Darren I visited the salt mines in 2000. I loved it. I would like to go again. We had a few days in Krakow but most of our holiday was in Warsaw as my daughter was working in Poland at the time. We went in a mini bus to Wieliczka as my daughter was able to speak Polish.

I visited about 10 yo 12 years ago and found ut fascinating. I'm still using the salt lamp I bought there. The cathedral with the salt chandeliers was the most memorable bit of the visit along with the steps down near snow White snd the seven dwarves which might have melted away by now.

I was there in '92. It was truly an experience. Perhaps we took the miners tour, as I remember it as more authentic with a lift only able to carry a few persons at a time. The original miners lift. Not as tourist friendly as it is seems today, The currency exchange rate must have changed since. I recall that 1 mill. Zloty was around DKK 500,- approx. GBP 57,-

I was there about 10 years ago. It is jaw dropping, there is no doubt. I was told that the carvings, grottoes, statues, and halls were all done by the miners, very few of whom, if any, had any formal training in the art at all; they would do a full shift, usually 12 hours, and for light relief, would then do a couple of hours on the features we see today. Almost beyond belief, isn't it? IIRC, the Great Hall took about 80 years to finish? Whatever the actual time, it was a long job, and they kept at it- some workers dying before seeing it completed. Now that's commitment. And I can confirm the 'cosiness' of the lift. I myself am claustrophobic, and was wedged in this lift, and I was OK as it happened, but there was an older woman from Blackburn in front of me who was on the point of losing it. Even so, I, and I bet she, would endure it all over again to see this place once more. The salt laden air gave my friends and I a huge thirst. So when we got back into Kracow, we hit the CK Brouwer microbrewery and bar-which itself is underground- below the Elefant department store, and acted accordingly. What a trip. Thanks for putting this on here, I can point others to it as my pics were sometimes not great. Cheers.

I stayed in Krakow about 2 yrs ago, what a fantastic place with great food, great beer/wine & such friendly locals. It’s a very fascinating city too. We also did the salt mine tour & were blown away by the lengths & depths of the underground tunnels & the amazing chapels. We were lucky to do the Aushwitz’s tour too, full of history but very very sad due to what happened their. Enjoy your stay in Krakow. P.s. do they still have the electric Bird scooters in the city centre ?

Interesting contrast to the salt mine I visited near Salzburg in Austria, a good few years ago. Much more sophisticated but lacking the polished wooden slides that Salzburg had to get you down to mine level, much more fun that 300+ steps
