Earth-moving operations commenced in March 1967, culminating in an official groundbreaking ceremony in April of the same year.
The Keowee Dam emerged as the cornerstone of the project, a testament to human ingenuity and engineering Stretching 3500 feet long and standing 20 feet taller than its counterpart on the Little River, the Keowee Dam symbolized the union of nature and technology. With 2 million cubic yards of earth and two hydroelectric units capable of generating 40 megawatts, it embodied the power of human innovation.
As the waters of the Keowee and Little Rivers converged, Lake Keowee came into being. The construction of an 800-foot tunnel and the creation of the Oconee Plants skimmer wall were pivotal milestones, shaping the landscape and ecosystem for generations to come.
But the story doesn't end here. Parallel to the birth of Lake Keowee, Lake Jocassee and the Jocassee Hydroelectric Station were taking shape. With 75 miles of pristine shoreline and a reputation as the cleanest lake in the state, Lake Jocassee symbolized the harmony between progress and preservation.
In April 1970, Duke Energy closed the gates at the Keowee Dam, heralding the final impounding of Lake Keowee. The Keowee Hydro Station commenced commercial operation in April 1971, followed by the inauguration of the Oconee Nuclear Station in 1973.
