My buddy died recently out on the kayak crab fishing. The coast guard did everything they could. Searched all night and the next day. Thankful for their efforts. Wish he was wearing a life vest. He would of been alive today. Just wear the thing even if you think you won’t need it. You just never know when something could go wrong

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's passing. It's so sad. We lost a family friend to a boating accident (recreational) a few years ago too and he didn't have his life jacket on either. Instead, his wife and three little ones are missing him greatly. With the life jackets that they make nowadays being less bulky and light weight, it would be easier to boat/work (paddle, pull pots, etc) while wearing one. The hard part is convincing folks who have boated/worked for years without one to put one on.

Love the Coast Guard - they and a salvage craft reached our flooding vessel, dead with seized prop in heavy following sea, 5 miles offshore. Responding to our relayed S.O.S, they came aboard, stuffed leaks, deflooded, and towed us to Cuttyhunk island for repairs. And they offered to compensate ME for cracking a rail pulling alongside. Of course, I gratefully declined.

I bought a 32 foot Chris-Craft wooden boat many years ago when I was a young man Clinton Connecticut, I was in the ocean and all the sudden I started to take on water just got my license, I had my eight-year-old son with me and my handicap brother. My son and my brother was bailing out water, I quickly assess the situation and knew my bilge pump could not stay up with it the water was rising very much, I made a decision I only could save one. I decided my son I had to save I was the only one that could really swim, it was the most terrifying moment of my life, we all had lifejackets but we was way out into the ocean, I decided to make a mayday call. I was like a crazy man not knowing what to do the Coast Guard said where are you give me your coordinates, the boat did not have a GPS unit all I could do is describe a building that I could see I passed a little while ago, I told them my situation the Coast Guard calm me down where now I got control of my feelings. Before I knew it a helicopter flew overhead, it was the Coast Guard the waves was crazy, not knowing how this was going to end the next minute I knew I could see a Coast Guard ship sire greens blaring charging right towards me. They managed to get a pump on board. And it controlled the flow of the water there pump stayed right up to it all I can really say these men probably save my life my sons life and my brothers life, they are so brave. I know it has been many years but thank you Coast Guard you are one brave dudes and ladies PS May God always be with Use

Washington native and US Army vet here. Welcome to our winter, folks. It's said, with some accuracy, that a Northwest winter starts on October 15th with rain. And it doesn't stop raining until May. What's bizarre about it is that I LIKE this weather. There is absolutely nothing like going outside after a strong spring squall with a stiff breeze behind it to bright sunshine and 'the mountain' [Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, or Hood] out. It's like unwrapping a present... brisk fresh air and a clear sky showing off a snow-capped peak. You can keep your 90 and 90 Southern weather. I'll take Northwest maritime temperate any day. Just remember: good boots, a rain coat, and a good hat. Only tourists use umbrellas. 😁

Years ago, I was on a private yacht and we had just come out of drydock in Hilton Head, S.C. As we headed down the river to open water, it was so calm. Before we knew it about 12 miles out, we were in a hurricane. At one time we came just a few clicks of no return on rolling over. We had a pendulum on the bridge that would show how far we had rolled on our side. When your tallest part is 65 ft. high, and you have to scrub the salt off it the next day. You know you have been playing in the BIG POND! As we were headed south along the coast, we could hear a 50 ft. Catamaran going down about 20 miles out further off the coast. We knew we couldn't get to them, We heard the CG headed for them, and we prayed for them to still be there when the CG arrived. It's a scary feeling when you have huge waves coming over your decks and breaking things lose that it should take a bulldozer to move, but water is powerful, and you learn to respect the sea. She is beautiful but can be deadly in a few minutes. I have spent many years on the water, and had several close calls, but I still love it and it is part of life that so many enjoy each day! My hats off to the Coastie's, as many call them. A friend of mine was in the CG, and I always wished I had joined them as well! Stay safe guys wherever you are stationed! Thanks for your service and dedication!

Just don't see a reason to get the crap beat out of you if you can avoid it (from the spray and driving rain). Understanding you can see better up top, but hey, over an hour away, keep your crew warm and dry as long as you can. But it's not like the days of the 44 where you kinda had to be outside.
