The I-401 (I-400 class sub), along with the I-201 (I-201 class sub) and I-14 (I-13 class sub) Submarines, were captured at the Pacific war's end
and sailed to Hawaii, where US naval intelligence officers could plumb the ships' secrets.
They are three of five advanced Japanese subs the US sailed to Pearl Harbor after the war.
All were scuttled to avoid having to share the information with the Pacific war's
late-comer and co-claimant to such prizes, the former Soviet Union.

This Japanese sub has to be the most valuable and important WWII sub. It was far more advanced than all other subs at that time. I hope Japan or/and US salvage and restore it someday. I still don't see why we had to sink it. We could have moved it some place safe and made up some excuses to the russians.

Japan lost WWII because they just didn't have the resources to withstand a protracted turn of the war against them. As an island nation they had to import food, steel, textiles, gas: everything needed for an army or a people. The atom bombs aside, if they had the resources America had they might have just won the War of the Pacific. They certainly had the fighting spirit and the naval and army leadership necessary. They put up a Hell of a fight, so my grandfathers say.

Same for Germany. Japan and Germany had oil shortages throughout the whole war. It caused the Germans to strike for the Caucuses and the Japanese to strike in the East Indies.

It's a shame we had to scuttle them but I understand it had to be done. They were amazing pieces of engineering and seeing the remains of them on the ocean floor just gives me chills.

these waere some badass subs. id love to be able to build one of the i-15 kind...well another thing for my list of 'if i hit lotto' be hilarious to make one for Sea Shepherd. i would imagine the japanese would be rather peeved to see the own sub design used against them. plus the airplane would be quite helpful. would confuse em for a while if you dont let them see the sub but the plane folows them.

@NgJackal1990 To win a war is not completely depend on how high tech the weapons you have but, if you own a high tech weapons it is just make you possible to win a war.. Strategic is important

Dudes, the Japanese built some some the largest, most innovative, and most badass old-school subs ever seen. Their torpedos were never equalled during the war years But Japanese submarines were mis-used by a dogma that preached maintaining stealth, at all costs, and holding back until warships were in the sights. Lots and lots of cargo drove right past them. The US Navy on the other hand, sent it's subs mostly after cargo, but they would happily attack other targets of opportunity.

My Father Archie Belanger is in this film. He was aboard the USS Larson DD 830 and the Japanese I Boats. He and the Larson sank them.

@zabuza825 True, but the 105 was totally outperformed by the I-400, except in speed. Also, the I-400 had the ability to launch multiple strike capable planes, not one plane only capable of reconnaisance.

P.S. there is only 1 flying Seiran dive bomber left. You can see it in the flesh in the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Virginia, USA. There's so many other awesome aircraft there, too, it makes it worth the trip. The Japanese were and are very innovative, top-notch engineers when they put their minds to something.

We scuttled them and so on to keep the russians (still our allies, but the cold war was heating up slowly but surely) from asking to see them after we were done. what better excuse than to say we needed some target practice?
