Thank you for the tips on head gaskets. I'm getting a little nervous about our 04 GMC Sierra 2500hd 4x4 duramax. It's at 345,000. It's going in Monday to have the flex plate replaced. The starter won't engage half the time. Transmission and transfer case were rebuilt at 295,000. Trans went out and t case was melted. Everything is stock no extra power adders. And it is an everyday truck and a ranch truck towing a gooseneck livestock trailer. Not used really hard definitely not beat on. But I replaced the starter because truck had an issue of not starting ( nothing happened when key was turned but I could jump it with a screwdriver on the starter). It was an O'Reilly Auto starter and they checked it and said it was bad and would warranty it. Also the starter was starting to not fully engage. When I replaced it I noticed damaged teeth on the flex plate and truck still wouldn't start. Turns out there was a dealer installed anti theft device and the relay went out (our local shop found it and removed it). Anyway, about a month later starter back with not fully engaging. I wish I would have thought about it when transmission was done. Now flex plate has to be replaced at a much higher cost and I cannot do it. I did do it on our 91 GMC Sierra but it is a gas truck and 700r transmission (much lighter and I have to work in the dirt). I can't afford a newer used truck and you can't find them around here anyway. When you do find one they have as many miles as ours and still cost almost $30,000. We are in the central valley of California. Again thanks for the tips.

Interesting pressure testing methods. I own a machine shop and have had the pleasure of pressure testing one too many duramax heads. The years with the pressed in injector tubes are a job I will no longer take in unless the customer agrees to updating to the threaded injector tubes. My pressure tester will blow the injector tubes out without the injectors toe clamped into the heads, then you stand a chance of missing a leaking or cracked injector tube. The threaded injector tubes will allow for further material to be removed from the head if need be. Have had no problems milling .015” off of the heads this way. I have seen cracks in certain duramax heads that were very hard to detect in a submergible pressure tester. The crack was so fine that the pressure leaking from the crack resembled a faint smoke emitting from the crack. We had to warm the head up to realize the severity of the crack. So pressure testing can be a dicey subject. Good content.

So I have an 02 Chevy Duramax with 245,000 miles .Its had had three sets of injectors...GM paid for the first time..$ 10,000 in repairs...I'm getting tired of all the money flying out of my pocket..Within 6 months I would like to buy a 2018 -2021 which of the trucks ,GM,Dodge or Ford have the least problems...? Don't get me wrong ,I love my little truck for the pulling power compared to a gas rig..I have $14,000 + in repairs and its only worth about $10-12,000

New sub here. Found your channel as a KZbin suggestion. Just did the head gaskets on my '03 Subaru. I was there when the machinist surfaced the heads. You could see the low point in the oil return area where it was leaking oil. MLS gaskets, no more leaking. Got the car cheap because the owner had it over heat. Called a mechanic, he diagnosed it as bad head gaskets. Yes, they were leaking oil, but not coolant. Turns out, the major leak was coming from a broken hose clamp on the lower radiator.

Not a diesel fan for a long time, they have a place but they are not cheap. Back in the 60's diesels were mainly on big trucks, farm and industrial applications. Yes they were expensive to purchase outright but then they required very little routine maintain to keep up. At the time gas engines required ignition change out every 12-15k miles. So you were constantly doing minor items to maintain them and then the fuel was at the time about a dime a gallon cheaper for the diesel. Well times are a changing quite a bit. Right now a gas engine will run practically 100k before needing a tune up. With Fuel Injection on a gas engine a set of injectors will run you most often less than $100 for a full set. Sorry basically those injectors work no more than 70psi so the failure on them is usually they need cleaning due to the crappy blended fuels. So the upkeep for a gas engine is now much less than it was in the early 70's. While diesel engines the cost of upkeep has become astronomical with the addition of air pollution standards now required. Now with common rail injection required to meet current standards injectors fail at a regular interval and one injector costs several hundred dollars and the changeout cost is again several hundred dollars. Now with EGR mandatory on most diesels this causes massive issues that are not cheap to address. The days of the old "Diesels are cheap and reliable" are a thing of the past. My suggestion is simply unless you run the engine at full load all day long, like an over the road truck or farm equipment a diesel isn't a good choice for you. If you actually NEED that torque of the diesel, mostly a lack of confidence issue, add a aftermarket turbocharger to the gas engine. Did this to my old Jeep Wrangler 2.5lt and now it will pull like mad when I need the power and the rest of the time it isn't really any effect.

