ملتان کا سب سے پرانی نام مول آستھان ہے۔ یہ سنسکرت کے دو الفاظ مول اور استھان کا مجموعہ ہے جس میں مول کا مطلب قیمتی اور آستھان کا مطلب جگہ کے ہیں یعنی کہ قیمتی جگہ ہے جس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ مھنجوداڑو اور ہڑپہ کے وقت میں ملتان ان دونوں جگہوں درمیان میں ایک بڑا تجارت کا گڑھ تھا یہاں کے لوگ زیادہ تر بنیے تھے اسی وجہ سے یہاں کے لوگوں میں وفا نہیں ہے۔

Ancient Mali Gana people were natives of Multan( Multan derived from Mali +sthan =Malithan = Multan, place of Mali Gana people) in ancient Punjab since time unknown & were residing in and around Multan and sangam area of Ravi and Chenab and it's banks. They fought with the army of Alexander in 326BC and so Alexander started his Malian campaign against them and attacked their fort like structure made up of mud near banks of Ravi and a fierce battle was held and Alexander was seriously injured by an arrow of Mali Gana people, then his infuriated Greek soldiers killed Mali Gana people along with their women and children brutally, many Mali women burnt themselves to save them from foreign Greek soldiers and perhaps this was first recorded jouhar ( Atmadah, self immolation)in Indian history. After this defeat Mali Gana people migrated towards south east side in present day Rajasthan and Malwa area of present day Madhya Pradesh and further in Maharashtra and later spread in other parts of India. Those, who converted into Islam are known as Maliar in Pakistan.
