I still remember the feel in the hall that night. Everything was very mysterious and dark. Remember it was 1973. No Internet. We got our info from magazines like Circus, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone. I was there the 29th, the 3rd night. Amazing show. Still remember Plant's vocal (No Quarter) echoing thru MSG, and Bonham's Gong becoming a ring of fire at the end of Whole Lotta Love. 16 years old getting our minds blown. Good Times.

Another incredible episode JCM.. This is the one I'd been waiting for. I wasn't sure what it was going to reveal. I was so relieved to find, contrary to belief, that there were NO guitar overdubs. Just guitar edits, which is absolutely fine as every note was played live over those 3 nights.... Absolutely agree regards NQ solo - Jimmy's finest ever and probably one of the greatest guitar solos by any guitarist imho. It's eloquent, lyrical and steeped with emotion and with that guitar tone was just absolute perfection and beauty. It should never, never have been edited....

There is a brief, a milimetric overdub guitar layers in Rock and Roll but it's so minimal i did not include it here. Completely the original Album release version of No Quarter is in my opinion the best guitar solo ever. I don't usually pick favorites of things because there is so much great stuff out there, but that solo is absolutely amazing from start to finish. Dorian Mode at it's finest. I remember playing along with it years ago and they were playing notes that i was wondering how they fit.

Listening to Led Zeppelin from their first album onward, but becoming a rabid fan after witnessing their live performance at the San Diego Sports Arena on March 10, 1975… I read everything I could get my hands on about the band and practically memorized every solo on TSRTS. Like you, I was absolutely shocked and dismayed that they screwed with the solo in No Quarter. I had that solo isolated on numerous Maxell UDXLII cassette tapes and then later on CDR’s because I think it was his best solo on the double live album. There are other edits Page could’ve done without touching that masterpiece of a guitar solo. In fact, the opening “statement“ to his No Quarter guitar solo is just freaking genius… Why he would cut that out makes no sense at all. Thank you for these wonderful presentations, JCM.

Coming of age in the 1980s I snuck out with friends to watch the midnight movie of TSRTS. Having heard the album a lot I fell in love with SIBLY from the movie which was left off the original double album. I went out and rented TSRTS and hooked up the surround sound (a daunting task in 1984) and taped it for my boombox pleasure.

I did the same exact thing with all of the songs from the film. A few years later used early audio software to create my own playlists with the film audio of all the songs. I made my own CDs as well.

I ran the audio out from our VCR into my stereo and made cassettes of the full audio from the movie. SIBLY was the greatest thing I ever heard at that point and couldn't believe they left it off the soundtrack. I was really upset when the expanded soundtrack came out and they cut out the one bum note in Jimmy's intro solo. For over 20 years I'd been hearing that song warts and all and that's exactly how I want it lol.

I snuck a portable cassette recorder into one of the midnight screenings just to record “Since I’ve Been Loving You” because it hadn’t been released on VHS yet and there was nowhere else to get it. I still have that cassette copy today.

I listened to the remastered TSRTS over my last couple of runs. As much as I loved the original soundtrack I am glad the reissues have missing tunes such as Celebration Day, Since I've Been Loving You, Misty Mountain Hop, Over The Hills and Far Away, and Heartbreaker. These fit nicely with the original songs on the soundtrack. In my opinion, this is 'Peak Zeppelin' and one of THE greatest live albums ever! Thanks for these episodes Juan. These really take me back and let me re-live Zeppelin in all their early 70's glory 🤩

That "half cocked" wah pedal sound, was and still is, a common way to get that British tone, in conjunction with a Marshall Plexi. Mick Ronson, Micheal Schenker and many others I cant think of right now have had in their trick bag forever. MAN great series you have compiled. Keep it coming!

Wow just a few seconds into Rock and Roll and I distinctly remember Bonzo shouting "okay let's GO".... and not "alright let's go"!. Fascinating! I also remember back in the early 80's buying the double live vinyl album and compared to the film,Robert's voice sounded far richer and deeper on vinyl. Granted, TV sets weren't as great back in the 80's (maybe ours had been thrown in the pool 😂) but it was noticeable! And also, for the first part of Jimmy's rock and roll solo, I distinctly remember him using a volume pedal to increase the volume for a couple of notes. Now I can't find it, my original VHS tape broke years ago! You Sir are worthy of a PhD yourself ❤. Later today I am joining 999 fellow musicians to perform some Linkin Park songs so this is a great way to ease into the day. I thank you. You might be thinking 1,000 musicians? I remember when a local radio station (96 Rock FM in Atlanta) was playing the soundtrack songs from The Song Remains the Same movie back in 80's and early 90's. Check this out! There was only two Atlanta radio stations that played Led Zeppelin's music: 96 Rock and this Classic Rock station that was also on FM. The oldies stations, on the other hand, hardly played Led Zeppelin. I don't know any oldies station that played Led Zeppelin except for one from SiriusXM; however, someone had to request the DJ to play "Stairway to Heaven." Another thing, 96 Rock played Led Zeppelin's 1980 version of "Train Kept A Rollin" live from Frankfurt, Germany, and that was the best version of that song because it was full of energy and had that early 70's Led Zeppelin sound. Even they played 1971 live concert on BBC from Led Zeppelin, and that was way before Jimmy Page decided to released "Complete BBC Sessions" album in 1997. Lastly, 96 Rock had a weekly Midnight segment for Led Zeppelin called the "Zep Set." and they played Led Zeppelin songs for half an hour. I used to record Led Zeppelin's songs off the radio when I was a kid! 😄

