Join me on a tour of Dundonian delights as I explore the attractions both well and not so well-known! We'll visit ships, museums, statues, football stadiums and a whole lot more. Why not come along and see what Scotland's 4th largest city has to offer.
Local legend Eric Gudmunsen has generously allowed me to use his music for this video - check out his music at ericgudmunsen.com - he has a new album releasing soon too and I'll be buying it for sure!
End Credits song: 'The Dundee Fowk Sang'.

I've been to Dundee a few times, but never actually discovered the Discovery. I've been missing out on something, so thanks for the fine video. I agree with your comments about the V&A. I visited the V&A last year when they hosted a dance club special exhibition, and although interesting enough, I felt they could have gone one step further. I felt the open spaces in the exhibition areas were used to 'pad-out' the displays, when in actual fact much more could have been included.

Yes I’ve enjoyed your Dundee videos, including the one when you had the bad luck of the fire alarm! On my visit there wasn’t even an extra exhibition on like in your one, so it was even MORE empty!

The dragon statue is about the legend of the 9 maidens.. A farmer sent his daughter to get water from the well and she never returned so he sent his next daughter and she also never returned after they had all been sent and never came back he went to the well to look for them. He found them all dead with a dragon next to the well. He ran for help and the town people chased the dragon. A guy called Martin caught up and killed the dragon. There is a stone outside Dundee in a field that is said is where the dragon fell..

ALSO, the dragon became the symbol for the Dundee Corporation when the town had the old green buses. I grew up in Dundee in the 1960s and the dragon was on the side of all the buses before they changed to the modern blue city branding.

Dundee - home of flax, Beano, William McGonagall's dreadful poetry and Marmalade. Thanks for a really interesting look around, Steve; it's a "must visit" city. And I agree with your comment on the V&A, so many museums & galleries around the world devote far too much to restaurants and cafe's than to their core business; exhibits.

I did spot one thing inside though that gave me a possible topic for a future video from you, The Falkirk Wheel and a wee wander along the canal to the Kelpie's maybe.Two incredible structures that are pretty close together and are incredible structures. Stay safe mate.

That was great Steve. It's a long time since I've been to Dundee. I used to go in the late 70's early 80's & I did think it was an attractive city at that time. I went later after returning to Scotland in 1991 & thought it was even more attractive; the area by the water was being more developed. Your video encourages me to want to visit Dundee again; it now looks like a beautiful city & full of interest for me. The ships look very interesting. I wonder if the Unicorn was once docked at Irvine in not very good shape, & is that where the Irvine ship ended up & is now an interesting museum? I may be way off track here. I remember the statue of Desperate Dan. Your room looked well worth the money! If you return to Dundee try to see Claypotts Castle; it's quaint, & I believe it's up a hill somewhere. And Broughty Ferry is worth a visit; there is an interesting castle there too. Thanks for that Steve.
@steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert! I'm a Dundee convert for sure, for me it was a lot cooler than I remember. Broughty Ferry was on the list of things to do for sure but I just ran out of time (and energy!) Great city though and definitely under appreciated in my opinion. And I believe this is the sunniest part of Scotland as well!

Back in the 1980s, I dropped my motorbike on some gravel. Dundee had the nearest garage and they fixed the broken indicator there and then. Good people so why haven’t I been back? After seeing your video, that’s the question I need to answer. BTW, if I remember Drachinifel correctly, one of the reasons for having low decks in warships was to keep the centre of gravity down. Vasa had taller decks for improved comfort for lofty Scandinavians and she capsized first time out.

Steve, I’m late in watching this (August 2024) but I’m starting to plan a trip to Scotland next summer. Might sound strange to some but I’m thinking of staying in Dundee for a few days (instead of Edinburgh) as a base for day trips to St. Andrews and Glamis Castle (Queen Mother’s former home) and also see the sights you’ve shown in Dundee. I visited Edinburgh last year and it’s beautiful but hotels are SO expensive. I’ll also stay in Glasgow and Inverness and travel around by train and bus. Thanks to you for all your wonderful videos - and thanks to Scott also for his great videos, too.

50 quid for a hotel ? I first had to check what a "quid" was. I suspected that it was a British Pound, But I was not 100% sure. I had to stop the video and check. Then come back. That is way too much for a hotel, one person ? I was in Switzerland in 2011 and just on trip and stayed near the airport at a Holiday Inn Express and it was kind of expensive, Just one night so I paid it . We went downtown and walking around. I walked into a nice hotel to ask the price, 650 francs per night. Mcdonalds , 1 big mac an filet and drink 25 francs. That was about $20 US. Everything sky high prices.

I support your assessment, despite not having been there. A *Design* museum should indicate “Form Follows Function”, this artist’s opinion. My dad’s a rocket scientist/engineer; he instilled us w a strong sense of good design (good on multiple levels). This place surely doesn’t seem to bear that out. 😔