In your opinion is a dually that much better when hauling? I’m looking for an lbz dually in my price range, but it’s proving difficult to find in my price range 15k. I’m looking to haul up to one ton trucks, smaller rv’s (class b van style), skid steer, maybe a backhoe. I buy and sell so would be using to haul pretty often. But if I get a single rear wheel, I can use it off road and more versatile. Thanks!

I've got an LLY with over 320k miles on it. Last summer it developed a slight tick in the front drivers area of the engine. I checked the injectors and #2 was bad so I replaced it. When it first started it ran great but when I got home from the test drive I noticed the tick was back, was louder than before and the engine had developed a slight miss at every ticking sound. The radiator hose doesn't get hard after driving and it doesn't lose antifreeze but I know that it can still have a blown head gasket. I'm planning on replacing the head gaskets but want a good reputable shop to rework the heads. How much do the guys at that shop charge for rebuilding the heads as long as the heads are good? I live in southern Illinois so I'd have to ship the heads to them and have them shipped back.
@Toolaholic72 жыл бұрын
Another cause of headgasket failures is improper gasket surface cleaning.GM has a TSB not use scotch brite pads on a die grinder out.Found the little pieces get in the oil and the oil filter can't trap them resulting in premature engine failure.Plus take off too much material at a fast rate.l did tell someone to check your channel out and shown it to him,he has a 2015 Chevy 2500 HD with the Duramax.He spent $14,000.00 to have the whole fuel system replaced.The pump went bad and everything was replaced in the fuel system

I wouldn't whiz-wheel any head gasket surface and going thrugh that much work, the machinist would be involved with making sure it's flat and gasket selection, etc. This isn't a sbc or briggs lawn mower, scraping the heads across the sidewalk won't cut it.

That is interesting about the importance of using the right head gaskets... Aluminum parts can loose their temper and become annealed, if heated above 475°F. If the machine had a coolant leak , and the coolant level dropped below the heads, then it is possible that the heat could go above 475°F. Ryan, before the machine work was done on these heads, were they checked for annealing, by performing a Rockwell hardness test? Annealing could cause strength failures of high stress parts, like these heads... I can't tell you how many times that I found aluminum heads that were previously re-surfaced, and re-developed problems not long afterward- because the aluminum heads were heat damaged... It is one of the main reasons that I prefer cast-iron blocks & heads... Much more durable when something like an overheat occurs...

I'm wondering what brands it is that has the premature failure. I know you like to keep it classy and not point fingers but it might save some people money and a headache. When my head gaskets were done I was told by the shop that they used Victor Rienz gaskets. They said those were really good, it's been 60,000 miles no problems, so I'm hoping they're good to go.

Fel- pro has gone down hill in the last 8 yes so I only use mahle or oem for stuff now and don't have comebacks for gaskets leaking after short period .mahle or oem in my shop

What do you know about a l5p low coolant code that keeps coming up? I’ve drained coolant down a little and filled it up full with no change. The level doesn’t change on its own. And what can I do to make my 19 l5d have more power?
@shanek65822 жыл бұрын
Do you have antifreeze in your oil or oil in your antifreeze?
@ng-ht1vx2 жыл бұрын
On the L5P, you have to replace the coolant reservoir.

The diesel you paid for is about $ .45 /L cheaper then Ontario currently.