I just listened to the bootleg from MSG 29th the 3rd night. The celebration solo sounds like the soundtrack of movie. Jimmy was unbelievable at this point of his playing & tone. I’ve never heard that solo on any other bootleg recordings. That answered a question I had for 40 years!!!

Hi Jose, I remember buying a special issue of the British magazine *Q* at a Barnes & Noble bookstore at one of my local shopping malls in the early 2000s. The issue was ENTIRELY devoted to Led Zeppelin. This Special Edition went into great detail about the aesthetics, artists, artwork, concepts, colour printing and processing techniques, and obscure, secret and esoteric meanings of the artwork on (and in) each and every Led Zeppelin album cover. It also included factual, historical and other technical information. Up until that point in time, no other magazine ever offered this amount of overwhelming and tremendously detailed knowledge and enlightenment. Though the music was assessed, critiqued and discussed to a fair degree, the album cover artwork was the main feature. I learned so much (then-new-to-me) information about my favourite albums! The section that covered *THE SOUNDTRACK FROM THE FILM THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME* said: [and I’m paraphrasing here] - Due to his brilliance, credit and praise must be given to Eddie Kramer - for his engineering expertise and reputation for capturing the very best electric guitar sounds on tape. [This next quote is verbatim]: ‘The sound is so clean, you can wipe a baby’s behind with it.’ LOL! 🎸🥁🎹🎤🧼🫧🚿🎚🎛🎚🔊🎶👶🏼

The cut on "No Quarter" is the best thing Zep cut. It's my favorite jam. Bonham-Page-JPJ are playing almost independently when Jimmy is playing rhythm, but they're so together and tight. The solo is my favorite live one, and I can only listen to the uncut version... It wasn't until 15 years ago where I finally heard the album version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", but I didn't consider a different version from "The Echoes of Pink Floyd" box set, and discovered that being Pink Floyd's worst cut -- the best part of the guitar solo - the harmonizer -- it's too great.

@25:50, an extra AH was removed? Who knew? Oh wait you did. Once I hit puberty there was really only one thing on the planet I cared about and it was Zeppelin and it lasted for years. I'm talking the ONLY albums I listened to and owned was the Led Zeppelin discography up to Coda. I saw them in concert in 1977 at the Oakland Coliseum then I branched out and let the rest of the music in. I know The Song Remains the Same both movie and the soundtrack by heart so I find this extremely interesting and appreciated. 🙈

These 3 shows by far is Zeppelin at thier best! The people in new york were very lucky to be there! The performances were extraordinary with all 4 members at thier best! Incredible improvising and its simply magical! I mean from rock n roll to tsrts into the rain song and no quarter, stairway dazed and confused and whole lotta love absolutely phenomenal every fukin note and the blistering since ive been loving you!!! The most amazing note for note solo in the stairway jam is beyond measure brilliant! Bonham killed it on md and showed why he is considered one of the best ever!!! The 77 shows at the forum in LA were horrible loud and distorted! Nothing close to 73! Page and plant with Michael Lee on drums was filmed in 95 in Irvine ca and those concerts were excellent far better than the 77 disaster! Luxky to have tsrts and page and plant concerts on DVD! And all the studio brilliance, all 10 albums! Each album so different ,so many great songs on each with hot dog being thier worst tune ever released along with down by the seaside! Not bad for 10 albums where 90 percent of their songs are incredible!!! I feel fortunate born in 63 to really be exposed to thier music when I was 10 years old! Zep 4 really kicked my ass, one of the finest rock albums ever!!! Then the release of presence and the masterful physical graffiti! Great time to grow up! Thanks again José! The No Quarter question, why they did it on the 2007 release? It is important to notice that also in the Movie there was this cut. So the soundtrack audio was now the same as in the movie. Also the end of the guitarsolo is different now. But the did not do the same with The Rainsong. In the movie there is also a cut in the beginning of the rock part, but they did not change it on the 2007 version. The question remains why? Also why did they do it in the movie? We have to ask Jimmy, that he allowed to cut away one of the best guitar work he has done! Hopefully this will be fixed in the new version of The Song Remains the Same we can have in 2024! I heard, that for LZ to get permission to release and remaster the songs for the 2007 release, that the filmmaker or someone, requires that the music on the CD, match the music in the movie. At least us fans finally got the music on CD that we deserved to have in 1976... SIBLY OTHAFA HB etc

