Apparently they are part of the "Explorer Search and Rescue" program which grew out of the boy scouts, so you are not far off! What a bad look. Young, inexperienced, out of shape, and unprepared. And to top if off they pushed on despite worsening conditions, and then required rescue themselves.

Portland here. I love the Pacific Northwest. It's incredibly beautiful. But dangerous. We have a high desert, gorgeous rain forests, stunning mountains, and the coastline...the beautiful, lovely, dangerous coastline. So many boats and ships have gone down in those treacherous waters. How can one not celebrate a branch of the service that regularly saves people’s lives. These men and women endure rigorous mental and physical training to qualify then maintain this excellence throughout their career. I for one stand in awe and am very grateful. Actually after 4 years of shame finding these videos has once again restored my feelings of patriotism. Yes, I always say what's on my mind which gets me in trouble more times than I can count.🤣 but I would have to educate them on what they did wrong and how they can improve for the next rescue. It only make sense to me. I mean they were locals so they should know the weather can turn quickly and how to dress for a hike. Gloves, hat and some poles would be a good idea. Plus, thicker coats. Anything waterproof to go OVER thermal pants too. Layers,layers,layers. Med kit with elastic bandages for a "knee injury". The guy looked pretty stable getting out of the basket and then the plane.

The ground rescue team needed to get rescued, there is nothing wrong with that. At least they did have a backup to find the lost hikers. I wonder if people realize if that snow was that deep they would have succumbed to the cold if they did not get rescued. Luckily the guy with the broken leg had the gps to find the lost hikers. Ground rescue and CG should work as a team regardless if they needed help and they did. Kudos to both the ground rescue and the Coast Guard.

First rule of emergency services: Don't become apart of the problem... it happens sometimes but it sure looks like these dudes could have avoided it. Its unfortunate because it looks like a bunch of young kids with good intentions but it appeared they were quite unprepared and maybe lacked any leadership which put them in that situation. You have got to be prepared for an unexpected bivouac in that environment...

I disagree. As a backcountry skier, I know the snowy forest very well. You should know it’s going to be hard to hike through more than 8 inches of snow. You should know how to build a quinzee if you’re going to be out after dark. You should be prepared to stay overnight if you’re going to be out late enough for the sun to set. Not many people know that it is physically impossible to get below 32 degrees in a snow quinzee. The dude who had a bad leg, sure nobody can help an injury. But the fact the rest of the crew wanted out is detrimental to the hikers that are lost, not that they also weren’t prepared because clearly they weren’t if they got lost. It’s these people that ruin the backcountry for the rest of us. That’s why we say “know before you go” so for the love of God, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO. BE PREPARED. There’s a reason Boy Scouts know what they are doing. They follow those two things.

They do an amazing job! About survival and cliff falls...one never knows. My son is a walking miracle! He went on a cross country Motorcycle trip with my son in law and his Father..not my hubby. They took my son on an advanced course and when their dust became difficult to see thru, he hit a boulder and flew off a cliff! He broke 7 trees with his back, got disengaged from the motorcycle which kept slamming into him and he managed to get himself free of it and stopped himself at 150 feet down. The Motorcycle took the entire 300 foot drop. My son in law thought he was dead! As he came back up the cliff on his own, he had a twig that lodged behind the nerve of his right wrist and a broken nose which wasn't caught at first. The first two Drs missed both issues somehow but the Alaskan Dr fixed him right up as within two weeks my son was in Alaska to go out Bristol Bay Salmon fishing after that fall and we told him to go in again. Never underestimate a miracle survival story...they HAPPEN.

Which they could have told the rescue swimmer when he first made contact with them on the ground. Not when the guy got in the helicopter himself. If they had a radio that would have help even more then they could tell the Coastguard as soon as they got it. Then when the hikers were safe and in the helicopter ask if they could also help them get out.

The mindset for this initial rescue team was we have 8 we need to rescue 2 so we need supplies to support 8 people for the search plus we are hoping to gain 2 resources (as in people) so realistically they should have been equipped with enough supplies for 14 people. Reason being is that your survivors are starving and dehydrated. So carry extra supplies to treat such a situation. On top of that you should also predict you will never be in the perfect extraction location as in you clear the snow and a perfect heli pad is secretly hidden beneath the snow.....so plan for an extract to a location that both the patients and rescue team are extractable. Also keep in mind contract local resources and let them know if your planning on sending out such a large team. This adds to their burden but lets them try and arrange this for any poor air crew who comes on shift at this shit show moment. Conclusion if you are gunna be the A team from the movies don't act like resources are at YOUR disposal. They are not and if what you set out for ends up becoming a rescue mission for you, you may have essentially sealed the fate for the vary souls you originally set out to save.

They need to work harder and learn alittle more before they become a problem themselves. Again or just stay home.

First of all, thanks for these videos. It takes me awhile to watch them because I hear or see something want to know more about and I go look it up. Anyway, at 38:42 LCDR McGown mentions that he relies on Flt Mech as his eyes side, underneath and behind. Could the aircraft be equipped with a camera or radar to help with that? I'm thinking that at times the Flt Mech gets very busy and his attention is divided.
@Hookechoandline
@Hookechoandline 4 жыл бұрын
What he’s referring to is the flt mech (we call them crew chiefs in the marines) is assisting the pilots situational awareness by looking for towers, other aircraft, obstacles, etc. He’s not just looking for things/people on the ground. Having that human element is crucial to safety of the flight in missions like this one. Attention gets divided in specific ways, there are procedures. However in some cases there are cameras that do help with the ground SAR but they aren’t helping guide the pilot in tight spots.

Perhaps the criticism directed to the members of the search party by other commenters here is deserved, and yet, circa 13:58, one of the USCG guys says, "I can only imagine what the rescue team's going through. They're cold, they're tired ..." Yes, they were ill prepared. (Perhaps that can be said for not a few people the USCG rescues.) Yet, still, the USCG had empathy for their situation. Well done! Mountain hiking is nice, but to be unprepared in a region where snowfall comes fast and furious is not too smart, also surfing in dangerous areas, rescued and being ready to go again, duh. The Coast Guard folks are risking THEIR lives after lots of training. Paying a fine for risky behavior might make people think twice about where and how they do their sport!

They are what they have for search and rescue? No wonder they didn’t make it. They just joined to say I’m part of the team. Hell one over weight and the others skinny and seems like no outdoor experience.

People who set out on hikes particularly rescuers ought to be mildly aware of what conditions are actually like and prepared, otherwise stay home on the back lawn. 😡

the rescue team in the beginning were a bunch of morons. They should not be part of a team rescuing people. They didn't even signal the helicopter if they needed help or not. X or Y

Sorry, i fully support the attempt that the "rescue team" was trying to do but they just added to the already critical situation for the search for the two lost hikers. I always say what's on my mind which gets me in trouble more times than I can count.🤣 but... I would have to educate them on what they did wrong and how they can improve for the next rescue. Nicely of course. It only make sense to me. I mean they are locals so they should know the weather can turn quickly and how to dress for a hike. Gloves, hat and some poles would be a good idea. Plus, thicker coats. Anything waterproof to go OVER some thermal pants if possible. Invest for next time. Layers, layers, layers. A Med kit is essential for ant hike and elastic bandages for "knee injurys". The guy looked pretty good getting out of the litter and then the helicopter. But most importantly a radio. They could have helped alot more if they had just radioed in that they had the hikers location as soon as they had found it and let the Coastguard do the rest. I mean they knew they had the location when the swimmer went down but didn't say anything until the guy got in the helicopter.
