I have heard that some Maltas are very overstable but as always I can only test the ones I have. Both of the discs shown in this video were scaled at 173 which is only a few grams short of max weight for the mold. I wonder if perhaps some runs came out flatter and those runs are more overstable but that is just a guess. Please leave a comment if you have experience with this disc and let me know.

Disc Golf Nerd mine is more overstable. I got a 175 firsts run and just tested my new prototype in a 167 the other day that I compared it with and the prototype is similar just has more glide. The first run reminds me of a fast zone honestly. More overstable and will turn.

I’ve grown to really love the Malta. The first year or so it was in my bag, I barely threw it. However, as you stated in the video, I have been working on my anhyzer shots and flexing overstable discs and this is perfect for that. I like the Malta because it’s not crazy beefy so it will still get some glide but it will also reliably come out of anhyzers, granted you have your power and angles dialed in. I think it’s a great compliment to the Buzzz.

I use my Malta exclusively for sidearms, it has pretty close to same feel as roc3, but I just have more comfortable grip on the malta with sidearm. Roc3 for backhand throws. Great review!

You’re the man Disc Golf Nerd! Thanks for your ongoing service to the community. I have some experience with the malta and I’ve found that the first runs were remarkably less overstable than the prototypes. I had a few protos that were considerably overstable some could say could warrant the positive turn rating but I agree some could say it doesn’t make sense to have anything other than a zero if the disc doesn’t turn. Ill say the first runs were definitely a lot straighter to where if you put some off axis torque on her or if there’s wind or something the disc could potentially flip up and ride a lot straighter instead of pretty much always dumping like a firebird, so that 1 turn rating could confuse people on the first runs. Some apparently were saying the protos were just too overstable so they made the first run less stable, which I don’t entirely agree with I thought the prototypes were just fine, if you’re looking for an overstable disc Idk know why they’d make it a little straighter. All in all though I love this disc and in different weights and stabilities I think it could be pretty versatile. But out of the box it is great for something you want to go left or resist some torque. I find this disc is a lot more comfortable in my hand than something like a roc, so I like to bag one in conjunction with some other useful mids. I’ve found the first run really shows it’s stability on a hyzer release , whereas some other discs almost always hyzer out regardless of angle.

Once you stop using a malta as a midrange and use it as a trouble spot disc, you'll fall in love with it. You need to use the turn and fade like an approach disc. You can bend this disc around trees so easily, it can save a ton of strokes on shots that would normally cost you. For example. I had an obstructed basket on a hill. I was maybe 4 feet left of the fairway below the hill by maybe 50 feet from the pin. A normal shot would be a tomahawk and hope for the best. I used the malta with a steep hyzer to bend around the obstruction and parked it. Seriously reccomend this type of shot.

Big Z plastic is the beefy one, the ESP always comes in less stable. I usually carry both types on my favorite molds, gives a nice subtle difference.

I have the same dilemma with my Quake and my Anchor. They both have the flight I'm looking for in that slot, but I have a little more confidence in the Quake. The Anchor has the DGN logo, and I want to represent whenever possible. Decisions, Decisions. Usually carry both...

Yah it's a tough call because I genuinely really like both in flight and in feel. Probably gonna stick with my Anchor for now but I'm gonna hold onto a Quake too.

I think where this disc shines is in its small diameter feel and comfort in the hand , i’m sure there’s plenty of other discs that can replace it, but for me it’s most comfortable in my hand and gives me confidence. And I think it’s definitely warrantable to give it a speed 5, because of its small diameter I think it definitely comes out of the hand faster than something like a four speed zone, but because of the stability obviously it won’t go as far as like a less stable roc3 or something.

I will say this disc is interesting in its characteristics in that under the right circumstance it can act much more overstable than other conditions. I’ve found on a nice flat backhand rip even with some power it can go right into a hyzer fade, but on a forehand which is less controlled with more torque the disc can wobble or turn and act less ‘stable’, but I think the stability of the disc is sometimes confused with torque resistance. My buddy threw my malta when it first came out and he first threw it on a forehand, it wobbled and kinda flipped up and he said the same thing ‘there’s no way this is a 1 turn rating!’. But I don’t exactly know how to parse this, because it had acted quite overstable in my testing, but when given a poorly angled rip or some inconsistent torque it can act more squirrelly, idk if this says that this disc isn’t as ‘overstable’ as a different meathook midrange , but it’s interesting to note.

Thank you for the reviews. Any chance you could write in the aproximate distance on your throwing section of the review. I feel it would give some gage to the power your throwing them at, I don't really care how far you can potentially throw the disc, just the power put behind it since that seems to make a huge difference in flight. Hopefully that makes sense, maybe I am way off base? keep up the good work and charge on to 10000.

The Proto run was excessively over-stable and board flat. When the first run came out Paul said they tweaked it due to lots of people not being able to throw it. I'm guessing they didn't wanna change the flight numbers listed from the proto to the first run.
@DiscGolfNerd
@DiscGolfNerd 4 жыл бұрын
That's kinda what I figured might be the case but especially if they deliberately tweaked the flight they definitely should have adjusted the numbers to represent that.

@@willhowarddg Yes and since Discraft is new to the numbers game they have changed disc numbers on discs to represent the disc better. That seems like it might happen with the Malta.

The Swirl ESP sounds like the plastic made before Ace Race 2007. That was the stuff that now new Titanium has a similar vibe to but more OS somehow and stays slick style. Yes the Malta with just the PM logo the test flight is the very OS version from what others say, even Paul McBeth is not a fan of that disc. The mold in general is a wider rim ROC/3 disc similar to the Wasp but with more ROC shape to the wing. Since Discraft probably refused to make the Wasp in plastic other then Z, Paul had to make a new mold that was like the ROC.

If you want to find very overstable Maltas go with a proto and the weight goes up to 180 because I have a white and blue one that is 180 and its a meathook and i know the lightweight ones can be hyzer flipped which is understandable when it's not max weight

My friends and I all picked up maltas and none of them were over stable. the flight numbers are more like 5,4,1 with a fade of 2 at best. Over all I am really disappointed with them and the Hades with how inconsistent the discs are. Some are overstable some flippy.
@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 4 жыл бұрын
You are not wrong with 180 gram max diameter discs. The 180 gram max diameter discs end to with Z Wasp as an exception or a weight 177+ gram ROC/3 have glide to the midrange as do some short fairway in midrange style and fly with more glide then the others. I mean, just look at the Spider, the Cayman, the Gator, and everyone of them is lower glide, the exceptions are molds with dome to them or are technically a fast putter.

This is just a wasp 2.0 imo. Where PMcb used to throw a beaded mid at Innova he and discraft decided to make a new mold and slap his name on it with any questions. Want a beaded os mid? You're in luck because their is tons on the market and most will be better without the PMcb tax.