Went by so fast, but I swore I almost heard Bonzo play the same fill in his solo on the tympani, that sounds like the beginning fill to Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag. Then again, I hear all sorts of weird things when I hear them in other places. And even more strangely when they seem to have years between them. I never owned the new remaster. But that's crazy he chopped the solo out. But I'm sure I would have also been the same in the wtf department. And i so want that Atlantic pressing of Physical Graffiti. Many live albums were cobbled together from multiple shows. The Song Remains The Same is still my favorite live Zeppelin album. Even Delicate Sound of Thunder had multiple edits. Money had on the original album four edits about 2 minutes cut (Tim Renwick’s guitar solo after Guy Pratt’s bass solo, David Gilmour’s guitar and Scott Page’s sax dual solos, half of Richard Wright’s keyboard solo and half of Jon Carin’s organ solo was excised) and on the remaster there was six cuts the aforementioned and Guy’s bass solo was and the female acapella section was removed and placed into the reggae section. The original Comfortably Numb was shorter by 2 minutes but mostly restored sans part of Gilmour’s delayed whammy bar execution was trimmed. Queen Rock Montreal was a combination of the two Montreal performances and even some songs were from both nights. Brian May’s guitar solo was mostly from night one with a section of night two added. Night two had Freddie wearing shorts for the encore while Night One had him in jeans the whole encore with Jailhouse Rock done in a proto-thrash version. Another phenomenal live album released in 1976 was J Geils Band Blow Your Face Out. In fact was recorded in my state’s home capital of Boston in November 1975 (two months before I was born in January 1976). 1976 was a great year for Rock and Roll albums and I am biased as I was born 24 days into 1976 and a week after Frampton Comes Alive was released and that was all live except for part of the first verse of Something’s Happening, the rhythm guitar on Show Me the Way and the piano on I Wanna Go to the Sun which were fixed at Electric Lady Studios but the solos, drums, talkbox, bass guitar and rest of the vocals, guitars and other keyboards were all live. I got crucified by KISS fans when I stand by my statement that PULSE, The Song Remains the Same, Seconds Out, Exit…Stage Left and Live After Death are my Five Favorite Live Albums.

Born in '69 so i missed out on Zeppelin's heyday but around '79/80 i cut my Zeppelin teeth on the original '76 release when i discovered my stepdads record collection. He also had Physical Graffiti. Next thing i know im becoming a Led freak, buying all the albums, wall to wall nearly all Zeppelin posters, tapestries, bought buttons, books, bootlegs, you name it. At one point had all albums on vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and several 8-tracks. As far as TSRTS, Overall i like the original release best, its solid and not choppy sounding, but i often listen to the more current versions for the better sound.

Then an older brother said okay you like that, check out the White Album and Who’s Next. That’s how one grows up with rock as their religion.

Hi José! After you started this series about TSRTS, I reread “Light & Shade: conversations with Jimmy Page” by Brad Tolinski, an excellent book, curious, fun and interesting. Jimmy talks about the movie, and the “patches” that were inserted (I always wondered about Jones’ weird wig and why Jimmy has long or short hair in several scenes)… I haven’t rewatched the movie yet, I was waiting for your insights on it, I’m sure many things will become clearer after this, your research is valuable. And every time I see a pic of Jimmy with his daughter Scarlet, or Scarlet herself now an adult, I remember that he said he took the little one to see the movie, and in the hermit scene, everyone was silent and all you could hear was the child’s voice shouting “it’s not daddy! it’s not daddy!” 😂 thanks again for the great episode, take care, see ya! 👍😊

I miss the whistle from someone in the crowd during Stairway after Robert says: "and my spirit is crying for leaving." It was edited out in later remasters. Fans of the group who grew up listening to the original soundtrack from back in the day became so used to hearing it that years later during Live Aid and the 1988 Atlantic Records reunions you can hear someone in the crowd whistle because it became so engrained in our minds that it should still be in there. When I hear newer remasters and it's gone, it sounds like something is missing.

About 12 years ago FANDANGO in the US played a concert film comprised of footage from TSRTS not used. Just concert, not anything else. It was very good. They said it will never be released, this was a one night only event. It played on a huge IMAX screen, the sound and visuals were HD and was awesome.

