Sorry about the background music being a bit intrusive. You can put on the subtitles and turn down the sound if you find it too loud. I will be sure to keep it lower in future.

You can also < with camera on tripod, shoot several frames 10-20 open in PS with all frames in layers in one document. Select all the layers, go to layers and convert to a smart object. Then go to layers>Smart Object> stack mode> Minimum and they go away.

I use an intervalometer,they cost £10 -£15, shutter on bulb, time (the skies the limit) on the intervalometer, also great for time lapse photography.

Quite some time ago, I was patiently standing in Temple Boulevard in Paris having my boots cleaned. Apparently I messed up m. Daguerre's 7 minute time-exposure. I did apologize. 🙂
@NiftyFiftyPhotographers8 ай бұрын
Looks like you unintentionally became the star of a historic moment! Who would have thought that getting your boots cleaned could interfere with a time-exposure? I hope M. Daguerre forgave you for the unexpected blunder!

How DARE those other people intrude on our vacations! Oh well, great minds and people think alike and love the same things - beauty, life and living - so I guess we can't blame them too much!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It is often the case that popular venues are crowded and we cant all get there at 5:00am to avoid the people!

Thank you so much for this fascinating video and the "secrets" you have very kindly shared. This is the type of "heap big power" knowledge that separates the pros from the would be soes! I am looking forward to getting the Sony A7R5 shortly - or its next iteration - and was thrilled to hear that that was the camera you used, and it already has the bulb timing function you said is needed. Please continue with more eye-opening videos like this because? We inquiring minds, mon ami, want to know! LOL

Do you have any recommendations for the ND filters? I have a 10Stop and 6 stop ND filters from Lee Filter but I always get this pesky color cast. Granted you can neutralize it in post but it would be great to have filters that don’t generate a color cast. Thanks!
@NiftyFiftyPhotographers9 ай бұрын
My plan is to upgrade my filters to Formatt Hitech filters. I have been reading the e-book "From Basic to Fine Art Black and White Photography" by Julia Anna Gospodarou and Joel Tjintjelaar and they claim there is no color cast with the Formatt Hitech filters. You can get 10% off the cost if you use their discount code - here is a link www.juliaannagospodarou.com/gear-photography-deals/#photo-gear.

What ISO settings are you using on these really long exposures?
@NiftyFiftyPhotographers9 ай бұрын
That's a great question. Normally ISO100 sometimes I increase it to 400 if I find the exposure time is too long (e.g. 8mins+)

In most of your examples, you needed two shots and a little masking in Ps. In some cases, the long exposure doesn't work. If you try this on an entrance to the Underground when things are busy, you are likely to get a formless blob. Rather than a single long exposure, I would rather make shorter ones and blend later in Ps. It might be a simple blend might work, it might be I have to cut stuff out of some - people, dogs, donkeys.
@NiftyFiftyPhotographers8 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for dropping by and leaving your comment! I agree with you about the long exposure not always working in busy areas. It really does depend on the amount of people and whether they are moving or not, and if they are moving how fast they are walking. Shorter exposures and blending in Photoshop can definitely help in those situations. And hey, if we need to cut out some people, dogs, and donkeys, why not? It's all part of the creative process! There are other benefits to doing a long exposure over 4 minutes, it gives the photo a more mysterious and surreal atmosphere which can lend itself to a "fine art style". It's a personal choice of course.

This technique is sometimes working, sometimes not. Good for places where less people, then ND trick is working. But it's not work for places, where are people constantly doing selfies. Tried even in 40 min exposure with ND 100000 in blue hour, still not working out. Although, with true dedication, and with lots of pictures people can be averaged out with proper stacking methods.

2 minute exposure. There you go, no need for a video.
@NiftyFiftyPhotographers9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. That may well work in many cases, and it's great if you can get away with it. But it does depend on how fast the people are moving or if they stand for a long time in one place. There are other benefits to doing a long exposure over 4 minutes, it gives the photo a more mysterious and surreal atmosphere which can lend itself to a "fine art style". It's a personal choice of course.
