Hi JC, thanks so much for all your hard work keeping their legacy alive. I was with a friend in Kirland, a small suburb of Seattle USA years ago, no sure what exact year, but we had just parked my truck at the marina there and a guy and his girl walked right in front of us on the sidewalk. I looked closer and I said to my friend, dude, is that Jimmy Page? It was him! My stupid friend got out and started yelling, Jimmy, Jimmy!! I was like, shut the fu..ck up man, it was him as he turned and then they rushed up to the main street and jumped in a limo. I was so pissed off, if not for my friend being such a jackass, i probably would have met him and had a nice quiet chat.....

I can't get over all the archival film and photos and promotional history you have! I did make a friendly parody of my favorite scene in The Song Remains the Same last summer. I did it off the top of my head forgetting to change to my British accent. I wanted to do it over but my boyfriend said "Don't change it". kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXrNdaKsa8-Wn6c I made a quick video of the scene in TSRTS film when the band lands in Pittsburgh (I assumed it was NYC). I didn't understand why the band needed a motorcade. Everyone knew they were coming but then I realized that's probably the reason why they used a motorcade. Maybe they wanted to show a little bit of flash too...

Plants "later voice" was definitely better tuned in than his younger days. But it's just the natural progression of a band as they continue to evolve. The thing was, they were so talented from the first rehearsal it was only a matter of time before their rise to the pinnacle of rock and roll was achieved. Somehow I knew it from the first time I heard them... I was in second grade.... I took the first LP into school and told everyone that LED ZEPPELIN was going to be the GREATEST BAND EVER...
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories6 күн бұрын
I much rather listen to Robert Plant 1973 than 1969. In the studio, no problem, but live shows, you feel he was trying to come terms with his POWER. That and groupies getting pregnant just by looking at him!

I just can’t believe between this and 75 they did Dazed, Stairway, and Moby right in a row. Bonham’s stamina is insane. Factor in 77 with Achilles before Stairway, plus a drum solo nearly twice as long as 73... guys legs were rubber.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
Haha Rubber. I like that description. Yeah...to think he could deliver night after night is mindblowing. By 1980 though his body was resenting the lack of preparation. He needed a personal trainer and things that back then were NOT discussed. He was the engine of Led Zeppelin. Thank you so much for watching :)
@mattbacon285 Жыл бұрын
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories good insight. Love how you mentioned Plant's "new voice" helping inspire the band to write around it. I think the smaller crowd size and longer itinerary is part of the reason for the contrast between Euro 73 and the US tour coming off a bit more "corporate." One tinyyyyyy suggestion - could you let the music and bootleg clips roll longer? You basically make this content for hardcore fans, and I don't think any of us are going to fast forward if the concert excerpts are longer! If you need zep-themed help in the background music too, hit me up! I've got a zeppelin themed classical piece!

It is interesting how, to this day, a lot of people don't realize that Robert has not been able to sing like the early days since 73. Let alone being able to do it in any Zeppelin reunion. I saw them in 73. and Robert was just not up to singing any of the old stuff. Everything was rephrased and dropped to a lower register. At the time I was extremely disappointed. your videos and thorough research put great perspective on this. The led Zeppelin catalog is an incredible body of work. Robert was so young when he did that early stuff. Singing up in that range on record and then touring and hammering those vocal cords was bound to cause damage. Great job on these videos I'm really enjoying them. Thank you

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic. There was a user here who said i was disrespecting Plant or being too hard on him but that wasn't my intention. The way you describe it is exactly the kind of thought i wanted to bring to the table. You are so lucky you saw then in 73 as the instrumentalists Page, Jones and Bonham were really on fire. Robert's body of work by 73 was impressive and yes, damage was caused. I appreciate your comment very much! Stay tuned for more, new videos are on the way :)

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I never thought you disrespected Plant at all. You said his style and register had to change to accommodate the changes in his vocal chords. The band musicians molded around it perfectly solidifying their musical dominance. It’s not better or worse. It’s just different.

Yes as they say in Corporate America "change is inevitable how we adapt makes us stronger" but i mean it. Robert did a very good job with his new ways . It speaks a lot about their brotherhood that the band stepped up on the instrumentals!

If you watch Jimmy Page and his early live performances, you can see that, from his stage presence and level of showmanship, he was somewhat withdrawn and low-key, with his face hidden under his long hair and Robert seemed to be the visual focus of the band - but starting in 72 or 73 you can see how Page displayed increasing confidence as a frontman and displayed tremendous physicality in his stage presence. Just watch TSRTS and you can see him really shine under the spotlight; what a gifted and talented man!!

