Hello Kyoto Fans! A follow up to our more comprehensive look at the Hanezu Odori, "Kyoto Festival: Young Japanese girls dancing at Zuishin-in temple", enjoy the full version of these traditional dances after you learn about Zuishin-in Temple's popular spring festival!
The charming Plum Dance performed by local schoolgirls in colorful costume tells the story of Japanese beauty Ono no Komachi and her suitor Fukukasa no Shosho as told in the "Tale of One Hundred Nights". Accompanied by song and music, the girls practice for months before performing this dance offering at the temple known as "Ono Temple". Two older girls then take the stage in order to present the Zuishin-in Imayō dressed as old-style dancers called shirabyōshi who wore men's court clothing and performed to sung poetry using a fan and wearing a blade.
The cute and playful look of the Hanezu Odori combined with the classic figures of the Imayō makes for a great pairing to watch, so sit back and enjoy the performances at Zuishin-in's Hanezu Odori, then go see it for yourself!
