I haven't been to Mexico in a long time, but I'm hoping to change that within the next few years. This is a great video. I'm in my early sixties and I remember growing up in my home state of New Jersey when every body wasn't against each other. Now, because of politics, you can just feel the tension in the air, and its all over America too. I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area and its even worse here. You just get the feeling that people would do anything. It's now popular for people to present themselves as unfriendly and disrespectful, because in their eyes, they want to be seen as powerful. That is all the rage in America right now, everyone wants to be seen as powerful. "I want you to know that I'm better than you," is what what people's public behavior says. I wasn't always like this in America, but it certainly seems like it has become the new norm. People here want you to see their expensive iPhone, which they conveniently whip out when approaching each other so they don't have to say good morning to each other. Its a power struggle. Every encounter is a power struggle, because Americans are obsessed with being seen as" powerful," not just an ordinary person walking down the street like you or any other ordinary person walking down the street. So, now what you have in America are 340 million people, of which a great majority want to be seen as powerful and it kinda looks like this; He or she, almost to the point of sickening cliche, presents as this super smart and super rich tech company exec who has really poor social skills (because they're super smart and all super smart people presumably have poor social skills), but it doesn't matter because he or she is also super rich. This is literally every single person under the age of 50 you encounter in the Bay Area, every single day. You see them walking fast, really more like marching, engrossed into their iPhone screen of the newest version iPhone held prominently in hand, not looking at anyone around them, walking into traffic, because it is rest of society's duty, presumably those who are not powerful like them, to watch out for them and to stop for them so they can safely cross the street or intersection, and, because they are powerful, its not their job to see to their own safety. In fact, nothing is their job. They do everything poorly and expend the bare minimum in all their tasks. There is no pride in their work. They are not going to help you. They are not going to give you a kind word or compliment. Greeting of the day? good morning? you can forget about that! It is all about them! Having manners and good social skills, as far as they see it, is not the sign of a powerful person. Of course then, when you throw in the current toxic American political posture, these people seem even more monstrous. There has to be a complete lack of self awareness of how ignorant they seem in the eyes of truly educated and caring people, but even if they were aware, I don't think they would even care. This is the new "modern" American person; Completely delusional. It too late to put the Geaney back into the bottle!

When I went back to visit Europe, I saw it everywhere and thought we ended up in bad areas. I only knew of Prague from the 90s. Places like that ended up being among the safest and reasonably friendly places (hit or miss), but I love it. The cars thing also applies only to the Downtown or Centro. If you live there you don't need a car. If you live elsewhere... It depends, but many places specially outside of the "periférico", would definitely require for you to have a car. I mean I don't think Mexico is much less violent from the experience of my friends and family, but I think I know what you mean. My grandma once said the same thing about Americans, that they seem to just hate each other. I think it is the excessive individualistic culture they have which they take to an extreme. That is why I prefer neighboorhoods with hispanic people overall. When it comes to work, Americans tend to be friendly coworkers, but not as strangers or even as students so much. I do have to say that I had some pretty good street tacos in Ensenada. They were much better than anything I have ever had even in nice Mexican restaurants in the U.S.

Great video, quite accurate tbh. Although Merida is not like the rest of Mexico, I was born here and I can tell you that this is not like any other city in Mexico (maybe only Campeche). Most of the republic has a serious problem with violence and crime, its "normal" for a lot of business to pay a fee to the crime organizations just to keep operating their business (derecho de piso). The national percentage of unsolved crimes is over 90% and in some states the police is just as bad as the narcos, having said that we in Merida do NOT experience any of that, but I know that we are the lucky few. Now obviously there are some zones in the country where there is not that many problems but those are the exceptions.

After 3 years in a medium size city in Veracruz state where we have never met another gringo my experience has been that people are very friendly and very helpful. In the US we lived in a very rural community in western Colorado for 25 years where we knew everyone, but when we were visiting Denver, nobody ever said hi to us on the street. Here that happens every day on the street. Mérida is much hotter than here, but I must say that during the hot months 25% of the men are wearing shorts in the grocery stores or walking on the street. I've counted. But unless it is a lunch stand, people do dress nicer for dinner. I wear shorts and a collared shirt for the local pizza place, but I put on pants for dinner downtown. My friends talk politics with me a lot, perhaps because they know I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the country. But I have noticed a reticence to discuss politics in groups. Most are strongly in AMLO's corner, but a few think we are on the path to being another Venezuela. I guess it's similar to where we lived in Colorado which voted 70% Trump in the past two elections. The biggest difference that I noticed going back for a visit is that tipping is way out of control in the US. Oh, crime. I have seen none, similar to where we lived in the US. In 25 years there were 2 burglaries and 1 murder. But I have been warned about not driving a certain highway through the mountains, similar to some remote areas of the mountains in the South when I lived there in the 1960s.