Nice work. I visited the causeway in 1999 and was able to recreate the artwork on HOTH back home with a very near appearance from the photos I took. Using photoshop and a very detailed selection of my photos I was able to capture what I felt was as close to the original pictures used by Storm (or the other people at Hipgnosis) by getting as near to the places each pic might’ve been taken from. The more distant pic for the inside was always off because I didn’t want to be standing in the water. Perhaps it might’ve been a 50mm lens or something I may not have had in my kit. I’ll never now. But seeing the opening imagery really brought me back to seeing it with my own eyes.

You can't overstate how incredible this series is. Same goes for this album, and this band. The album contains 3 of my top 10 Zep songs with The Rain Song, No Quarter, and Over The Hills And Far Away. Is there another band that had the relationship with their manager that they had ? They knew he put their interest first and it allowed them to just write the greatest rock n roll songs and then perform them live. I cringe when I read people saying they can't recreate their music live as it is on records. I don't know, if you ask me I don't want it exact to the album. No fun in that. But in my opinion, no band has done more for rock n roll in only 10 years than Led Zeppelin has. Every band after them took something from them, and if they say no.....they need look a little better at themselves. My friend....you knocked this 3 part Documentary on this album out of the park. I learned more about my favorite rock band , and confirmed a few things I've learned along the way. Thank you for allowing us come along with you on this journey. I for one truly appreciate your gift. Peace my friend.

After 1973 it was a case of "The law of diminishing returns." No one stays at the top forever, nor can continue to operate at peak performance and efficiency over any extended period of time.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
Yes, post 1973 is strange. I believe the 1975 Tour was the less impressive of their concert runs till 1980 for many reasons.
@GINKBB Жыл бұрын
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories while they had their moments in 75-77, it was painfully obvious, I think even more so to guitar players who devoted and studied and practiced LZ tunes, that Page was "stiffer" and not nearly as "nimble" on the fretboard...granted he "broke a finger" allegedly, but it was more than that. To me the 75 tour just "sounds" like far too much "coke"...and the 77 tour is WAY too much booze and heroin. I mean objective listeners can not deny the substantial demise of their musicality. The 77 "noise" solos are the sound of a heroin addict who hasn't practiced and frankly can no longer deliver. LOVE your documentaries!!!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
Yes GINKBB i agree on all counts. It will be hard for me to cover the drug part of their story. I will remain respectful and just suggest this without saying it directly. Working on new scripts right now! Btw Page did grew stronger as a rhythm player ironically!
@GINKBB Жыл бұрын
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I applaud your journalistic integrity, as Page, tho never denying "drug use" and even calling it "an important part" of his and the bands history, has certainly never gone on the record about; what "exactly" and how much of "whatever" he had or, continues to do. Unlike say the much publicized and discussed drug use of Keith Richards, Clapton, Pete Townshend, Joe Perry, Steven Tyler etc etc etc. I mean, any discerning player and listener "knows" what's up. Again, thank you, great work, and as an aside, I really admire your guitar playing. The discipline necessary to reach your level, and to play and learn things "note for note" is admirable. Kudos.

Excellent analysis once again Jose. The European swing through in Mar. of ‘73 was something of definite special significance. So many years back and when I heard the Hamburg, Ger. Dazed, I couldn’t believe my ears. Bonzo really did have Jimmy’s back, via his enormous “guitar ears.” The musical improvisations were breathtaking to say the least. They were wielding their art in a very powerful and convincing way here. The audiences loved it too. About the Bob Gruen Starship 1 famous photo: I’m referring to the poster and not the one w Jimmy in stage clothing. It was taken at Newark Intnl. Airport in NJ and not Pitts. That’s about all I can give you on that. Another factor on Mr. Jones: by the end of the euro ‘73 tour, the France shows, he acquired a Fender “Bass V” and used it for the entire first US leg. This was the world’s first five string bass guitar. It’s highlight (or…non-highlight by today’s standards,) is that it featured a high, open C string under G instead of the now low B over E. It’s neck was short scale but the high C rendered it then full scale by making up for any high notes available down low and without having to reach up to the high register. God, does that make any sense? The Bass V was brainstormed up by newly CBS acquired Fender Musical Instruments as Leo Fender sold it to them in Jan. ‘65. He stayed on as consultant but was unhappy with the new zealots in charge and left in the early seventies to start his new venture: the Music Man Stingray 1 guitar and Stingray Bass. Amps too! The “Bass V” was released in ‘65 and ground to a halt in ‘72. Evidently it just never caught on with site reader’s and students alike so it was then discontinued. After the LA 6-3-73 make-up date, this bass guitar never was seen again with Jones. Although he not surprisingly championed the instrument (check out Song Remains from the Mobile ‘73 SB tape for a clear example of this) he retired it and went back the the famed ‘62 Jazz Bass for all of the July dates. It’s pickups are the same type that went into Fender Mustang Basses. The “button pickup” it’s called. It’s quite punchy and unique sounding…but…it cannot compete ever with Leo’s flagship Jazz Bass IMO. Once again Jose, I enjoyed this final segment. I’m guessing something about the ‘75 tour is in the works. It was quite the abbreviated tour as Robert’s car acc. snubbed out any fall dates - and they simply were making too much money by ‘75 and had to leave England. Until next time my friend. Thank you for your incredible efforts here. I love it.

