You have really developed something special with these retreats. Having been one of the founders of an art center in the Hudson River Valley in New York, I watch your adventures with a practiced eye. Your mixture of art, culture, history and cuisine is a success, which is proven by the joy and enthusiasm exhibited by your guests. Bravo! My favorite moment was watching your great cooks deal with the cheesecake gala. Especially their comment afterwards, “We survived it.” Double bravo to them.

Minnesota here!!!. I've been going to the same huge farmers market in downtown St. Paul, since I was a young girl in the 70's. Everything is grown in MN and the same local farmers have had stalls for decades and know their client's names. Thousands of people shop there every weekend from late spring to fall. it's absolutely fabulous.

Oh, you're so lucky. I know most people dont have access to that - and it's certainly not enshrined in law and culture like here!

I'm curious, what sets this process apart from "batik"? Steve's koi turned out great, BTW.
@ManorandMakerАй бұрын
Both this and batik use a wax-based "resist" to create separation between colours. In this case, the dye is then painted on fully by paintbrush. I believe in batik, the dye is mostly (but not exclusively) applied using baths, where the wax is applied more fully to all the areas that you dont want coloured by the latest bath colour - it requires a dye bath & wax application for every colour you wish to apply. Someone with a history of Indonesian textiles is welcome to correct me :)
@ManorandMakerАй бұрын
Batik uses wax as a barrier to create the design then the whole piece of silk is dunked in dye. The process is repeated with additional colours from light to dark. This is more like watercolour painting. Cheers!
@reneshoemaker2305Ай бұрын
With silk painting, we do not use wax, as that remains in the silk even after you wash it in hot or cold water. We are using a synthetic resist that we squeeze out of an applicator bottle, and then we set the dyes with a solution called "Permanent Dyeset Concentrate", or we could set the dyes in a steam bath. After we "fix" the dyes, all the excess dye AND the resist wash out in soap and water, leaving a very soft hand on the silk. Another way this is different than batik is that we are applying the dyes with a paint brush. When we apply dye to the resist-surrounded areas, the dye 'bleeds' or migrates to the edges. Its very magical to watch!
