I wonder how brave you would be if sent to fight in a war no one wonted in your home land. If no one invades your lands and life is good why make war for a left wing, fascist pig. If you think your so brave look at how the Italian people fought in ww1 and when push came to shove when it became apparent how bad thing where getting as the german army was pushed back and started to fall back from Greece Italian army units hit back at the german troops. Ask my own country men from the RN how well the Italian Navy did when doing there best against the best navy at the time. The air force fought very well, were well trained with not the best equipment but made a fine job with the kit given to them. My Grandad fought against the Italian troops in North Africa and in Italy (he's now long past away) He told me how good Italians were when well lead and trained just as good as any other army.

After this series was made it was revealed that the Germans were intercepting American reports on the British deployments in North Africa. Rommel had detailed knowledge of British movements and knew were to place his armour. The leak was discovered in July 1942 and Rommel never won another battle against the British.. I've always had a special fondness for the Savoia-Marchetti S.79 Bomber. It's unique design makes it probably the best looking bomber of the war in my humble opinion. Of course it takes more than good looks for a fighter or bomber to be effective.

Re New Zealanders on Crete...General Freyberg VC ordered the fateful retreat which may have given the German's their critical opening. It is possible that if the German paras had been denied all 3 main airfields much longer, and they were being held until this point, then the invasion may have been smashed. What a filip to allied morale this would have been, as well as saving many further losses during the evacuation.

***** Yeah I've interviewed 20 or so Italian pilots from WW-II (R.A. and A.N.R.). For the most part some preferred the G.55 a little bit more than the MC.205 and vice versa. Both were heavily armed and they loved that. Those who flew the Re.2005 loved that fighter as well perhaps a bit more than the other two but depends on their own opinion. So I can say that the 5 Series as they are known were all excellent aircraft that Italian pilots told me were an equal match to the P-51 and Spitfire.

rudeone4life "some preferred the G.55 "......Did you know that both Egypt and Argentina used G.55s in their air forces after WW2? I recently got a book sent to me from Argentina concerning the subject. As you know, the Regia Aeronautica used the Bf109Gs which were my Favorite Versions of the 109 series. Of course the FW190 w/ the BMW 801 Radial Engine was my Favorite German Fighter. Would have been intersting to see Macchi or Fiat adapt that engine to their inline engine aircraft. The Japanese did that with the inline Ki-61 thus becoming the Ki-100 which was an outstanding aircraft comparable to the Ki-84.

The Canadian, South African, Caribbean, Oz and NZ' servicemen were a minority to UK British who were majority English. English troops understood the concept very easily as they served with them. Then in SE Asia, they understood and experienced the absolutely huge numbers of Indian servicemen. It was all very clear at the time. The C-205 fighter, an outgrowth of the earlier C.202 Folgore (“Thunderbolt”), was fast, well-designed, and good enough that admiring German pilots formed a squadron with them. Thank God Italian manufacturers were poorly led by Mussolini.If Italy had waited until 1942 to 43 to declare war on the allies, the allied would have had serious problems.