Newark makes sense, so is that arriving for the first MSG SHOW? I am so glad you brought the FENDER BASS V topic, i was going to include this but then i had to go deep into analyzing the sonic part of it. This i will do on a future episode of just this tour, since it's my personal favorite i had to restraint the fanboy there for a sec lol, had i not done that, episode 3 would have been 3 hours long lol. The Bass V was definitely ugly looking and i can tell why Jones didn't like it. Something about 75 is in the works yes...good call hehe. But before that i will premiere a special 2 part series on another topic btw, hope you enjoy! As always, thank you for your support LB! Have a great week!
@luvbasses5487 Жыл бұрын
Im not exactly certain as I don’t know the distance between Newark, NJ and midtown Manhattan. Maybe they jumped from Pittsburgh to Newark, then LaGuardia for the 27th opener. The Bass V was as ugly as a ducks’ ass. Very awkward looking bass, but it sounds pretty damn good. The few shows in France and all the US dates in May-early June featured Jones with this bass. I like the block/bound necks on them but the first year models got dot markers and not block inlays. The Fender Jazz Bass got these cosmetic upgrades by mid ‘66 as well. On a poorly lit stage however, the binding with their black-dot side markers are a huge help...so you can always see your position. I love how you brought up Jimmy’s “tuxedo loafer” stage shoes too. They fit right in. What a class act how he looked during these years. It’s almost fitting to say that after the ‘73 tour, it was the end of an era. It was like Zeppelin pt. 1. From ‘75 onwards they “sounded” different. Jimmy’s clean and nasal sounding guitar sound in ‘75 is a subject that caused debate and conversations that likely went on well into the wee hours in guitar-nerd circles I’d bet! The ‘73 tour for me was their crown 💎. By ‘75 they were physically depleted to some extent. I’ll stop here! Again, thank u for dealing with my long winded replies Jose. You’re the best!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
I will do a mini episode on this bass alone. Its fascinating, thanks for this! Quick question do you think he used it all the way thru the gig or just some songs? I believe 1973 was perfect indeed. I second your Physically Depleted line...wow, almost like the album should have been called like that. 75 shows bother me as they Look the part but Page and Plant do not you know? And yes Jimmy's tone there...ugh...why Jimmy...why! Jaja. For me part 3 Zeppelin was 1979-1980 but cut short :(
@luvbasses5487 Жыл бұрын
I often wonder this myself - and I’m only the bass hack who isn’t supposed to notice this stuff. But when you listen to how very slick his playing was during the span of ‘73, then jump to ‘75, that slickness was all but absent. The Seattle ‘73 tape exhibits the ‘73 Zeppelin concert experience perfectly. Jimmy all but carries the entire band - melodically speaking - on his shoulders for the entire show. Those taping bandits walked away with the most legendary Zeppelin show. Yet in ‘75 Jimmy did something to his amps. What it was I don’t know. New tubes? Different 100W heads? I really don’t know but....by then cracks were showing in her hull for sure. One last thing: the opening gigs in July, the final leg, started in Chicago. Jones was using still the Bass V for these two gigs. By the Detroit affairs he was back on the ‘62 Jazz Bass and until the end of the tour. There are some good photos out there from Chicago Stadium and you’ll see clearly John with that ugly duckling bass five!

I need to carefully revisit the 73 shows. Actually i wanted to do a show by show review for Houses Episode 3 but then thought this will be 2 hours long stop! Ny first Zepp boot experience was Seattle July 17th 1973, that show is a GEM. Dazed is out of this world. I love playing 73 versions with cover bands, Page had a very unique vision in this time period. He was always battling afterwards. I think in 75' what happened is he cut down the gain to augment the volume and power but the problem is his playing was not clean on stage cause he got Nervous, very nervous. Jimmy suffered from it and that is why the drinking, etc. He was a fragile figure who dealt with a lot indeed. His energy and force on the guitar was his alter ego that needes to warm up to deliver.

Excellent. Your literary voice gets stronger, more layered, surprising, insightful, puzzling (as in assembling a tapestry of ideas and themes and histories and emotions...in every paragraph, every sentence) and fluid by the video. I think...you’re a writer first. As many artists are. I think you’re dangerously close, and confidently fearless enough to move to Zep’s darkest outpost: not the satanism...the underage passenger. It’s the final piece, one that needs to be put on record, for all time. This, JCM...will seal your legacy as the true master of this realm.

