And a week later I didn’t know they packed it with goze and It was hanging out of my cutt and I thought it was my skin because it was the same color as my blood totally freaked me out because it was like four feet long I just kept pulling It out .

Just for anyone that wants to know, when you’re going out to sea for weeks at a time, we are given basic antibiotics for infections/illnesses like this or colds that turn into bronchitis. We also keep lots of medical supplies like gauze pads, sutures, etc and many times just sew ourselves up. A situation like this we try not to use a lot of supplies and this was not the typical mrsa infection therefore it wouldn’t need to be packed and just covered to allow itself to push out the infection and antibiotics given because the risk of further infection from being in a nasty fishy environment.

Had to do a field surgery like this once. After you drain it, the next part was opening it up wider and pull out all the chunks that makes up the cyst. After that, had to cut up a tampon, (Yes, I carry tampons in my trauma kit) dip it in iodine and put it in the hole. It will absorb any returning puss, allowing it to drain without getting infected. Every 5 hours, we removed the tampon, checked on the area and put a fresh one in. Gave us enough time to get a real doctor to take over.

Yeah, bacteria are always so problematic when trapped under the skin. The problem just grows and grows becoming more painful. It's good practice to always add a sterile scalpel, topical lidocaine (to numb the area), gauze and iodine to your first aid kit. You never know when you'll need to lance something like this. I've had to do a lot of similar self care while in remote places. It sucks but what can a person do. (shrugs) My estimation is that this is irritating Big Bird even more because of its location. He's having to move his arms back and forth for the job which is inflaming the area even more.

@@Quagigitymire Well, I'm not trying to imply anything untoward here. I'm just noting the level of 'CYA'. Consider the situation: A minimally trained person was rendering medical aid in very adverse conditions. If the procedure had gone the least bit wrong, there may have been a lawsuit... A lawsuit of such a nature as to put the Hildebrand Brothers out of business. So the deckhand helping out hit all the high points... - Got the patient's permission to treat - Described in detail what was going to happen and why - Did no more and no less than he described - Did not exceed his level of training - And prescribed appropriate after-care. And he was careful to get this all on camera, just in case the infection was more serious than originally thought. All of this was VERY smart on the part of everybody. It's not as good as a taped affidavit with sworn testimony, but it sure as Hell is the next best thing.

@@davidreynolds8865 Sure. But that's one of the legal protections too. Documentation of treatment protects both the patient and the provider. His interactions with the other captains, his sons, but mostly his personality. He was real. I couldn’t watch it after he was gone. I don’t have any TV service - cable or satellite. I only have streaming. So I watch a lot on KZbin. I started getting video “suggestions” of Deadliest Catch and spin-offs. I’m really becoming a fan of Wild Bill. I cant tell if that was an inflamed ingrown hair, sebaceous cyst, or epidermoid cyst. I've had the latter. Relieving the pressure feels good, but if it was epidermoid then the first aid guy involved did it wrong because after draining the pus you need to probe the incision to find the internal borders of the cyst, then draw out all the dead skin and encapsulating membrane .. which kinda looks like a mixture of damp tissue paper and cottage cheese, and the encapsulating membrane is kinda like a squid cap - the older, the tougher. Bottom line: if its an epidermoid cyst, the crisis is not over, because until the entire cyst is extracted it's going to stay inflamed and will quickly worsen, because cutting the border to drain it spreads the infection. Simply draining a cyst is sometimes NOT enough - you need to assess that type it is when you go in, to determine if additional steps are required.

Suffered with it for weeks until I just had enough. However I wouldn't recommend this approach folks, get yourself to a doctor if you can! @RovingPunster
@RovingPunster 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidleboeuf8799 Yeah, theyre not fun ... esp if they get inflamed/indurated, or worse still, infected. Infected epidermoid cysts can erupt into nasty furuncles, and often leave permanent cellulitis and scarring that can make recurrence more likely. For those who are diabetic, the need to manage sugars takes on increased importance, because elevated blood sugars ramp up the body's inflammation thermostat, and also provide extra food for blood-borne pathogens.

I've done this to myself twice. The first time I had a cyst the size of a golfball in my upper back / lat area. It was just a small bump for like 2 years, then it gradually started to hurt more and more. I honestly thought it was a muscle in my back causing the pain at first, not the bump. So I started putting heating pad on it, which was a huge mistake. It immediately started to get more inflamed and bigger. It grew from the size of a pea to the size of a golfball within like 3 days. It hurt so f'n bad, I can't even begin to explain. I ended up slicing it open with a scalpel and then literally pushing up against the wall mount towel rack on the bathroom wall. I basically squeezed it all out by pushing all of my weight into the metal rack above and below the incision (which was a horrible way to do it, I didn't know how dangerous it was what I did until months afterward when I told someone). Amazingly it healed super fast and very clean. Second time it was the top of my right hand, it was an abscess from a previous injury that didn't heal properly. This one was wayyyy more painful. I probably sat there and squeezed it for 30-40 minutes. The nasty, bloody pus was neverending. Eventually I got to the brain and pulled it out with tweezers. Again, healed super fast and very clean. I got super lucky both times, they could have easily became more infected.

I'm a former homeless teen and learned how to do "normal patch up" stuff. Basically it's alot like Vietnam..you just improvise and keep the person alive. A Combat Medic told me that and it's helped me out numerous times.

Yea staph infections are no fun. Had one last year on the back of my neck under my hair & after 3 days, I started feeling pain in my head. It was a different kind of pain that I’ve never felt before. I couldn’t hold my head up bc if I did the pain would’ve gone to my head & I would be dizzy. My mom wanted me to wait a few days before bringing me to the doctor but I didn’t want any infection to go to my brain so I went to an urgent care w/ my aunt. That’s when I found out it was a staph infection. The doctor gave me an antibiotic cream & pills to take for it bc he said it wasn’t at the point where they needed to drain it out yet. The pills literally knocked my body out of the wind like I didn’t feel like moving around & I was physically exhausted. After the staph went away it took a while for my body to recuperate from the medication & the infection. Staph infections are serious if you don’t take care of it right away whether it’s an ingrown hair or an insect bite

I've done this solo many many times. Although the infection is dangerous. For sure staphylococcus but if your lucky it will stay staphylococcus and not turn into MRSA. I've had MRSA 3 times and ended up in the hospital everytime having to get IV antibiotics for 5days+. Surefire way to end up with a 20k hospital bill.

As soon as he cut it I could feel the relief from that I kinda know how he feels I got my finger smashed really bad one time it swelled up like a huge knot and so purple. The tip of my finger was so big that my nail looked tiny. Usually it would go back to normal because of the hot water from showers but mine was so bad it didn’t. So I took a needle and poked a hole on the top. As soon as I did so much heat came out and blood and puss came out it was such a relief.
