@Documentary Detective III I’ve met captain Campbell a handful of times in Dutch harbor and I can tell you right now he’s probably the nicest captain I’ve ever met. Even tried working on the lady Alaska but sadly he had a full crew. I work on the Brenna J now (boat not on the show) and my captains a hard ass 😂😂 not a bad thing, I know he’s that way because he needs shit to get done but captain Campbell is probably the easiest captain to work for honestly. He’s great! I hope to work for him in the future. He’s probably the nicest captain on the Bering sea and he always gets his crew paid.

Aw, that's sweet. She's clearly in a lot of pain and is genuinely trying. I've been watching this show a long time, and I don't ever remember a captain getting his crew together to rally behind greenhorns so they can make it. If a greenhorn can't cut it, they're told the job isn't for everyone and to get off the boat and that they won't be hired again. This is a refreshing change. I really hope she's doing well.

The only reason they are being nice is because she’s a woman. She is doing a good job but after watching this show enough and how greenhorns were treated it’s obvious she is treated differently. If a male greenhorn cried from crab claw pain they would say he is weak and doesn’t have what it takes.

I was the only female in my college. It was 1990, and I earned my city and guilds in car maintenance. I worked twice as hard, really because I never wanted to be seen as lagging, or a hindrance. I proved to myself that I could do it, and I did it well. I got paid the same too, so that sorts of stomps on the pay gap argument. Women in a male dominated career need to understand that men talk to each other differently, behave differently, and are surprisingly defensive of women once they trust you in their areas. It’s human nature. I decided I wanted to get married and have children. I loved fixing cars, but I lived for being a mother. No regrets.

Lady Alaska knew that if another boat got wind of Ronald's greatness they'd try to steal him for their own operation! "Teamwork makes the dream work." WOW.. What a HUGE difference it makes when the Captain promotes a culture of support and positivity instead of bullying and negativity (like basically every other captain on this show aside from the Hillstrand brothers / Josh Harris).. seeing them rally behind a Greenhorn giving it 110% is so refreshing to watch. I work in Retail Management. The store that I work in is absolutely cut-throat when it comes to management, if you're not producing results you will be demoted or even straight up fired.. I can tell you first-hand how much incredibly easier it is to get things done quickly and properly when your employees genuinely buy in to the team concept. If you're not a strong enough as a leader to keep the morale right and the focus where it needs to be, you will go down in a blaze of glory every single time. Obviously my job isn't nearly as dangerous as crab fishing, but I genuinely believe that the same exact concept applies.

What Gabby lacks in strength, she more than makes up for in sheer willpower. I once worked a job that was very demanding on both your hands and back. (Unloading freshly planted plants into greenhouses. 1 or 2 gallon buckets with 100% water saturated soil, with the minimum standard being 3 1-gallon pots in each hand and 2 2-gallon pots in each.) The job had about a 90% quit rate, as it paid crap and beat you up mentally and physically. While not as hard as crabbing I'm sure, it still sucked horribly for the 'tough' guy's ego that came in only to have myself or a female that were skinny and not as strong, run circles around the bigger, stronger guys and not have any pain while they were shaking out their hands and popping blisters non-stop. If you can survive your first 2-4 weeks of it, you start getting used to it and the pain, blisters, and working in all elements starts to go away, so only the mentally tough made it. It didn't matter how big or strong you were. It mattered how much you hated to lose or quit.

As a commercial roofer who has seen tough women come and not last I gotta be honest maybe 1, tops 2% of women can do this kind of work day in day out. More often than not we end up picking up the slack for them and working much harder than we would otherwise if we had a different worker in their place.