This comment means a lot Miles, thank you so much! I really enjoy writing the script, got me there, it's my favorite part of the process. As far as dangerously close to those dark outposts, since i work with the official and confirmed sources of information, we'll see how the big picture looks first. If there's a door to be explored i think the material itself will lead me there or maybe it will give me the tools to tackle other band's as well. Trust me....i've spent afternoons thinking about theories and things that seem apparent, others i just feel my gut telling me what some truths could be. I look forward to cover their entire discography and explore the live shows in depth as well as establish some what ifs that i think are relevant inside this Zeppelin fever. I’m officially hooked on these. At 8 years old (1980) I was a Beach Boys fan. By 10 I was into the Beatles By 12-13 it was the Stones then Hendrix By 14-15 it was Zeppelin Now I’m 50 and still stuck on Zeppelin. I’ve been into a wide range of artists from Alice In Chains to Waylon Jennings. Over the years I’ve delved into The Who, Sabbath, all 3 Hank Williams (particularly 3), The Black Keys, White Stripes, Lenny Kravitz, STP and so on, but it’s always been Zeppelin. #2 (my second favorite is miles below and always changing). I guess I’m writing this after rewatching the beginning of the first ITTOD video where JC describes the events leading to his love for LZ. My dad ordered I & II cds in about 1987. When everyone at my school was into Motley Crue and RUN-DMC I was considered weird for listening to LZ. I could totally relate when JC mentioned his peers liking Linkin Park. From there I ended up with IV then PG. Then HOTH, III, Presence and lastly ITTOD. Well lastly CODA. I was stuck on the first 6 albums for years before giving the last 3 more attention. I LOVE these series and I look forward to more in the future. These are BY FAR the best LZ documentation ever done !!

OMG the man himself, you are one of the greatest contributors to the Zepp community ever. I salute you sir! Interesting Page claims to get the outfit in June 73. So this means they flew back home and waited? Why wouldn't he wear it on their first show in July. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Appreciate the kind words, my friend, and kudos to your hard work as well! I'm unsure what the exact situation would be - Jimmy claims June 73 (but he is notoriously inaccurate on dates) but for sure the first time he wears the jacket on stage is in Baltimore. I've watched the entire series JCM, and you made a lot of great observations, comments and deductions. But one stands out very directly to me - the one about obtaining early bootlegs and being "put off by Plant's high end screaming." I bought LZ II, the untitled 4th album, Graffiti, LZ1, LZIII and HOTH in that order. Me and my fellow Zep Heads all thought that the sped-up vocals on HOTH were just a studio gimmick that didn't work. Then the news about the throat issues/operation hit the rock mags a year of two later. Then I got a few Zep vinyl boots and really started collecting Zep boots when CDs came out. During all that, I too was "put off by his high end screaming" all the time.

Hi Jose! As always, impeccable work! Makes me wonder how many hours of research and insane work this takes... and also the satisfaction you feel seeing the end result. I'm learning so much about Zeppelin, surely this rockstar life must be very tiring, I think they have more flight hours than a veteran commercial pilot. Many think that these guys' life was one continuous party, drinks, drugs, women, lots of money, forgetting the hard side, away from families, spending more time in hotels than at home. Loved your analysis of Plant's vocal issues and how the band dealt with it, very smart move. I also loved the Variations On 1972 theme at the beginning, I remember seeing you playing in some short videos, could you make a longer video, you are a great guitar player! Thanks for another lesson on Zeppelin! ❤️
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
That is a great line right there Marcia, "more flight hours than a veteran commercial pilot". Absolutely, they are overworked and so much movement takes a toll on the person's mental part as well. They were humans who like everybody else, was making a living and trying to balance the mayhem on the road too. Thank so much for watching these series, there will be a new series soon. Recording the theme song was a fun experience but i will tell you, i get a fraction of views for music only videos, i see the algorhythm here on KZbin actually promotes them less, so playing guitar alone has a limited reach. I will post more guitar videos in the near future! Like always, i appreciate your good vibes and support. Led Zeppelin really conquered the 70s, no question!

Awesome as usual! They should really release some of the 73 European tour shows. Maybe a series like Deep Purple is doing

Man! I just saw Purple's 1972 Archive release. I did not know about it. Saw 50 track thing in Spotify, i was like NO WAY! Glad they did. I still haven't finished it. I agree. Zepp should release stuff if they have it. Thank you very much for tuning in Matt!

Listening to "TSRTS soundtrack" as I normally would anyway, but watching this at my local. You definitely enhanced my Saturday day off experience 👍
