I never knew of the I400 subs before my first introduction to Aircraft Carrier Subs. My first knowledge of the concept came courtesy of the game Supreme Commander 2 and the Atlantis Aircraft Carrier Submarine. Although, the Atlantis was much, much bigger, like all things in the game. Pretty sure it actually dwarfs some cities in size or at least a large town.

@@ConeOfArc Uh, the real reason for using the Atom Bomb on Imperial Japan was that OSS knew that at least one of the I-400 was on a mission, which would have involved dropping flea carrying bombs on San Diego, San Fransisco & if possible Portland. Bubonic Plague was a "new use" for the I-400s at the end of the war. This attack would have occurred less than a month after the bombing of Nagasaki, due to the limited speed of the I-400... So now you know why the US Navy sank the subs so quickly, as they found live deceased rats in cages and the flea bombs, which had coils of metal containing fleas around a weak explosive, as Unit 731 found that at least half the fleas would survive the explosive freeing them from pieces of the coils. The Scientists & Physicians of Unit 731 were repatriated after extensive questioning. They should have been repatriated without their heads, as what they did in Occupied China was so vile it even freaked out members of the Third Reich...

Imagine knowing that your only mission, "Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night" would have killed at least a quart of the people on North America's West Coast, if not a quarter of the World Population. Every Nation would be seeking that I-400 Submarine to slowly kill the crew in the most inhumane way possible, probably by letting their Bubonic Plague Carrying Rats loose inside with the crew, and then welding all the hatches shut... Then the Allies would have destroyed Imperial Japan leaving their home islands uninhabitable and let loose all kinds of pathogens including Unit 731's "products". Imagine once the bubonic plague reached the CCCP, as the Soviets would have been the last of the Allied Powers that were infected, giving them time to prepare something very nasty, such as "improving" Unit 731's "products" before using them...

Just as they finished building it, the London Naval Treaty came into effect, banning people from putting huge guns on submarines like that. I-400 meant to use the aircraft in offensive role, like aircraft carrier's dive bombers. This is the distinguishing role, which was also mentioned in the video at 13:03. There is another interesting link between the Typhoon and I-400. The need for stability and space meant that rather being one cylindrical pressure hull surrounded by a hydrodynamic shell like many WWII submarines, the I-400 had two such cylinders, giving it a sort of figure-eight cross section under its superstructure. The Russian SSNBM also adopted a multiple pressure hull design. So far as I know, this was a completely independent development as the US scullted the Japanese subs before the Russians could have one, but it makes me wonder about a world where more subs used this option.

Due to the added weigh of the hanger components, the I-400s were very top heavy and had a tendency to roll upside down. To solve this problem, the middle sections of the submarines were made up of two hulls that were welded side by side. This increased the platform's stability and counteract the top heavy nature of the submarines. The submarine's unique hull layout plus the hanger compartment also made the I-400s the first multi-hulled submarines.

I nominate a fascinating aircraft for a episode that almost no-one has ever heard of, the Dornier Do 31- The only VTOL troop transport ever built!
@pepson29933 жыл бұрын
Well it's surely an interesting design but not the only VTOL troop transport, as of today the V-22 is still in service with it's replacement currently in design. But if you are talking about jet powered VTOL troop transport then you might be correct abiut the DO being the only one. Cheers

A modern equivalent of this could be made with cheap strike drones, imagine pearl harboring an enemy fleet with a wave of disposible drones that rocket several ships before kamikazing into others.

If you ever decide to do another submarine for this series, could you do the one-off US Narwhal class?

We’re the I400s really the strangest ever created? I would have thought the French Cruiser Submarine Surcouf with its 8” main gun would of taken the cake. But more important great video! And more warship videos like this would be great.

Another legacy of the I-400 class is the SSG and SSGN boats of the 50’s and beyond. Many had to surface to launch their SSM ‘s.

I would love to see a cursed by design for aircraft. Some planes: Bachem Ba 349 (Natter), MXY7 Ohka (Baka Bomb), Vought XF5U (flying flapjack/ pancake), Fieseler Fi 103R Reichenberg (A V1 rocket with a cockpit), finally the Avro Canada VZ-9AV Avrocar (Literally looks like a flying saucer)

Seeing how you decided to branch out with your cursed by design serious, would you ever be willing to do an episode on the Vought F7U Cutlass?

If you like this sub, you'd like the French designed _Surcouf._ It was a submarine with the ability to launch a reconnaissance aircraft and had a primary armament of a dual 8 inch gun turret. It was meant to be a commerce raider that could outrange convoy escorts, and is a considerably better design than I-400 in my opinion.

@@bluntcabbage6042 nice, I'll try to implement the two when I have the opportunity to put them in a place in the story that makes sense

It's my opinion that the US did test that hull covering and it was surprisingly effective. Because everyone now has something similar on their subs. The Russian subs has or had a coating of up to 6inches I believe.

I BELIEVE...... ONE of the mini ones went down to Sydney, NSW Australia. And ALSO Queenscliff, Victoria Australia. They would release a plane for a recon mission. And in Sydney we shot at the thing. I can't remember if we hit it but they lost munitions and they sat at the bottom for DECADES. We only blew them up a few years ago.