Staffing levels in the USA doesn't have anything to do with being hard-working, or not. It has to do with paychecks. Working Americans are suffering over a half-century of stagnant and declining wages due to voodoo trickle-down Reaganomics. Pay rates don't even keep up with inflation. They are, literally, working for _less_ money year after year, decade after decade. In addition, the Republicans purposefully kept racism alive after the Civil Rights Act via "The Southern Strategy". That is how they attracted all the racist Dixiecrats to the GOP and the parties flipped positions.

*I give you a great recommendation so that no one abuses you and you spend your money better* If you came to Mexico, investigate how much it costs to rent a home in the area before renting it, ask several people about the houses that you like, ask them The people who live in that area remember each area then look for the house and rent the one you like remember each city and town changes the price, do not pay more because over time you only harm yourself and you will harm others because the People who rent increase their rents however they want, I pay $1,800 pesos MX. I live in Moroleón Gto. In Mexico it is frowned upon if you pay more than what things are usually worth, don't be embarrassed, the people are mostly very friendly and if you don't act like a local you will be rejected because you generate price increases and people have to leave. the surroundings of that community and adapt to being in Mexico. Mexico will not suit you if you like quiet places, they exist, you just have to ask, greetings...

Just checked it's a UPF protection jacket named "Sejuani". I got it from amazon. It's pretty breathable too. 👍

If you want to go to El Estado de México, try to be on cities such as Valle de Bravo, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Toluca. If you want to go to other nice cities, of the Estado de México, they are beautiful, however, some started to be unsafe, even for nationals. Some of them are surrounded Mexico city, and since they are the outskirts, it is very unsafe.I will go during June, July, August, September. In the mornings, it is very chilly, until 8 or 9, then beautiful weather. After 7 starts to be chilly again, mostly if you go to Tonatico, Coatepec Harinas, Ixtapand de la Sal, due to the fact that they are close to the volcano, Nevado de Toluca.

Mostly the few homless in Mexico city are from Latin America that ran out of money and are offer by the city goverment temporarily jobs but don't take it .Real Mexicans don't ask for a handout unless they are elderly ,where now with our new president ( AMLO ) has stop . But many think if you see a homeless that looks Mexican are but its not true I happen to be in a outside restaurant and one person came up to me asking for money without asking I new by his accent he wasn't from mexico. Mexicans don't ask for money especially now our country is making a turnover for the better this coming June 2, where our new constitution takes affect that will completely wipe out corruption and drug carted ,its not happing now because the minority corrupt politicians are being pay by foreign governments newspapers local especially US the .NY. Times , Washington Post , financial Times , LA.Times, pay by big corporations to discrete our President but it won't work the people are very wise . Also few Americans know the true about CIA, Humane Rights , Courts of appeals had in Mexican politics and how they were runing drug cartels from the American embassy and the CIA. had control of Bentio Jurez airport for shipments of drugs but no longer our president kicked them out and the 6-corrupt ex-Mexican Presidents fled to Spain another corrupt country that 45, Spanish were in Mexico not paying any tax free plu the US.companies that were more. I guarantee Americans will never find out because your two party system Republicans' & Democrats are united as one just like our two Party the Pri and Pan united together making the Mexican people think they were different. Also how the youngest American Ecuadorian president born in Miami, Florida order by US .to attack the Mexican embassy to get ex-President because elections were right behind and the US.couldn't afford having a lefest president like ( AMLO ) and stop the harvest of opium flower. I hope by next month newspapers would stop smearing our President as drug- eddict. womeniser , Dictator. Also nobody mentioned our president outlawing Marijuana planting and selling ,no racism, classism, homosexualty ,everyone is the same. Bing is first Mexican.