I hope you get to the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther one day, I went back twice it was so good, (10 out of 10 for authenticity and feeling of belonging). Thank you for another fascinating tour of a Scottish city. Makes me want to take another trip up north. concentrating on the cities rather than the coast and the sea, as I did in the 1980's. I was taken on a visit to the "Discovery" as a boy in the 1950's when she was still moored alongside the Thames Embankment, and your video brought it all back. I particularly remember all the marvellous wooden panelling in the living quarters, which must have gone a little way towards insulating the ship in those Polar regions. More comfortable than the "Unicorn", that's for sure! Imagine negotiating those low decks just by the light of lanterns and tallow candles, as one would have to have done in the days of sail. There is some truth in that the population's average height was a little shorter back in those days, but many seamen were quite tall. I remember from my visits to HMS "Victory" in Portsmouth that her gunrooms and below decks are equally as " low headroom" and I think it's more to do with Naval architecture and the need to create the most effective "broadside" array of gunnery, while keeping the ship's freeboard to a minimum that leads to the cramped conditions. At action stations, even the captain's quarters would be cleared for action, and small "stern chaser"cannon mounted to fire through apertures in the ornate windows of the stern, which I believe were known as "gingerbreads". The streets that you passed through on your way to visit the "Unicorn" looked as it they had their own history to tell. I understand that Dundee's fortunes were made from whaling, jute import, and the manufacture of "sweeties", including Keillor's Marmalade and obviously Dundee cake! I remember that in my decades of working in advertising press production, I dispatched much "copy" to the ornate D.C. Thomson offices in 185 Fleet Street, which I believe was the last journalistic office still operating in that famous street before it closed some years ago. I used to get the Hulton "Eagle" comic whose heroes were Dan Dare, and Luck of the Legion, but I often borrowed my mates' copies of the "Beano" and "DandY" at school. The crossing of the Tay Bridge by that footway, high over the water, with streams of traffic hurtling by on either side doesn't appeal to me at all, and of course there's the tragic history of the first railway bridge across the Tay to be reminded of. What a pity that the V&A failed to live up to your expectations, perhaps a case of the packaging being more impressive than the contents! The building is certainly an amazing piece of modern architecture, and I have to say that its more traditionally housed counterpart in Kensington is one of my favourite London museums. Thanks again for taking us on another of your always very original excursions.

Fantastic comments as always Hugh! You really are reminded though on those old ships how they were built 100% for warfare over welfare! I couldn't stop imagining how it would have been as I walked around. I am sad I didn't have more time to explore the Discovery though, both ship and museum as they looked so good and I've been watching a good few documentaries on her voyages since.

@@steve-marsh "Scott of the Antarctic", together with the Titanic tragedy were two episodes which occurred in my Mother's early years, and made a great impression on her, as she talked a lot about hem to me when I was a boy. Peter Scott, the wildlife artist and son of the explorer was the guest of honour when my primary school was officially re-opened in 1955, after we'd moved into the new buildings from the "huts" we'd previously occupied.

This has to be the best and funniest and most enjoyable of your videos that I have watched so far, but I tend to think that after every new video of yours that I watch. I have a gentle suspicion that all the official Dundee tour guides have taken themselves out and drowned themselves in the Tay in shame. This is so full of enthusiasm and fun. As a sasanach all I knew about Dundee was Marmalade and Cake .. both known as Winston Churchill's favourite luxuries. They and Dundee of course helped win the war ! Though you missed finding the Keiller Marmalde factory, if it is still there? I had no idea that Desperate Dan nor The Lemmings were from Dundee...bring it on ! I do get a sneaky feeling though, that you might be spinning me a yarn...The world's closest rival football stadia...oh right. Did The Beatles only ever perform in Scotland? and is the unicorn really the national animal of Scotland? Or are you secretly Homer Simpson? After the planet's most luxurious charity shop...no doubt a UNESCO world heritage charity shop...amazing... and bronzes of polar bears chasing locals... I just couldn't stop laughing. A brilliant video. Thank You 😊 You should be the Ambassador for Dundee or the whole of Scotland... You are beyond brilliant. This is the wittiest of you tube channels. Thank You again for this charming cameo of Dundee... Beyond Fantastic.

Re the V&A - I've found a large chunk of the exhibition space is given over to the signature paid for exhibitions - if you don't go to them then you're missing out on about 2/3rds if the exhibit space. They've had some superb ones like Ocean Liners, Robots, Games Design, etc. If there's one that takes your fancy then definitely worth returning to see the full museum 👍

I'm sorry to say it because it's your city: To me as an immigrant Dundee feels dreary and depressing despite the V&A or other attempts to uplift it. The McManus is a true museum, but still it brings respect more than love for the city and the people who worked in its industries. Especially towards the end of your video where you visit the football ground and those (to my eyes) absolutely horrible comic characters, I just feel depression creeping in and want to run away as fast as possible. Maybe it's me, but I've heard of native born people feeling the same. It seems that Fife alternates one rich aristocrat town with one bleak industrial city. Dundee feels like the poor cousin of St Andrews. You could accuse the other of being posh fluff (it is) but really why does Scotland have to be so crushingly segregated?
@steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean to be honest, and especially with the, let's call it 'diversity' of Fife towns, but I genuinely had a great couple of days in a city I know so little about. I'm sure living there would maybe not be my choice, but as in so many Scottish towns and cities, even the less desirable ones are packed full of history. Cheers for the comment.

Shame you didn’t visit the Verdant Works the Jute Scottish Museum. After all that’s what Dundee is most famous for. At one point over 75% of the population worked within the industry. You will have to visit again and cover the history of the Jute industry in Dundee.

I somewhat agree with you with the V&A - it seems a bit crazy that 50% of the entire building is just a big empty cube containing a cafe. that said, the paid exhibition space is large and very impressive (depending on the exhibition of course). Since you emphasised it was free to get in I assume you didn't go to the paid exhibit - the free exhibition space is a bit sad and small.
@steve-marsh

Yeah true - my timing wasn't the best as they were setting up for the exhibition when I was there, so no option to see anything beyond the free bit.
