La Nueva Guatavita, is a charming town located just a short drive from Bogotá, Colombia. In addition to its beautiful colonial architecture and breathtaking natural surroundings, this town is well-known for its intriguing connection to the legend of El Dorado.
The town was established in 1593 but vanished on September 15, 1967, needing rapid reconstruction due to an environmental crisis. The emergence of the Tominé Reservoir caused the town center to be submerged. Today, the ruins lie south of the reservoir, submerged and preserving a colonial past.
The town itself is full of charm and character, with its white buildings and colonial streets, that don't date back to the period. Instead, these architectural gems have been meticulously crafted to recreate the ambiance and aesthetics of the Andalusian architecture.