The pic of Jimmy w raised right arm next to the drum riser is Olympia Sta., Detroit ‘75. It is during Black Dog - at the end of the famous riff and at the beginning of any given verse by Robert, Jimmy would strike this pose, all the while depressing an open A chord, which makes perfect sense. There’s a bit of 8mm footage from this Detroit concert and it includes Black Dog and we see Jimmy strike this pose. Neal Preston could’ve very well been in the photographer pit at this gig because he tagged along with Zeppelin in early ‘75. Check out that footage and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Now, I’ve known for years that the “Soundtrack release” was a giant puzzle of parts and later put together by Page. It’s nice though to see/hear JCM’s disassembly then reassembly of it all right before my eyes. Back in the eighties and nineties we didn’t have KZbin remember. We had Maxell cassette tapes and turntables. All live releases need cleaning up in a studio but when it comes to Zeppelin and its founder and clever guitarist, nothing was easy. Everything had to be top standard! Thank you Jose for this analysis.

Thanks JCM. This whole series was fantastic. One small edit that always stood out to me was on Stairway, not sure if you addressed it, sorry if I missed it. On the original, when Robert goes into his “Ooohh baby baby baby darlin” ad lib, it always sounded like there were two voices overlapping each other for a brief moment. When I was younger I thought it might have been an echo or an artifact of the acoustics in MSG. This anomaly is not present in the remaster however, so I’m guessing that what I hear on the 1976 version it due to some splicing in another vocal from another night. But it was always the part that jumped out at me all these years. It doesn’t in any way detract from the song though, and added to the mystique of the album. The original 1976 TSRTS album is probably the most important album in my personal musical development. If I had only one album to have on a desert island, this would be it.

Fantastic summary to an incredible series Jose, you’re research is impeccable. Filled in many gaps for me. I mentioned Shepperton to Jimmy via his web site many years ago. He has never tried to cover up the sessions. I wonder if he still has the recordings they made? I don’t think it was all mimed? Roberts vocals were a big issue as you’ve picked up on. At Electric Magic in 1971 at Wembley the sound was awful, my mate was in attendance. For me TSRTS is missing the acoustic set, a crucial part of what Zeppelin were about. Bron Yr Stomp was one of the highlights at Earls Court. The film missed the essence of Zeppelin for me. I saw it at Tottenham Court Road the week of the premiere loved it but felt it was a shadow of how good they really were in 1975. Hats off to you JCM, love the content 👍✌️🎶

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Yeah I got familiar with them in my late 30’s when Sirius started the Grateful Dead channel in 2007. I learned a lot from that. They recorded many of their shows themselves which is why many bootlegs are soundboards. They play them on that Sirius channel. The audience recordings are circulated bc of the crowd reaction sounds. They are all now online in places like Internet Archive. Jerry Garcia is one of my favorite guitarists and singers bc he was a student of all musical styles. His guitar tone is so pitch perfect. A master melodic improvisational player.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Oh you want a roadmap starting point? I got you. Start with their album “American Beauty.” Came out in 1970 or so. This happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. It was a departure from the 60’s psychedelia. This album is roots country-flavored (at times) rock. The tunes are catchy, the vocals and harmonies resonate with your soul, the lyrics are at times poignant (largely by lyricist Robert Hunter). Highlights include “Box of Rain,” “Candyman” and “Brokedown Palace.” However, the entire album is a masterpiece of American rock.

"Dazed & Confused" on the 2007 vinyl is actually a little shorter than any other version. Because the song is split over 2 sides, the fade out & fade back in actually repeats itself slightly, but there's certain bits that are different. On 2007 CD, it's 29:18. The 2007 vinyl, over 2 sides, is 27:54 combined.... 19:57 & 8:57 added together.

I have one idea for a future deep dive, maybe a look into the two last Zep shows in the US, the day on the green and the whole backstage assault, arrests, ets. Paul i like the idea of a two part series on Oakland 1977. I read the articled by LedZepNews and he even got contacted by a private party to Stop his research. The political and money theories behind the incident are clear to me but legally i wouldn"t risk myself sharing my thoughts. Now as a Concert and Time/Place i can certainly provide a retrospective. The other alternative Paul is of course go Deep and Share this video as a Patreon exclusive and maybe this is the way to do it! 4800 views at the moment is good but ironically lower than Episode 1 and 2 which did better. I remember at the time Plant and Page haggling over vocal edits, Plant pretty much wanted all of his ad libs including "Does anyone remember laughter?" from Stairway. Page adamantly refused but did agree to a few "Push,Push,Push and a few others to be edited out.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Eddie Kramer (recorded and mixed the original 1976 release) at a Waves plugin event in Los Angeles shortly after the 2007 reissue came out. I expressed my disappointment about all the quirky edits on the new version and he totally agreed. When I asked why he didn’t remix the reissue, that’s when he dropped the big bombshell on me. Apparently, he had remixed it in 5.1 surround and thought it sounded pretty damn good - but for some reason the “powers that be” decided to go with the Kevin Shirley remix. Oooh, it makes me wonder. 🤔
