I was stationed at a small boat station in Oregon. I was part of the color guard. We did events and parades with the American flag. I just remember being a part of the ceremony we were honoring a high king decorated marine veteran. This young man came up to him and stated “I just enlisted in the Marines, I wanna be just like you“. That marine looked at him and said “no young man, I’ve spent my whole career taking lives, do you see those Coast Guard boys over there, they save lives every day. if I had to do all over again, that’s what I would’ve done” that young man was so disappointed but it made sense to me. Anyone can take a life, not everyone can save one.

The "Bad Calls." I distinctly remember things like Q River, Niagara, and so many more where our brothers gave the final measure. To answer, we dedicated ourselves even more; suited up and responded faster! Semper Paratus brothers and sisters!

GREAT VIDEO! Cape "D" memories! My father and myself headed out from Ilwaco early in the morning in the late 70's. Foggy day, so we hugged the North Jetty. Half way across we encountered 30 foot rollers. NO breakers. We came across a Coast Guard 47' and they just kept giving us thumbs up. They were at idle, and so were we. We crossed the bar that day, no boats in sight, and the fishing was amazing. Thank you USCG! You're the greatest unsung hero's ever! Roll the boat, fail the course.

Had a patient once (always asked Navy or Coast Gurad when I saw the Tattoos) that had spent 4 years Navy in WW 2 Subs was more than once depth charged, the whole nine yards, then 18 years Coast Guard, in electronics, but his first 3 years were in the old open cockpit 36ft Motor Life Boats. According to him "the best damn boat the Coast Guard ever had". You had to be tough to go out in those 36 footers!

I grew up a Coastie brat. My father is a retired BMC and graduate of that coxswain school. I spent a lot of time being cold and wet in the Corps and even saved a few lives as a LEO. My dad is one of my hero's and is the epitome of a quiet professional. I can't say enough good things about the Guard. Their SAR mission alone makes them a unique bunch and then if you throw in everything else they do, I think the Guard is a stand out example of selflessness and dedication that doesn't get enough recognition. I worked on housing for this base in 1992. It was cold and while building the 2X4 stem walls beneath the houses the studs were floating in puddles as I nailed them; kinda cool.. Freezing rain and penetrating humid cold... Tough job on a boat! Good job boys!

I was part of the crew (1992-1996) during this filming. Our crew was the first after the prototype team to test and evaluate the new 47 footer. I came back to Cape Disappointment to Command the Motor Lifeboat School from 2008-2011. Both tours as Cape D were some of my favorite times and the best crews in my 32 year career.