P-39, couldn't hold its own against German fighters! (45:09). Russian pilots didn't seem to agree with that statement. I'ts the pilot that is at least 50% of the equation.
@sirxavior1583
@sirxavior1583 8 жыл бұрын
Its probably because its a different theater of operations and the Airacobra's strengths weren't maximized with US pilots who had a different requirement. The US 8th Air force would have probably needed a dedicated Figher not a "multi role aircraft" as the P-39. Notice how the P-39 is similar to the Sturmovik which also served well in Russia.
@wrongtrack6095
@wrongtrack6095 8 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong but the Soviets used the P-39 and P-400 as fighters also. I believe they utilized the King Cobra near the end of the war also which did have good high altitude performance.
@wrongtrack6095
@wrongtrack6095 8 жыл бұрын
My point exactly, The Russians were able to use the P-39 to defeat other aircraft and the US couldn't.
@sirxavior1583
@sirxavior1583 8 жыл бұрын
@Wrong Track. So based on your argument WWII Russian Pilot were better trained then US and Western pilots because the US 8th Air force couldn't utilize the Air-Cobra?. Even thought US and Allied Pilots were well respected and sometimes feared by Russian Pilots until the Korean War. My argument was since the Air War was more intense in the West because the Luftwaffe was more hard pressed to defend there airspace from the RAF and 8th Air Force bombers. The Air Cobra didn't fit well because they needed either a dedicated fighter to defend the bombers or a bomber to destroy the factories, not a multi role aircraft such as the Air Cobra. The Air Cobra fit well in Russia because the best fighter units would have been sent to the West and at the same time the Red Air force was improving. So the quality of German Pilots in Russia was declining and the quality of the Russian pilots was improving to the point were the Red Air force became very professional. So its nothing to do with the Aircraft its just the tactics and timing. The USAF would say the Navy F-18 Hornets suck and the Navy would say the F-16 sucks, the reality is both utilize there aircraft differently the same with the P-39 Aircobra and the way it was used in Russia vs in the West. The P-39 is no doubt and interesting aircraft that suffers from a bad reputation.
@petesampson4273
@petesampson4273 6 жыл бұрын
I realize that I'm late to the party but I would like to clear some things up. While the first American pilots in P-39s were lacking in experience so were most Russian pilots entering P-39s. The really big difference was that the P-39s at the start of the Pacific war were being used as interceptors of Japanese planes at fairly high altitudes. So, they were operating at a disadvantage in altitude and well above their best fighting altitude. Had the AVG received P-39s instead of P-40s I think Chennault would have had similar success. The 39 and the 40 were both very effective when flown by competent pilots trained to use the strengths of their aircraft. Both were comparable in speed and maneuverability to the Bf-109 at lower altitudes, they were more rugged and carried a heavier load, they had higher diving speeds, and both had excellent rates of roll at high speed unlike the 109, the Zero, or even the Spitfire. While Americans didn't emphasize turning ability the way other countries did they did insist on controls that operated throughout the flight envelope and pilots from both sides cite that as a major advantage. Most American fighters held this advantage over most other fighters. If you can find a copy of "Thunderbolt!" by Robert Johnson; he has a great description of flying mock dogfights against a Spitfire while flying a P-47 both with and without the "paddle blade" prop. The P-38, before the boosted ailerons, was the one American fighter that suffered in rate of roll so it suffered against the German fighters that could match its speed. Cheers!

Never completely believe any American film about WW2. The USN can be thanked for saving Malta by making two deliveries of Spitfires from the USS Wasp Aircrft carrier. The first wave were destroyed on the ground as soon as they landed. With the replacements the RAF had a backup plan , when a Spit landed a fresh pilot took over whilst the aircraft was refueled and gave air cover . It worked perfectly and Malta was never again under threat. The Lockhead P 38 Lightning suffered heavy losses against the ME 109's , in two engagements against the 109's in late 1943 the score was 23-1 for the Germans . The Germans are often praised beyond their actual achievements and considered to be the masters of strategy. Their best ideas sometimes come from the enemy. Good example is Blitzkrieg tactics , attributed to General Heinz Guderian. Truth is that he got the idea from a book written after WW1 by Major General J.F.C.Fuller about the use of armour . Which was the lessons learnt from the battle of Cambrai , France on 20/11/1917 . There is real History and Hollywoods version, and never the twain will meet.

There was no cooperation because of warlordism. A human weakness to the point that it is the bane of all human activity. It started to improve for the British in WW2 when their pre-war generals all got 'promoted' out of harm's way. Marshall was ruthless with Theatre Commanders in the first months after Pearl Harbour. Kimmel's lack of initiative probably set him off. Stalin's purges were just what their military needed too. Believe it or not. New blood, new minds, bugger all political ability. The British Navy never learned that lesson so of course it took them 4 years to turn the corner in the North Atlantic and to get to that they still had to rely on another nation's thinking.

It is amazing from todays prospective why the allies didnt try to copy the Germans examples of combined arms operations as they obviously worked so well. This failure is even more confuseing when you consider that some aspects of German operations were eagerly adopted as quickly as possible. Some, like with Tank tactics, where begining to be adopted even before the war as Generals such as Patton read the writeings of german greats like Guderian and Rommel. But in other areas it seems it was a real struggle even after proven highly successfull. In other areas too its confuseing. The DeHavalind Mosquito bomber carried the same bomb load as the B17, flew more than twice as fast meaning technocally two missions could be flown for every one by B17s, required less critical war materials to build, wood for the airframe and only 2 versus 4 engines meaning easier on logistics as well, risk only 2 crew versus 10 on the B17 and the mosquito proved far more accurate and had the best survival rate of any combat aircraft even though it flew the most hazordous missions regularly. Why america didnt mass produce them by license and use those instead of the B17 is an open question. Three quarters to twice the bomb tonnage could have been dropped with far less american airmen lost. I think it all boils down to being politics. Politics played a huge roll throughout the war from first minute to the last.

BirHakim where the French foreign legion fought to the last man and Tobruk where the Polish army likewise fought bravely to the end. There in fact very few brits on the ground and the same it was in the Air where the South Africans took heavy casualties with old crappy planes from Britain. One must also mention the formidable Africa Corps tactical war fare not at least the famous battle of the Kesselrine pass in Tunisia were the Americans have their baptism of ofre in the Desert war.
