At 13:40 into the video - I don't like the long sanding block and 80-grit paper your mechanic used. GM recommends a 3"x4" flat steel block and 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper used (with a light oil) in a circular motion to prepare the cylinder block deck (and head decks if machining is not required). The mechanic in the video didn't take any precautions to prevent sanding grit/debris from falling into the lifter galley, cylinders and water jacket. GM recommends using shop towels in those areas to help prevent contaminating the engine.

3 quick things...that sanding block isn't flat enough, you need an actual lapping plate and you can't just go in one direction. Then the debris just gets Into the cylinders, coolant passages, lifters? You got to put something into those openings. A memory foam floor mat works well in my opinion. Last is check for deck and head flatness with a feeler guage and straight edge. Just my 2 cents.

Luke did a great job! That LLY is going to last a long time, and be a very dependable truck. I can't wait to win it!!

i had the same work done on my LML .. pulled heads .. completely machined them .. ARP studs .. mahle gaskets .. and threw in new injectors too .. diesels are expensive .. so find u a good diesel mechanic and treat them well/right .. i do .. imho though, my next diesel will be a cummins .. all diesels break .. but those straight 6s and simple design make them less expensive to maintain compared to dirtymaxes and powerstokes ..

Exactly no pulling cabs on cummins and only one cylinder head keeps things way simpler

There’s a company near me that is known around the states for being the best at duramax headgasket jobs. They guarantee them for the life of the truck

When I looked into doing head gaskets myself I found those are the best gaskets to do the job too. Up here that job runs $6-8k. Kinda wondering what it cost you cause I have some of the issues you saw.

He charges roughly $6k to do this job. Hit him up at @southerbuiltautoworks with any questions.

That is a very intimidating to me. I just bought my first diesel. A 2016 Duramax. I know nothing about diesel engines. Almost feel like I made a mistake but its mine for the next 5 years anyway.

My vin is coded for lly, it's one of the last of 06 production, but when I ordered a new charge tube from the cold side into the y bridge, it is for a lbz and not the lly, it also has the 6 speed and not the 5, which I've heard that is indicative of lbz, if any one knows for sure?
